Photos and Description of the Ithaca vacation apartment rental
1 bedroom with queen sleeper sofa, sleeps 4

In the heart of the Finger Lakes, this apartment is just ten miles from Ithaca and twelve miles from Watkins Glen. So if one of you is into NASCAR racing and the other wants attend lectures and music, you can have it both ways from here. No traveling down long back roads, either, since we are right on State Route 79, the main road between them.

The apartment was completely renovated and updated in 2012. From the photos you can see that the floor plan involves a large open living space with kitchen, dining area, and living room. Oversize windows allow for plenty of light in both the morning and the evening, and the view out every window is green with trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers for the whole summer season.

The bedroom and adjoining bath can be closed off from the rest of the apartment for privacy. Plenty of parking, too.

There is a lane that leads back to the rear of the property, which visitors are welcome to use. It goes past the new and old planted areas and back to a berm pond and stream. There are large open lawns that allow space for your dogs to play and exercise, and they are welcome to go swimming in the pond, too!

This cozy accommodation is located on a property which operated for many years as one of the premier landscape plant nurseries in the area. Those days are gone, but the gardens are still there, and rejuvenation efforts are under way.

About Allen Reed

I was born and raised in New York’s 1000 Islands region, even further north than the Finger Lakes. But after I graduated, I left to go to the “big city” - Washington, DC. A few years later, I moved to Baltimore, MD, where I met my wife, a native Marylander. We both watched in dismay as all of the places she used to play as a child fell to the bulldozer and the march of suburbia. After 20-some years, we decided to act on our dreams of moving to the “country” where we could have bigger gardens and possibly even a few chickens.

Whenever we would visit the Finger Lakes, we would find others who had similar dreams to ours. People who had left the high-pressure, high-powered jobs in the city and started digging in the dirt and making things with their hands and growing healthy foods for themselves. Everybody seemed to be optimistic and enthusiastic. We made up our minds that this is where we wanted to live.

After shopping around for a couple years, we found the perfect property in 2007. Though we didn’t actually move in until 2012, we had our new home, and our new life ahead.

Why Allen Reed chose Ithaca

There are many obvious amenities on the property that our guests appreciate as much as we do ourselves. The large open lawn adjacent to the parking area is great for tossing a ball or playing fetch with Fido. Traveling dogs can stretch out after a long ride in the car.

There is a grassy lane that makes a perfect walking path to the other areas of the grounds, over 11 acres total.

This summer, we will be installing a raised garden bed with fresh vegetables for use by our guests. Imagine how good that heirloom variety tomato will taste in your salad or sandwich.

The apartment is one of two that are attached to a 6-bay carriage house. There are no shared walls between the two apartments.

As mentioned in the apartment description, our location is smack dab in the middle of all the action in the Finger Lakes region. Ithaca, Watkins Glen, Burdett, Trumansburg, Odessa, Enfield, Newfield, Hector, and Montour Falls are all within a fifteen-mile radius.

What makes this apartment unique

My wife and I are very proud to be able to take our turn as “caretakers” of this historic property. The main house is not included in the rental, but it still provides a very dignified and noble view from the front porch of the apartment. There is a New York State historical marker tells that the house was built in 1815-20, and was originally occupied by the Honorable Henry Fish, who was the first assemblyman from Schuyler County, and chairman of the first Board of Supervisors. Further history of the building tells that one part was originally constructed as a Masonic Lodge in the early part of the 19th century. As you stroll around the grounds, remember that you tread a path that’s nearly two hundred years old.

Drink in all of the joys and entertainment that the Finger Lakes has to offer, and come home afterwards to a peaceful night’s rest in the quiet hamlet of Mecklenburg.

The Finger Lakes Region of central New York is one of two main wine-producing areas in the state. Mecklenburg is conveniently located between the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. There are over 50 wineries within 15 miles, over 100 within an easy day's travel, and the closest one is only 8 miles away.

The region is fortunate to have many spectacular natural wonders, especially the deep gorges and waterfalls. Hiking trails afford ample opportunity for photography and sightseeing.

Nearby Ithaca is home to Cornell University, Ithaca College, and other institutions of higher learning, with the dynamic night life, sports, music and theatrical activities associated with student life.

If you are into quieter pasttimes, the Finger Lakes National Forest is a 10 minute drive away. Sapsucker Woods is a world-class birdwatching area with frequent guided tours led by professional naturalists from Cornell. The Museum of the Earth (15 minutes away) has paleontological exhibits and descriptions of the local geographical features that are the source of the area's geological wonders.

Nice Place, clean and cozy. Very friendly owners. Cornell is about 12 miles easy drive. We will certainly recommend our friends visiting Cornell to stay here. We had a great time. We certainly will stay in this place again.

We stayed over Labor Day weekend. It was a very nice stay. We were probably 15 minutes from a couple small towns. Wine touring was great. Tons of wineries near by. The owners were wonderful. We also loved all the waterfalls. Don't forget to check out the falls at Watkins Glen. The property was nice to let our dog run after our long drive. Thanks for a great weekend.

Friends stayed - they LOVED it!

Submitted: July 1, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We had friends of ours visit for a long weekend. Here is a quote from their email thank-you note:

"Allen, we had a great time at your place last weekend! It was so convenient to let Dave go off to NASCAR-Land in Watkins Glen, while I took Ellen to the Ithaca Commons. She and I shopped 'til we dropped... LOL!

We have always stayed in hotels before, and I can't tell you how much nicer it was to have a kitchen! We saved so much money by being able to cook right there.

You guys did a great job with the renovation. It was comfortable and quiet, just like you said.

See you next year for the festival!"

Vacation Rental in Mecklinsburg, NY 3001678

We had a wonderful time in the Finger Lakes region - would recommend to all. This rental property was clean, well equipped and comfortable - always a nice air flow so no real need for AC. Used the fan one day only. The owners are down to earth and vested in their property. They went beyond what was expected as far as a few items to get us started. Allen and Linda were available by phone any time - not that we needed to call them once we got there. They provided some suggestions for dinner and hiking sites, which is what brought us to the area. We would definately stay again - loved having a home away from home without a hotel feel.
