Overview

Lake Hickory House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-8)

Lake Fontana is located in the far reaches of Western North Carolina in the majestic beautiful Great Smoky Mountains of the southern Appalachians.

This region is home to some of the highest and most remote mountains east of the Mississippi with elevations ranging from 1177 to 5560 feet. Fontana is nestled among hundreds of thousand of acres of wilderness full of stunning mountain landscapes and many memorable breathtaking views.

Our floating lakehouse has a breathtaking view of the lake and mountains. The sunset is AWESOME!

The house has 16 ft cathedral ceilings that are black walnut tongue and groove paneling. The loft is done in wormy red oak paneling. The bedrooms are done in all cypress tounge and grove paneling. The fully equipped kitchen is all hickory cabinets. A beautiful home for the perfect vacation.

We offer shuttle service to and from Cable Cove Wildlife Landing to the floating lakehouse. Upon arrival a 28 ft pontoon boat with hard top sundeck is available to use your entire vacation.

For those who love to fish, all tackle and fishing rods are available with guide. Our dear friend Bobby Milsaps is available upon request to guide you for the best fishing spots on Lake Fontana. Bobby was born and raised in Fontana and has guided for over 50 years of his life.

Lake Fontana is a wonderful place for the adventurer, sportsman, outdoors man or just to get away and relax. Experience of a lifetime!!! Gather up all your fishing buddies or family and get ready for lots of fun.

Two kayaks are available for the family to enjoy. Great hiking trails and much more.

Boater's Paradise

Boater's Paradise
  • 5 of 5
My family and I spent a week in June at this truly unique vacation house on one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen. We brought a boat last year and were looking for a place to take it on vacation where we wouldn't have to haul it or our gear around all the time. There was nothing more convenient than docking it 15 feet from the sliding door of this house!

The house is very well built using quality materials. As an engineer I truly appreciated all the work that was put into building a house that floats on the water. Make no mistake, this is a floating "house" not a cabin just to bunk in. The queen sized beds were comfortable and we found that there was everything we needed for the week.

The location and views from the house are unbelievable! I honestly think that they have the best location on the entire lake. The pictures of the view do not do it justice and what it doesn't capture is just how quiet the area is. The house is in a creek just off of the main channel where the lake opens up to miles of undeveloped lake. On the weekend, there were maybe 2 or 3 other boaters out and during the week there was only 1 other family in the creek, so we felt like we had the area to ourselves. The lake itself is clean, deep, deserted and usually pretty flat (think of a mirror). Even though it is up in the mountains, the water was warm and perfect for water sports. If you are new to boating or renting their boat, this is an easy lake to navigate.

We went out fishing with Bobby a couple of times and had some good luck! He was an excellent guide and handled my young boys (6 and 8) wonderfully. What is truly an amazing accomplishment was he got my wife into position to catch her first "solo" fish while they were jumping.

Steve and Marcella were excellent hosts. They have set up this house with everything you need and were a pleasure to work with. Steve made it a point to offer up anything in the house and made us feel at home. You can tell he's proud of the house and rightfully so.

This was a great family vacation for us and when the week was over nobody wanted to go home. We could have easily stayed another week and normally my wife won't say that. Our kids loved the house and playing in the water at every opportunity. While they had DirecTV in the house our kids spent more time away from all that. I would highly recommend this rental. I'm sure we'll be back, probably next year.

Most relaxing vacation yet

  • 5 of 5
This was definitely an adventure. Our family of four (two ten year old girls) spent a week enjoying the serenity of being surrounded by the Smoky Mountains (in front of you) and the Nantahala National Forest behind us. Steve gave us a brief intro on how to use the technology in the house (it took maybe 30 minutes, and you do need to pay attention). After that, we were truly off the grid.

The water was amazing. It was easy to see 10-15 down into the lake and fun to watch our daughters neon suits almost glow. Most of our days were spent tubing behind the pontoon boat (not fast, but fun) and casting a line in the water. We boated to different locations around the park and spent time hiking in the Park, rarely seeing other boaters. We hit the rope swing down the river on a daily basis and enjoyed flinging ourselves out into the water. We caught numerous fish from the dock and ate them right away. We didn't get to fish out on the lake with Bobby, but we enjoyed his visits and his fishing advice from the house. And, the light pole he helped us erect for night fishing was a huge pastime. The TV was available, but rarely on.

Like others, we ate every meal at the house -- which was a treat for us. Do NOT rely on the marinas for food or groceries. You do need to plan ahead with your supplies, but the kitchen was well-stocked. We loved eating dinner on the decking next to the house and watching the hummingbirds and scouting for bald eagles. It helped us that we had someone join us mid-week who brought additional food so we didn't have to leave the house for groceries.

We rarely ran the electricity during the day and found the breeze to be pleasant enough to not need the AC provided, or the heat (we were starting to get chilly one night, which was a blessing). The bedding and towels provided were good quality and there were plenty of them. You are showering in lake water but it was clean and Steve provided plenty of drinking water and replenished extra ice throughout the week. The cell phone connection, as indicated, worked best in the lake but also worked at certain sweet spots on the deck and at night.

We are strong swimmers. I wouldn't recommend this house for anyone who isn't very comfortable on the water. The house was stable and you barely felt it rocking in the gentle waves (which were mostly from the very few boats that went by). You do need to plan ahead to bring what you need and appreciate what you have. It was a true respite from reality.

VACATION NIGHTMARE

  • 1 of 5
BREATHTAKING mountain-view! Well-equipped home! Gracious hosts that is until there is a PROBLEM. First red flag was when they ONLY accepted cash & refused to give receipt. Second red flag was no contract required before or during our stay. Owners advised they lived 3 hours away & if we had any problems their friend (fishing guide) was staying across the lake & he would be by regularly to check on our well-being. Saturday was GREAT! Sunday we woke up to no running water. We advised their representative immediately who told us he was contacting owners but that they were aware of the faulty "pump issues" & had been trying to locate another pump. Because of reception, we finally were able to contact owners on Wednesday who said he finally located one & would be coming out Thursday to replace it. We went 4 days with no running water. We were grateful to their representative for bringing us fresh drinking water & ice! We tried to talk to owners about compensation & they said they couldn't prevent the faulty pump & that pumps do break. PLEASE BE WARNED: Any/All running water in the house comes directly from a two foot pipe extending into the lake. Your usable fresh water is given to you in unsealed 5 gallon jugs. I inquired about where the water in the jugs comes from and was advised it was out of a well from their other home. For 9 days we boiled water to wash/rinse dishes & to bathe. Four of those days we had to dip buckets into the lake because of no running water in the home. We had to dip water out of the lake to flush the toilet. We LOVED the ducks visiting, but they left feces around the home & we were terrified of getting ill if we used the water without boiling it first. We expressed our concerns to the owners. The day we were to leave, they handed me a contract & asked me to sign only after we complained of our circumstances. They refused to return deposit unless we signed contract. After 3 weeks & no complaints from them, part of my deposit was returned. The other was kept for a cleaning fee and damage we supposedly did to their dock. We vehemently deny these allegations! We abided by the rules & made sure home was clean when we left. And, there is no cleaning fee mentioned in the advertisement. As I indicated earlier, they are gracious hosts UNTIL there is a PROBLEM. We paid a lot of money to live as we did during the hurricanes in Florida in 2004. I have contacted North Carolina Department of Health, IRS, and Better Business Bureau.

Owner's Response: As owners of a home that is even considered a vacation rental we go beyond measure to assure those that visit our site have a safe and pleasant experience. Our site is most unique in the fact that it floats and is stabilized at an area in the lake where the depth of water is approximately 135 feet. This is not a home connected to city amenities yet it has all the comforts of home. These comforts certainly have their individual characteristics consistent with a "self contained" unit.

Great care is taken to have provisions in place for situations if and when they could arrive. Each time a guest arrives, this time was certainly no different, they are provided with the name and number of a local representative who if not immediately available certainly will be shortly. This representative also does routine visits to answer questions or attend to any need if they were to arise. The phone numbers for both my wife and I are given to each group. On this occasion I programmed the contact numbers into their phone before leaving the home site. In other words all effort is given to provide availability for service if the need arises.

On Sunday our representative did come by on his routine check on the guests. Yes, he was asked to check the water. He did and found it to be reacting typically with the delay that is part of the workings of the pump type, siphoning action, and the fact that unlike in a typical household the pressure is not constantly on the lines but is built on demand. He did his explanation and left with everyone seemingly happy. Wednesday evening we received two calls stating there was a possible problem. One call was from the guest and the other from our representative where they had confronted him on his visit. He at that time made full provisions for their need of ice and water to last the balance of their day and well into the next which would be Thursday. Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. I was waiting for the pump supplier to open. I purchased an new pump, made the journey to the site, and installed the new pump even though I found nothing wrong with the function of the one already in place. I remained in the area for the rest of their stay just in case there was a further issue.

One last comment , fact and observation about the matter. Our other reviews speak for themselves. Of all that have visited our most unique home this is the first time we have gone to our site to find it damaged and trashed by the guest.

Natures Best!

  • 5 of 5
We had a fabulous time relaxing and enjoying the house and lake. It is hard to believe such a great place exists. Beautiful views of the mountains, swimming, kayaking, floating, boating, fishing (many thanks to Bobby!!), feeding the ducks and fish - hard to believe all that in one place. It was a great get away from everything but simplicity and nature at its finest. Thanks Steve and Marcie for making our vacation possible, it was like no other.

Quality Family Time

  • 5 of 5
Our son located this fantastic floating home to spend time together. The home is just as the photos suggest...very clean and high quality. It's also very private-only one other home (similar in quality) in the protected "bay". The owners have thought of everything including fun, comfy floats for enjoying the crystal clear water and a reserve pontoon boat just in case the first one has problems-which didn't happen!
It's rare to find a spot that is secluded amidst such beauty. The quiet nights with the windows open and no bugs were treasured. (There are fans and AC if needed.) The fishing guide, Bobby, was so kind and entertaining. We did catch and eat fish!
We also took the pontoon boat to Fontana Dam and spent time at the Visitors' Center which is very worthwhile.
All four of us are dreaming of returning next year.

True Paradise

  • 5 of 5
This trip was one of the most tranquil and relaxing vacations we have ever enjoyed. I was able to get some amazingly beautiful pictures of the lake and Smokey mountains right from the front door of this wonderful floating house. Steve & Marcella were wonderful to work with and made us feel so welcomed and right at home, and we needed nothing one we arrived. My husband enjoyed the time he spent with Bobby, (their fishing guide), although the fish just were not biting that evening. Steve and Bobby had so much history of the lake area to share, still keep thinking about being there and want to come back in the near future.
