About Doug and Linda Gallagher

Always loved the experience to go by the lakeside to visit relatives and the adults would gather to play card games with children or swim while the children would kayak -swim - and play games. It was fun having a place to be with your family that we would only see once or twice a year. We enjoyed hiking ,sledding, skating, and skiing together. Great way to enjoy outdoor activity and share meals and favorite recipes together.

Why Doug and Linda Gallagher chose Waterford

Great location - offers natural setting in the great outdoors and near two Cities -N.Conway - Portland 30 and 40 min away .The Cottage is cozy to hangout in ( rest) and get away from it all. It offers a warm cozy fireplace to sit by and read or watch a movie. Beautiful views all year round -very colorful in the fall-beautiful winter postcard views after a fresh snowfall-the sunsets in the summer and full moons at night are spectacular. The sounds of the loons on the lake are a great way to relax on the dock after a long day.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy the views -being able to hike right outside the Cottage and travel only a couple of miles to enjoy quaint towns with outdoor theater -apple picking - blueberry picking-strawberry picking-the sounds of nature all around you - very private- swimming in clean fresh water-enjoying kayaking-fishing-hiking-biking-ice fishing-sledding-skiing 15 min away (Shawnee 25min Bethel Sunday River)-shopping in quaint local stores-restaurants-ice fishing -skating-cross country skiing-snow shoeing-sledding-snowmobiling(ITS right from Lakeside)

What a great week!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you Linda and Doug for letting us stay in your beautiful house. Our family and friends (and our dog) had such a great time spending our week at your house. We loved being out on the water on the kayak, surf board with a seat, and the canoe. It was perfect that the hiking trail was right outside the door and when you got to the top the view was great.
Quick ride to towns for shopping, dining, bars, ECT. was a plus and it was great you could return to the quiet hideaway.
The only cons: busy street out front, didn't bother us but I could see it being an issue for a some renters. Early morning bugs on the water that seemed to go away as the sun came out.

Thank you again!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5
Great cottage! Good location! Wonderful views! The listing is accurate, with the exception of linens and towels provided - they are NOT. This was a bit of a negative for us as we were traveling a long way in a very small car. Having a bed already made would've been a treat. However, Linda and Doug warned us in advance and we were prepared with linens. The property was reasonably clean and well-maintained. It is not a luxury condo - it is a cottage- which is exactly what we wanted. The negative review is unfair. Yes, there is traffic on the road - but you are right on the water and the sound of the cars is drowned out by loons and trees swaying in the breeze! And all of the many windows face the pond, not the road. The 3 tiered deck is wonderful. Yes, a bit tricky on the last tier, but we are in our 60's and managed just fine. The location is very nice with small towns within easy driving distance with fine restaurants. The hike up Bear Mountain is challenging, but doable and worth the reward of a beautiful view from the top! Bear Pond is more of a lake than a pond and is lovely to kayak, canoe, and swim in daily. It is very clean and refreshing. The bathroom is nice, excellent shower, no problems with hot water at all. The master bedroom is delightful, with gorgeous views of Bear Pond from everywhere in the room, including the bed. The other bedrooms looked good also, but it was just the 2 of us, so they did not get used. The kitchen is equipped with everything we needed to make our breakfasts and lunches. We chose to go out for dinners. Listening to the loons in the evening and early morning was one of the highlights for us. If you are looking for a nice cozy, somewhat eclectic and rustic waterfront cottage with beautiful views and excellent water access, this is a perfect choice. We were very happy that we DID NOT listen to the one BAD review. We would DEFINITELY return here and recommend this listing to our friends and family.

Cottage on a beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5
Location is priceless. We kayaked and swam from morning until evening. There is even a public swing rope 2 mins walking distance from the cottage, where we jumped into the lake. The kids did not want to go anywhere, but stay on the lake. The house is comfortable and very clean. Great time was had by all. We appreciated all the movies stored throughout the house. It was really fun showing kids movies that we enjoyed before. The only downer is cell phone service. Found a good spot by the kitchen table in the corner window. Could also be a good thing for the family to stay off electronics.

Bear Heaven

  • 4 of 5
My stay at Bearhaven was very enjoyable. My group of 6 stayed for 2 nights and found the accommodations more than adequate. There are plenty of boats for everyone to be on the water. I thought the 3 level deck was very enjoyable even if the bottom set of stairs is a bit steep. The beds are very comfortable, but do bring your own sheets (queen, doubles, and twins) Linda is very quick at responding to e-mails and Doug was the one who greeted my group. He was very pleasant and helpful with letting us know where everything is and what we might have to do in certain situations like power outages and rain storms. I gave a 4 out of 5 because it would be nice to have sheets provided on a fully made bed, and some cleaning and disposal supplies. And I almost forgot, when we went in the lake it was so warm that it felt like bath water.

Beautiful relaxing place right by lake.

  • 4 of 5
Beautiful place right by the lake. The sunset vies are amazing, we enjoyed kayaking or just relaxing outside by the lake. The only problem, We didn't have enough time to sleep. But, we cached up when we got home. The house was clean overall. I'll recommend this place if you love outdoor activities, like hiking, kayaking or taking a swim in crystal clear Maine water. It's better than the cleanest pool.

Don't stay here.

We were very disappointed in what we found. The cottage is 40 feet from a main road and it was dangerous to get out of the driveway. To get to the water you had to climb down a ladder and it was dangerous. We ran out of hot water in the shower after five minutes and had to wait for it to come back on again. Some of the rooms had white paint on the walls as if they never finished painting them. The pictures on there website were very deceiving. No phone or WIFI either so we had to drive to McDonalds to e-mail them and wait for them to e-mail back. There was no phone reception to call them. We never even met them when we were there. We left three days earlier and got another hotel. No DVD player either and the TV only had one channel. Their was dirt and cob webs on some of the window sills. We didn't cook in the kitchen because the handle of the stove was grimy. They did have a phone but it didn't work. There was no beach area so the canoe and kayaks were up on the lawn and they were to heavy to put in the water for us. A whole vacation down the tubes. We e-mailed them and got no satisfaction. None of the issues we presented to them were addressed except for she did say it might not be safe for dogs. They wanted us to go to a garage and get the kayaks. Although I e-mailed them that they put on their website that kayaks were included. I did e-mail them also that if we knew the cottage was that close to the road we would have never rented it. I called the Health Dept of Waterford and told them about the water and traffic. They told me it was a noisy and traveled road. Which we knew already. There were a lot of big rigs driving by. Very deceiving.

Owner's Response: The Bear Haven Cottage is as close to the waters edge without being in the Lake and the convenient Road access to allow people to find the Cottage easily and to go enjoy and explore the area. We hope all our renters will enjoy the cozy feel of our Lakeside Cottage in the Mountains of Maine as we always do when we have the opportunity to stay at the Cottage that we just recently started advertizing to rent on Memorial Day weekend this year. We rented every week so far in July and August and almost all of September and October. The Cottage will rent year round Through ski season. The Cottage does have TV's and VHS players and a selection of VHS videos for all ages. We rarely have time for TV with all the hiking - canoe -kayaking -blueberry picking - strawberry picking- biking-swimming-we are about 30 minutes from Conway,NH and 40 minutes from Portland,ME. about 15 minutes from Fryeburg and Bethel , ME.
All our Renters have asked the same questions about Kayak use and we suggested renting them to be easier and with much request to the expense and having to carry them to the car and then to the Cottage we realized how important it would be to allow renters the use of our canoe and kayak. Our Cottage does have a small expansion tank and will run out and start up when the demand for water occurs. We have asked to be conservative for your convenience and offered /suggested how to remedy the situation so you would not be without water ever.. People asked about WiFi and were able to make a trip to the three local Library's for free use of WiFi (closest 2 miles away and furthest is Bridgeton 10 min). and a couple of renters were able to sit on our dock to use their phones and enjoy the view of the Lake. As for the Road being busy- it's busy mostly on weekends with people returning home or coming to stay in the mountain's for their stay for their week. We mention this to every renter and yes we had only one other renter- who committed on the roads business when they arrived and then mentioned how nice it calmed down soon after. Noises will echo off the Mountain too. And the speed limit is suppose to be 35 mph- of course a few travelers-motorcycles especially love to travel the scenic root and don't see the speed limit is 35 mph. We appreciate that the road is not busy all day and we enjoy Mountain and Lakes natural noises as most of our renters had mentioned in their reviews. It truly is different than the ocean in which has its own beauty and experi
