Annapolis Royal Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 2-5.

An Artist's House is a spacious, coastal historic Nova Scotia home situated on 60 acres in a quiet rural setting. Located just a seven-minute drive from beautiful Annapolis Royal, the house looks on to a wide expanse of protected, former French Acadian marshlands and the Annapolis River-Basin. Experience breathtaking vistas of the waterfront and forested landscape while strolling along our private trail to the shore. Breathe in the fragrance of pine and salt air while relaxing under wide-open skies on the roomy deck. The picture-book house, built in 1822 by a shipwright, retains many of its historic features. Its spacious rooms and many windows give the home a light and airy ambience. Lovingly cared for and tastefully decorated with an eclectic mix of new and antique furniture and local artwork, it includes a well-supplied kitchen for home-cooked meals, 3 comfortable sitting areas and cozy, sun-dappled bedrooms with deluxe bedding. With its welcoming, pastoral charm and serene coastal surroundings, the property is the perfect place for small families, couples, artists, birders or those looking to unwind and replenish in a beautiful natural setting. Full of character, history and calm, this enchanting property feels like it's worlds away.

Please note: We cannot accommodate wedding parties or events.

Birding Paradise: An Artist's House looks on to mixed woodlands, open fields, coastal salt marshes and the tidal Annapolis River-Basin offering some of the best birding sites in the region. Whether you observe from the deck or wander the path to the shoreline you will not be disappointed. A magnificent trail along the Bay of Fundy at Delaps Cove is a short drive away. Nearby birding locations include the French Basin Marsh Trail in Annapolis Royal and Mickey Hill Pocket Wilderness. Other excellent birding sites are found at Digby Neck and Brier Island and Kejimkujik National Park. For your use, we keep copies of field guides to the region including the excellent “Birds of Atlantic Canada.”

Couples Nest: An Artist's House is a wonderful place for couples to celebrate an anniversary or simply get away. Wake up to beautiful surroundings. Enjoy your morning coffee or tea while relaxing in the cheery sun room. Stroll down the wildflower –lined path to view the beautiful, historic marshlands and Annapolis River Basin. In the evenings, prepare your favorite meals from the well-supplied kitchen. Enjoy a glass of wine while lounging on comfortable chairs on the deck. Watch contemporary or foreign films from a wide selection of DVD’s or read a book from our library of fiction, nonfiction and Nova Scotia-themed authors. You may never want to leave the property!

Great for small families: The property surrounding the house offers plenty of places to explore including a private picnic area and a trail through the property that leads to the shore. It's a wonderful outdoor classroom. You’ll also discover vastly different landscapes in the two regions of the Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley that will definitely influence and enhance your experiences of the great outdoors. From stunning coastal areas to the quiet woods, freshwater lakes and beautiful inland areas, you can choose from a number of locations to enjoy your favorite activity whether it’s hiking, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, golfing or whale watching. The house is also just a short drive to Upper Clements Family Theme Park and Raven Haven Family Beach Park.

Artist’s Haven: With its rolling, pastoral beauty, changing light and dynamic waterways, the Bay of Fundy/Annapolis Royal area is clearly an artist’s or photographer’s landscape. From the dramatic hills surrounding Fort Anne National Historic Site to the charming waterfronts of Annapolis Royal and Granville Ferry, you will not have to look hard for inspiration. As one reviewer stated: “The town and the area are like walking into a classic 19th painting.” Visit any number of artist’s studios and the wonderful ArtsPlace, the community’s art gallery, to view local and national art. Settle into an armchair to enjoy the many art books from the gallery’s library.

About Andi Rierden

My husband and I live on the eastern end of a beautiful expanse of historic marshlands along the tidal Annapolis River. An Artist's House is set on the western end. Taking care of the house and our guests and sharing with them our beautiful area is my passion. The serenity of the house and surrounding landscape with Annapolis Royal close by makes it an ideal setting. If you are considering a Nova Scotia vacation, I'm certain you would enjoy a stay at An Artist's House.

Andi Rierden purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Andi Rierden chose Annapolis Royal

I fell in love the first time I saw it. This is a beautiful, classic Nova Scotian shipwright's house with many windows, an open design and stunning views. The decor is cheerful and bright with lots of interesting artwork. The property reminds me of my childhood summers - simple and carefree with a beautiful landscape to explore, pristine vistas and boundless skies. The house rests on a knoll overlooking several hundred acres of conservation lands along the Annapolis River-Basin. Once you visit you'll see why one guest referred to it as 'an extraordinary place of gentle beauty, history and nature.'

What makes this cottage unique

Private, historic home with modern amenities set in a beautiful park-like setting. I provide many special touches in hopes that your visit will become the best vacation ever. Close to town, shops, national and provincial parks and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so very much for renting your beautiful home to us! We have had one of the best vacations of our lives. I've fallen so in love with Nova Scotia & we definitely plan to return as often as we can. [My daughter] had a blast at Sandy Cove and we LOVED the hike you recommended at Delaps Cove. Nothing beats an early morning hike to the shores of Fundy and watching the fog roll in over the cliffs with hundreds of inukshuks built on them.

We saw many deer on the property, a skunk, puffins & a bald eagle! What an awesome experience. E also caught a few crabs at Sandy Cove & in the Basin! She was loving it!

We sincerely thank you for your hospitality. We will be telling anyone who listens to check out your rentals while in the area. Truly breathtaking scenery and endless inspiration for an amateur photographer like myself. It was a good thing I had several SD cards with me! Haha!

I hope we meet again in the near future.

Highly recommended!

Exceeded all expectations! Gorgeous property with a delightful farmhouse in great shape and exceptionally clean. Close to town but very secluded. The kitchen was well equipped with quality pots and pans and the knives were actually sharp! This was our first visit to Nova Scotia and we were not disappointed. We highly recommend this property. We have rented numerous properties through HomeAway and other sights and this may have been the best!

Owner's Response: Dear Paul and Nan, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. I'm absolutely delighted that An Artist's House "exceeded all expectations"! Indeed the property is secluded but not isolated. Once you arrive, it doesn't take long for you to forget about the stresses of the outside world. I also try to think of what my guests, many of whom enjoy cooking, would need and appreciate at their home away from home (such as sharp knives). Mostly, I'm so happy that your first to Nova Scotia was a good and memorable one. Come on back! Best wishes, Andi

We had a great time here for one week in July (2014). Our 3 kids had plenty of indoor and outdoor room to play while my hubby and I relaxed between day trips. Great location too! We had looked at hotels in the area and found (for the same price!!) we could only get one room with 2 double beds on the highway! Here we had the benefit of a large, well appointed home, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, full kitchen on 60 acres! Thank you Andi for a great week and for your attention to detail! You are a wonderful host.

Owner's Response: Hi Julie, Many thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. An Artist's House is very private yet close to town, making it a great spot for guests. And indeed, you cannot beat the price! So glad you enjoyed your stay. I certainly enjoyed meeting you and your family. Hope to see you again. Best Wishes, Andi

Nice Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We just enjoyed the month of June at An Artist House in Annapolis Royal. When we arrived the apple trees were in full bloom and by the time we left the lupines and wild roses had opened up splashing the countryside in color.

The home Andi and Steve are letting out is wonderful and cozy. Yet, still plenty of room to spread out and storage space for our stuff. The furniture was comfortable, especially the bed. The kitchen was well and thoughtfully equipped with sharp knives and even containers for leftovers. The WiFi provided was acceptable. It worked best in the Sun Room, close to the router.

The property has a path to the river that connect to a walking path long the river dyke. We walked this almost every day with our two dogs that traveled with us. As we walked we saw deer, bunnies and pheasant enjoying the path, too.

And there are lots of paths in the area, we particularly liked the Belleisle walk along the marsh. We saw heron & beaver in the waters there.

Definitely stop by the German Bakery in town for a cup of espresso and a slice Apple Strudel. Yum!

The town has some fun events too. There's a Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings that are well attended. And we went to the King's Theater for a simulcast of La Boheme & King's Short annual 10 minute play competition. It was fun to pretend we were locals and get a taste of life in Annapolis Royal.

You will not be disappointed if you spend your vacation here.

Owner's Response: Hi Todd and Linda, I've read through your review at least three times - it makes me smile every time and reminds me of why we enjoy sharing our house with our guests. The fact that you stayed for a month makes you ideal ambassadors! You know the house, its amenities and comforts well. Your beautiful description of walks to the river and the natural rhythms of the wildlife that share this setting certainly reflect a precious part of An Artist's House experience. I'm so pleased your enjoyed your vacation in Annapolis Royal - for me, that's what it's all about. Hope you'll return. Andi

Just what the doctor ordered!

  • 5 of 5

We have friends in Toronto who stayed here last year and highly recommended the house as a beautiful getaway retreat. Wow! What an amazing place. The house, the setting (like having your own park), and oh my gosh, the quiet were just what the doctor ordered. Nearby Annapolis Royal is enchanting and so friendly. People made us feel right at home. Loved our meal at Garrison House, and the guided walks around town. The town's gardens are a treasure. But mostly we just loved being ensconced in the warmth and beauty of Artist’s House and its wide open views to the water. Andi, the owner, has added all the amenities you’ll need and some. She’s a wonderful host, who clearly cares about her guest’s comfort and enjoyment. We’ll be back!

Owner's Response: Hi Denny and Melinda, You summarized it all by saying An Artist's House is a beautiful getaway retreat where you can unwind and regenerate. Guests often tell me that from the moment they walk through the door they feel completely at home. Enchanting is a great way to describe Annapolis Royal, too. It's a special place where it doesn't take long to make friends and good memories. Thanks so much and hope to see you next year. Andi

Five Star Plus!

  • 5 of 5

During the last week of September 2013, my husband and I had the good fortune to spend a delightful week at the absolutely charming ‘An Artist’s Home’. Situated in the quaint and historically packed area of Annapolis Royal, we found this rental to be everything, and more than advertised. This nearly 200 year old home, while still remaining true to its traditional heritage, has been beautifully updated, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels more as a home rather than a house. We loved the wonderful mix of cosy century home living, coupled with the luxuries of updated appliances within a nicely modernized kitchen. The beds were a good quality, and the sitting areas were comfy. We greatly appreciated the attention to detail; as everything from a well-stocked library, inspiring art, cosy throws and an information binder with useful local information were just a few examples the extras. The property is nature lovers dream, and by its sheer grandness and beauty is truly amazing. It is excellently maintained with a lovely view of the Annapolis River. We found ourselves out walking the trails before we had even unpacked our car. We were well received by Andi (the owner), who has a good knowledge of the area and gave us excellent site seeing advice. Although, never intrusive, she made herself available as needed. We found Andi to be well organized, and prompt in all our communications. Overall it was a wonderful experience, and we hope to return.

Thanks Andi

Our family of four had a wonderful week at The Artists' House. It has everything we could possibly ask for, plus a beautiful setting and nature all around. Annapolis Royal is just a short distance and there was plenty of things to do and explore in the area.

Lovely accommodations, warm reception, and a gorgeous corner of the world.

Thanks Andi!

The Annapolis Royal area is that special kind of place that lingers sweetly in your mind and memory. Cradled within a land and seascape of serene natural beauty, the region rests in the palm of a long glacial valley severed by the Annapolis River and Tidal Basin. Buffered by two mountain ridges on the north and south, the land on either side of the river widens into a broad swath of salt marsh and cultivated earth. Over the North Mountain lies the Bay of Fundy and to the south, an expanse of lakes, a national park and protected wilderness areas. The region’s cultural hub, the town of Annapolis Royal, is one of the Maritimes most culturally diverse and welcoming communities. With its beautifully preserved historic and architectural legacy of Victorian, Georgian and Arts & Crafts homes, it is the perfect backdrop to the artistic energy emanating from the town’s waterfront shopping district, art galleries, farmers’ market, gardens and theatre. Recently named to the top 12 list of This Old House’s “Best Old-House Neighborhoods,” Annapolis Royal also garnered praise by the CBC as one of the Maritimes top ten “most engaging and culturally dynamic communities.” Last year the Canadian and International Garden Tourism Awards lauded the town’s Historic Gardens as one of the “Top five North American Gardens Worth Travelling For.”

Things to see and do:

An Artists' House is a wonderful place for relaxing after a day of activities, which could include birding and whale watching, hiking, kayaking, bicycling and beachcombing. The Annapolis French Basin Marsh is great place for birding, particularly during migratory months. Whale watching tour boats in nearby Digby Neck will show you whales and other Atlantic marine wildlife including seals and sea birds in their natural habitat. The Shore Road is a beautiful drive winding along the Bay of Fundy coast and features three lighthouses, seven cobble beaches, five fishing wharves, and a seafood market at Parker's Cove. There are nearby provincial parks, nature preserves, and art galleries that you can visit. Kejimkujik National Park with many levels of hiking trails, is a 35-minute drive and offers canoe and kayak rentals. The O'Dell Museum, Sinclair Museum and North Hills Museum showcase local history. The area has two 18-hole golf courses. There are music concerts and films at King's Theatre, a chocolatier shop and a variety of restaurants for eat-in or take out. The Farmers' Market across from the Annapolis Wharf runs Weds. and Sats. all summer.

Other Activities:

Visit Upper Clements Adventure Park with 30 rides and a challenging wooded zip-line course or hike along the spectacular Delaps Cove Trail on the Bay of Fundy. Spend the day at nearby Raven Haven Beach. Visit an artist's studio or take in an art workshop or coffeehouse evening at ArtsPlace, the region's public art gallery. Join a Candlelight Grave Tour at Fort Anne National Historic Park or meet the 'ghosts' at the Sinclair Museum.
