|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
We know this property is Top Picks… we rented it ourselves for three years then bought it!
Hale Ipo “Sweetheart House” has ideal accommodations for a family or several couples/individuals. To our local guest, this is not a venue for a large party or ceremony.
Hale Ipo is in a great location on Beach Road in Hawaiian Paradise Park (Kaloli Point) ~private, fruit trees and fabulous flora, short walk to ocean cliffs (sea turtles year-round, whales in winter), miles of ocean trails (one hour walk to secluded beach), and a panoramic view of Mauna Kea from the wrap-around deck.
The elevated living space is designed to capture the ocean breezes and sounds while providing tree top views of birds in flight. (There are large ceiling fans in every room… we rarely use them!)
After a great night sleep on our comfortable beds (tree frog noise is minimal), plan your day of Big Island fun including visits to Volcano National Park (active volcano), Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, numerous beaches (white, black, or green sand), waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and unlimited recreational destinations (guide books and recommendations provided).
Or be truly adventurous… you are in Hawaii- plan nothing and live in the moment!
e komo mai (Welcome)! Greg & Laura Garrison, Owners
The house was well kept and had all of the amenities we needed - and then even more that we hadn't anticipated on needing! I enjoyed perusing the yard to find the fruit that was growing and having some for a snack. Seeing the sun rise over the trees from the sun room was beautiful as was being lulled to sleep by the sound of ocean waves and birds. The house is very close to a path that leads to ocean cliffs and a great view. I had such a great time that I am considering visiting this rental home again some day and bringing even more of my family along!
The house is really lovely-- clean, nicely decorated and well stocked for cooking. We enjoyed our stay.
We stayed for four nights with a party of seven, five adults and two children and were very impressed with the property.
The location was perfect for our stay. Near by there is short lava path that one can walk down to the ocean cliffs. We were also just a few minutes from a town to do our grocery shopping and just a short drive to Hilo so we were able to explore that side of the Island. We also used it as our base to explore the volcano as well as the botanical gardens and Akaka falls.
The owner Laura has done an exceptional job to think of everything that you possibly could need and more during your stay. The house is very well-equipped with a full kitchen well as an additional blowup mattress if needed , and we were quite comfortable and felt we had more than enough room for a large party.
The Communication with the owner as well as the directions were superb.
We highly recommend this property if you're wanting to stay and explore the east side of the island!
This is a beautiful setting, a house thoughtfully and tastefully set up for a wonderful time in Paradise and Paradise Park.
Access to the beach, grounds replete with flowers and fruit, safe, secluded; yet with easy access to Hilo and its rich history, culture and indigenous flavors,
A visit here is not complete without paying respects to Pele at nearby Volcanoes National Park for breathtaking views of a live volcano, walks either easy or challenging through moonscape craters, lava flows, forests and sulfur steam vents (say hello to the wandering Nene).
The visitor center in he National Park has substance rather than kitsch and enjoy probably my favorite gallery in all of Hawaii -- the Volcano Art Center (VAC).
And, oh, the rainbows and turtles lollygagging about on the pehoehoe rocks!
Get a sense of Puna region before coming, so you know what to expect. Hale Ipo will then be a place with life-changing powers.

GREAT Love suffuses us here
Hale Ipo is filled with amazing peaceful energy, georgous blooming trees and flowers, and fruit ready to enjoy. Property was clean to perfection and very well maintained. Description was accurate and amenities more than one would expect. The kitchen is better equipted then mine. Property was easy to locate in quiet neighborhood. You could hear surf in morning over coffee. The tree frogs sang us to sleep every night and song birds awoke us in the mornings. Laura and Greg were wonderful hosts providing us with easy to follow directions to the property and fresh frozen bananas for yummy smoothies. So enjoyed Hale Ipo that Wednesday of our stay, we never left. Spending the entire day enjoying this beautiful home and grounds. Our trip to Hilo was for Merrie Monarch Festival which we completely enjoyed. We also visited Hilo Hatties and Big Island Candies. We will recommend Hale Ipo to our friends and are looking forward to a return visit.
This home was true to all the listing information. It had everything we needed to relax and everything we needed to go out and play. From the well stocked kitchen (i love to cook and this home supplied all the necessary tools) to beach towels and chairs to snorkel gear and bicycles . We had a great nights sleep every night , the beds were comfortable and the sheets smelled so great. This home is in a good location to go out and explore all the big island has to offer. The home was clean and well furnished, the ability to open the sliding doors provided a wonderful breeze after a long day of hiking. Coming from New England we loved hearing the tree frogs at night (they sounded similar to peepers ) Kapoho tide pools were a favorite of ours, along with the green sand beach, black sand beaches . We did go to the west side of the island two different times to do the night manta ray snorkel and dolphin/whale watch with Jacks Diving Locker . What a well run relaxed company. We swam with dolphins, and saw about 10 whales breaching. The night snorkel was an amazing experience, we highly recommend it, one of a kind ! As for restaurants ..... we ate at so many for dinner its hard to say which one was our favorite, it all depends on your taste. The freshest fish iv'e ever had was on this island. We have all ready talked about planning a return trip! I Me and my husband have truly enjoyed our vacation here at this home, leaving was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Mahalo to the owners !
The 'Big Island' is not so big! You can drive from one side to the other in a couple hours.
Renting on the eastern side of the island offers a retreat from the tourism and crowds of the Kona district, while allowing easy access to the rest of the island's attractions.
Start your day with a short walk to the ocean cliffs and visit the honu (sea turtles) and whales (winter months).
Enjoy walking the miles of ocean trails, or pack your swimsuit and detour through the woods for a one hour hike to secluded Shipman's Beach.
Explore the surrounding area on bicycle, or ride a short distance to the ocean cliffs at the end of our street.
The nearby town of Pahoa hosts a variety of stores and services. Take advantage of the large outdoor swimming pool at Pahoa Community Aquatic Center, no charge. Other local adventures include snorkeling at the Kapoho Tidal Pools, and a visit to clothing optional Kehena Beach off Route 137 (drum circle on Sunday).
Your vacation wouldn't be complete without one or more visits to Volcano National Park. Witness an active volcano, view petroglyphs, hike a crater trail, and explore the underground lava tubes (bring a flashlight).
Also plan to watch the sun set from above the clouds by the visitor center at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy on Mauna Kea. After dark, stargaze using an array of powerful telescopes, then join in the nightly presentation and discussion to identify the constellations (dress warm!)
For an enjoyable day trip, drive the scenic northern coast to various waterfalls, botanical gardens, and overlooks including Akaka Falls, Waipi'o Valley, and the Pololu Valley.
Or visit the cattleranch town of Waimea on your way to beautiful Hapuna State Beach on the northwest coast.
Travel the southern coast to South Point (the southernmost point in the US) and hike to Green Sands Beach...or continue up the coast for kayaking and primo snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay. Spinner dolphins frequently circle the bay and often swim near or under your boat.
For a day of shopping and gallery hopping in Kona, cut across the interior of the island on the newly paved Saddle Road. Bring a jacket as the temps will drop in the higher elevations.
Hawaii promotes wonderful farmer's markets. Every Sunday, our local Makuu market features a taste of Hawaiian cuisine, fresh breads and produce, an assortment of art and crafts, and live entertainment.
For additional sight seeing destinations, recreation and leisure activities, consult the various guides provided at the house. For a list of festivals and live entertainment, pick up a current copy of Ke Ola magazine (free and available outside Island Naturals food store in Pahoa).
