Recently and immaculately renovated 350 square-foot cottage on a quiet street in Old Town. Live life in true Keys fashion. Close enough to walk to the merriment, far enough away to be tranquil. This cottage is five blocks from Duval Street and six blocks to the beach/tennis courts. Full kitchen, queen bed, 900 square foot deck with pool, outdoor dining table and umbrella, beautiful gardens, private off-street parking, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV, and Wi-Fi; linens and towels are provided.
My husband and I bought this circa 1919 property to set down roots and raise our family. The front house on the property was a single- story 600 square foot mess with a tropically overgrown backyard; what is presently the cottage was originally a separate grandfather's abode.
Kari S. Hjerpe purchased this cottage in 1988
As soon as we macheted our way around the property, we were able to see a gem through the detritus and decay: a large property for Old Town (55'x100'), with lovely high walls for privacy, plenty of space for grass and gardens, a fresh-water well, and two large bunnies living an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. But really, we bought it for the Cuban food around the corner.
The location of this property is perfect for us. We wanted an in-town lifestyle, but did not want to be so far downtown as to be impacted by the decibel level of Duval Street. From here it is a quick walk to downtown fun or to the beach; the best of both worlds and tropical gardens, too..
Loved our stay here. Cottage was just right; enough room to move around, and the yard was fantastic and well maintained. The lovely plants and decorations gave the place the feeling of a secluded sanctuary. Loved having coffee on the deck in the morning or finding an afternoon retreat by the pool. Decor in the cottage is light and happy; everything is clean and fresh. Air conditioning and ceiling fans keep it comfortable. Kari thinks of everything to keep her guests happy, and was available and happy to answer any questions we had. Wonderful amenities including plentiful pillows on the bed; lawn chairs and a cooler available for a beach day. The cottage is in the backyard of the main house, but no one intruded on our privacy or limited our use of the yard and pool. It felt like we owned the place! Within walking distance of the beach and Duval St; but we found bikes to be a great form of transportation. There was a place to rent them only about a block and a half from the cottage.
Highly recommend a day trip to Dry Tortugas. Also enjoyed a Fury catamaran sunset sail. Dining at the Conch Seafood Republic was great; we also treated ourselves to lunch at Latitudes on Sunset Key (a little pricey, but lunch is much more affordable than dinner!).
Would recommend this property to anyone wanting a fun but relaxing vacation in Key West.
My husband and I loved our accommodations. It's beautifully decorated, spacious for 2 people and the deck and pool were fantastic. We will definitely be back and I'm recommending it to anyone I know heading to Key West. Keri went above and beyond in making sure that we had everything we needed. We can't thank her enough for making us feel so welcomed. It was great having a full kitchen, grill and washer & dryer. We saved money and generally ate healthier by making our own meals - breakfast/lunch on the deck and dinners out. We love the fish sandwich at Fogerty's and pulled pork sandwich at Sandy's Café. No trip is complete without eating at each twice.
If I was traveling solo I would also recommend this place for a private retreat. Yoga or reading by the pool would be nice. Keri has a green thumb so the plantings and the high walls really make you feel like you have your own private oasis.
We did have some problems with the Wi-Fi inside the cottage which Keri tried to address. For us it worked well outside on the deck but it was spotty inside when we wanted to surf while lying in bed. Not a deal breaker for us though. It made us spend more time outside in the beautiful sunshine or finding other things to do while inside in the air conditioned room.
Go ahead and book here. You won't be sorry.
We spent 6 days in the Kari's cottage.
Everything was as advertised. The cottage is very well located near Duval street but in a very quiet street. It is fully equipped and the pool and the terrace are very nice.
Kari was perfect, unobtrusive but always available for advice.
We rented bikes during our stay. Key West with bike is ideal to discover the city and beaches.
We recommend this place without hesitation.
A big thank to you Kari !!!!

Description and photos don't do this jewel any justice! PERFECT. Very clean with pretty much anything you'd need. Great privacy and wonderful interaction with Kari, the owner. We had bikes for the week and enjoyed being away from touristy Duval St. but within easy bike ride of anything and everything you could want to do... or eat. After many trips to KW, this will be my go-to accomodations for the future. Loved being in a neighborhood and out of the crowds. Don't miss eating at Garbo's or El Siboney...the latter of which is an easy walk away. Thanks, Kari!!!
My wife and I traveled to Key West for 4th of July. We had an amazing trip, and our stay in the cottage was perfect. We had breakfast on the deck each morning, swam in the pool, and were pleased to find that the cottage had more than enough space.
The location is a bonus as well. We walked anywhere we needed to go. We went for a run each morning along the beach, which is just a few blocks away from the cottage.
Our favorite restaurant was El Siboney, which is right around the corner from the cottage. We had breakfast delivered from Cuban Coffee Queen two mornings (the cafe con leche is a must). We also recommend Lobo's, Schooner's Wharf, and The Cafe for dinner. Happy hour was a lot of fun at the Conch Republic. Dante's has a great pool party on the weekends. The Porch is good spot for craft beer. We also went stand up paddleboarding at Lazy Dog on Stock Island and had a great time. We are looking forward to our next trip to Key West!
What a quaint little hideaway! After battling Nor'easter Nemo up in Boston, this was the perfect getaway spot. The property is beautifully maintained, the cottage is clean, bright, comfortable, tastefully decorated, and adorned with quality appliances and fixtures. The pool is steps from your door and refreshing. The property is perfectly located close enough to the popular Duval Street yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle where you can completely relax. You are a short walk to the excellently eclectic Flaming Buoy Filet Co. and El Siboney Restaurants. Sushi lovers do not miss Ambrosia on Simonton Street (near Duval) and Thai Island on Palm Avenue. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that Kari is the perfect host!
We will be back!
