|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
We aim to make your stay a memorable one with comfortable beds, a spacious ocean-view home, and many amenities. Easy parking too!
Our two-bedroom home was built in 1936, and has hardwood floors, crown molding, formal living and dining rooms, gourmet kitchen, and romantic wood burning fireplace. It is quite large: 1500 square feet. In the center of the house there is a glass-ceiling atrium, filled with palms, anthuriums, orchids, and other tropical plants. There are spacious views of the Pacific Ocean and Marin Headlands from each bedroom, with gorgeous sunset views (when it isn't foggy, of course!). We love bed and breakfasts, and have included some of the amenities found there, including thick fluffy towels, high quality soaps and shampoo, a 52-inch plasma TV (for Netflix, HuluPlus and DVDs only--no regular television), and free coffee and teas. In the event you arrive late and can't shop, we provide milk and cereal to get you going in the morning.
Our comfy queen-size beds have thick mattress pads and comforters, and 500-count cotton sheets. Although ours is officially the safest neighborhood in San Francisco, we provide a small safe which you may use to store your (small) computer and other valuables. There is an inflatable bed which we will provide for a fee, in case you wish to stash a child or two on the living room floor to sleep.
Our home is furnished in a comfortable, eclectic style, with items collected over the years from travel, auctions, and gifts from friends and families. If you happen to be a PG Wodehouse fan, you are in luck; we have a great collection of his books, as well as many other authors you may enjoy.
Every neighborhood in San Francisco has something to recommend it. We love our neighborhood, the Inner Sunset, for its great shops and restaurants, quiet wide streets, and lovely parks. Garrison Keillor, host of 'A Prairie Home Companion' on NPR, recently listed the Inner Sunset as one of the four top places to visit in San Francisco, along with Golden Gate Park (4 1/2 blocks from our home), Muir Woods and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Our area is safe and quiet, with low housing density and easy parking. There is good access to other neighborhoods via the N Judah trolley line, 2½ blocks from our house. We are about 12 blocks from the renowned UCSF Medical Center, for those who will be visiting family there.
This part of the City has many large parks nearby, which offer beautiful, secluded walks, large trees, many great music events, museums, and much more. After a long day of work--or sightseeing-- it's great to walk on the beach (ten minute drive from house), then go to one of the numerous inexpensive restaurants within a short walk or drive of our home. On one of those cold, foggy nights, just hunker down at home, light the fireplace or watch a movie and order takeout.
We want you to have a great stay in the city we are proud to call home. We live in a separate downstairs unit, and are always willing to help with maps, suggestions on places to eat, and things to do. Bon voyage!
Me and my family had an amazing time in San Francisco. John is an excellent host, making us feel comfortable like is our own home. The house had everything you need, and the neighbourhood is also really friendly and well located.
Our experience renting and staying in this wonderful property immensely surpassed our expectations, from the time I made the reservation to our departure. The listing description is very accurate and additional information was provided to us via email when my reservation was confirmed. The property is clean and well maintained. We were fortunate to meet John during our departure so we were able to tell him in person about how much we enjoyed his home.
The wine cabinet was well stocked and appreciated! The kitchen was well used and well stocked with coffees, teas, and spices. We ate breakfast in the atrium each morning and used this little room to house our shoes as well! The plants and flowers and light in the atrium made us feel we were in a tropical climate.
What a great view of the Sunset and ocean in the distance. We enjoyed the quaintness of this home and its wonderful energy, no doubt a reflection of the owners and their attention to details. We will return for future visits and further episodes of Penguin Theater!
Fantastic place to stay with great location and views. Owners went out of there way to make our stay the best it could be. We did not rent a car and used public transportation with no problem. Lots of information provided about what to do in the city, how to use public transportation, restaurants etc. House very well appointed with touches of owners sense of humor here and there! Loved it. Beautiful tiled stairway just a block away leading up to a 360 degree view of San Francisco. Thank you, John and Shelley
Our retreat for 6 nights. It far exceeded my expectations.
John and Shelley’s pre-arrival notes were more than extensive and gave me a very good overview of what we were to expect.
There was more than enough space for us to spread out. In fact we didn’t really use the front lounge.
It was pleasing to see how John and Shelly have kept the house as original as possible. Finished in 1939 the same year as the Golden Gate International Exposition.
Having a full kitchen with the usual everyday condiments on hand was really useful plus the breakfast supply and chilled wine awaiting us in the fridge.
Being relatively close to the N Line meant a speedy trip 30 minute into town. Coming back here late at night we were away from hustle and bustle of San Francisco in this very quiet safe neighbourhood. Catching the bus, including the Express, were other options that took us through other parts of the city.
Thanks for the unexpected offer to meet me by the N Line stop on my arrival John. The walk wheeling my bag to your place was fine.
Plus as you had no guests for the next night, thanks so much for the very late check out which enabled me to store my bag and travel to my next destination feeling really refresh.
Photos of what attractions that can be easily done from here can be found in my Travelpod blog - user name "bruceontour".
The PS … To anyone staying here, do make the effort to climb the tiled stairs and then up to the view point at the top. It is just around the corner. It took us till nearly the last day to take time out for the 30 minutes that is needed.
This is our second stay, & just as wonderful as the first. The owners were quick to respond to us, & very patient with me as I asked all sorts of questions, trying to make sure this was just the right place for us. Paying for it was easy & secure. Easy to find & access the property with the detailed instructions given. Parking on the adjacent street, just 4 houses down is easy & free. The neighborhood is very nice and quiet, and we felt very safe, even walking at night. When we entered we were amazed at how light and sunny the home is. It has retained it's wonderful "old San Francisco charm", and yet is modern and comfortable. The pictures are very accurate, yet it is lighter and more inviting than the pictures portray. It's a very peaceful place to relax and unwind.
Both the beds were very comfortable. Sitting in bed you can see out the window to Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach. We watched the sunsets, and were often drawn to the windows just to look, the view is so beautiful. The kitchen is well stocked. We cooked and ate in most of the time, and it was easy. Oh - and we loved the jar of peanut M & M's always on the counter!
The wi-fi worked great. There is a phone for local calls, that came in handy. The only TV is in the master bedroom. (This is the 2nd different apartment we have stayed in SF & the other was the same way). There is no regular TV service, but Netflix and another I have forgotten the name of are available. The bathroom has a bath tub and a separate shower, and the toilet has a door separating it from the rest of the bathroom, so it works well with multiple people.
There are a lot of doors in this home, and it makes it easy to close off sections for privacy or quiet. I slept in the living room on the airbed the first time, and on a fold out sleeping mat this time, and both are comfortable. Although the sleeping mat would be much more comfy for kids. But I was able to close the doors, leaving everyone else able to use the kitchen and bathroom without disturbing me. And then there's the warm, sunny little atrium, right in the center of the house - wonderful!! We had breakfast here each morning, even in November last year, when it was foggy out, it was sunny and warm in there! There are so many thoughtful little things in this home! We discovered more on our second stay. There are labels everywhere, helping you figure out how to work things. Some of them are pretty funny, so keep your eye out. We loved this home and will return!
This beautiful home away from home was so nice to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. My daughter and I loved the comfy beds and thick towels. There is so much to do and using MUNI was easy. There are great restaurants all over SF. Having a car for Sonoma, Napa, and Muir Woods was great. It is easy to get over the bridge and back. Easy parking on street near apartment. John and Shelley are great hosts. They have lots of tour books, etc. about the SF area. The tile stairs near apartment are a must. Thanks again for our first time to SF and your hospitality!
Golden Gate Park 5 blocks away has the following: Arboretum--California Academy of Sciences--DeYoung Museum of Art--Japanese Tea Garden--Lawn Bowling--Archery--PGA Golf Course--Conservatory of Flowers (beautiful Victorian glass building)--gorgeous old Victorian Carousel--and much more. Even live buffalo!, Lots and lots of restaurants and shopping within a ten-minute walk--including charming Ninth Avenue shopping, Plus the myriad other attractions in and around San Francisco.
