Family of 7 from the Midwest

  • 5 of 5
We have been renting houses through VRBO all over the country for the past 5 years, and the Simon house was another beautiful find. We had never been to Vermont, so Paul was helpful early on when I asked for hiking, biking and canoeing suggestions. His recommendations of hiking Mount Wantastiquet in New Hampshire and biking/hiking the West River Trail were helpful, and he also suggested the Brattleboro Farmers Market on Sundays.
The Simon house is near the quaint town of Brattleboro, where we found Mocha Joe's for coffee every morning, as well as a couple of bakeries; for dinner, we enjoyed Top of the Hill Grill, Three Stones (Mexican), TJ Buckleys, and we would have tried other restaurants in town if the Brattleboro Food Coop didn't provide wonderful fresh food that enabled a family of 7 to prepare a couple of dinners in the immense, fully-stocked kitchen in the Simon house.
The Simon house is also situated in a location that day trips are easily accessible from. We visited Manchester, Vt., where the Hildene estate of Robert Todd Lincoln was available to tour, as well as the uniquely unusual Northshire Bookstore, and the fabulous Silver Fork Restaurant , which requires reservations several weeks in advance. Near Manchester is the Bromley Mountain Adventure Park, which is another full day trip. In addition, we happened to be in Vermont during the Marlboro Summer Music Festival, and we saw a compelling concert our last evening in Vermont.
Now, for the Simon house. We were greeted by the caretaker, Craig, who presented a very clean house and provided detailed instructions in the operation of the house. He also called midweek and came out to refill/repair a couple of minor items. The way the house is designed, each bedroom provides ample privacy. My son and his wife pretty much had their own suite on the second floor, on one side of the house, and the 2 bedrooms on the 3rd floor were perfect for my daughter and sister-in-law on the other side of the house.
Every day, we noticed something unique about the house. The two outside patios provided great reading/knitting atmospheres during the day, and the fireplace, tiki lights and outdoor stereo added to our night time enjoyment. I loved the wall tile installation on the 2nd and 3rd floor bathrooms, and the fireplace wall. I also loved the light fixture in the 2nd floor bedroom which created designs on the walls and ceiling. Unique house!

Owner's Response: Tina's review reads like an advertisement for Simons House but it was not only detailed and comprehensive but also unsolicited. Submitted by a member of an appreciative and considerate family, it is gratifying to hear that we have provided what we promised and that it was everything that they expected. Our experience was as good as theirs was in that they were so pleasant to deal with.

Exceeded expectations by a country mile

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this house with a large group and we couldn't have asked for a better house to stay at. The house itself is an architectural masterpiece but add in the incredible sweeping views of the countryside and this place was off the charts. The deck with the outdoor jacuzzi got plenty of use and so did the outdoor fireplace with attached grill. I found myself sitting in a chair multiple times and just staring off into the distance in absolute awe of the views. The kitchen had everything a gourmet chef would need and the dining room was massive and able to hold all of us comfortably. The bedrooms were great and extra blankets and linens were available if we needed them. The living room had a huge pull down projector screen and cable to occupy those who wanted to watch tv. The only small issues we had were spotty internet connection from the router in the kitchen/dining room side of the house and the stereo system when plugged into an iphone/ipod didn't sound great...but we managed and that was hardly an issue. Really everything about this house was INCREDIBLE. I would highly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Derek,
Thanks for bringing the stereo/I Pod situation to our attention. Someone, apparently, had abused the cord before your stay and it has now been replaced. It works great again.
We're glad to hear that your stay was enjoyable and that we exceeded your expectations.

Simply Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5
We spent Mother's Day weekend at the Simon's House. A beautiful, unique, and amazing place to relax and spend time with family. The house was comfortable and beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. Craig was very helpful and patiently explained all the features of this unique home and was available if we had any issues with the house (which we didn'). The two decks and the back yard were private and our dogs loved running around in the grass and play ball and wanted to spend all their time outside! We didnt get a chance to use the grill or the hot tub because of the weather, and hopefully will get a chance to do that next time. We got lots of decorating inspiration from this house and will definitely apply some of these ideas to our own home! We will definitely come back to this house and would recommend it to friends and family. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.

Owner's Response: Ghazaleh,
Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to Simons House. We're very happy to hear that your family and your dogs had a good time. It's also nice to hear that you appreciated the decor and art work. We have tried to make the house comfortable and inviting for people regardless of their interests or reasons for visiting. Generally, it seems that visitors enjoy the grill and hot tub above all else so it's especially gratifying to know that you had fun even without taking advantage of those features.
We do hope you return when you can.
Paul, Vicki, Craig and staff.

Simply Perfect

  • 5 of 5
I rented this amazing house with a group of co-workers. Our intent was to get away for a few days of good food and conversation. I could not have asked for a better house. The views from all the rooms were stunning and the cooking facilities second to none. The music collection was like none that I had seen before, and the sound system was awesome. The bedrooms were well appointed and offered complete privacy. The house was spotless upon arrival and the caretaker, Craig met us and explained all the complexities of the house. All and all a very enjoyable and relaxing place to stay. I look forward to returning in the summer for a golf weekend.

Welcome to where Vermont begins! Easily accessible from Boston and NYC, we invite you to leave the hustle behind and slow the pace down. Enjoy all the modern conveniences and comforts of home while immersing yourself in the beautiful surroundings, inside and out.

Dining:

Simons House is located a few miles from Brattleboro where a diverse dining experience awaits. Restauranteurs offer everything from fine continental cuisine, family fare to fast food. If you are looking for Indian, sushi or other Asian dishes you will not be disappointed. Coffee aficionados will enjoy Mocha Joe’s, our local coffee roaster that offers a variety of coffee blends, teas and hot chocolate. The Brattleboro Food Coop located downtown is a complete natural foods market, bakery and deli.

Leisure:

Crumpin-Fox Golf Club a Robert Trent Jones course and Big Mountain Skiing (Mt.Snow, Stratton and Okemo) are all within reach. Fishing, canoeing and kayaking are also great seasonal activities, as are cross-country skiing, ice skating and snow shoeing. Biking (road or mountain) will add vigorous exercise to your sightseeing experience.

Recommendations:

* Visit local artist studios, galleries, antique shops and sugar houses where pure maple syrup is made. Brattleboro, which was voted among America's top 100 artist communities, hosts Gallery Walk the first Friday evening of every month.

* Take a scenic drive highlighted by old covered-bridges and the white church steeples of yesteryear, babbling brooks and stone bottomed rivers with unmatched foliage colors in Autumn. During the summer months cool off with a dip at the Green River Village timber and stone dam by the covered bridge.

* A perfect way to experience the area’s natural beauty and local folklore is to reserve time to visit Madame Sherri’s Forest. Learn about this local legend from the Ziegfeld era and explore the grounds on footpaths leading to the castle ruins and around the very serene Indian Pond.

* The Brattleboro Area Farmers' Market is held Saturdays, May-Oct. Enjoy this folksy experience where area farmers, crafters and food vendors converge.

* An abundance of easy to moderate hiking is at hand. A climb to the top of nearby Mt. Wantastiquet is moderately difficult and will reward you with gorgeous panoramic views of Brattleboro and surrounds. Chesterfield Gorge with its waterfalls is another popular attraction that is less physically demanding.

* Arrange a wine tour or tasting at one of the area’s wineries located in nearby Jacksonville or Putney, VT.

* Family fun at Six Flags Amusement and Water Park in Agawam, MA is an hour and fifteen minutes away.
