Awesome Week at Vivenda Clayton

Well, we heartily enjoyed our stay this past February! The house is in a wonderful location in Ribeirinha - a quiet area, but conveniently close to the larger town of Ribeira Grande, which provided for all of our shopping needs. You’ll find the house situated on a beautiful little street lined with magnificent eucalyptus trees and a babbling brook, complete with miniature waterfalls. The house itself is very nicely appointed with everything you might need for a stay of any length and has a cozy backyard with a garden, BBQ and fireplace. The backyard also offers privacy with a charming surround of tall rock walls. The immediate area by the house was particularly nice for taking a leisurely stroll, winding first through old narrow streets and then into open farmland. Only 10 minutes or so away from the house (by foot), we came to a roadway carved through the volcanic rock leading down to the ocean where we discovered relics of past whaling days.

Rent a car and the entire island becomes available to you for the exploring – day trips easily permitted us to see every corner. Whether we chose the Via Rapida (new highway) or the winding old mountain roads, the scenery was breathtaking as we traveled over deep green gorges, through quaint villages and on sheer cliffs alongside the ocean. Some of our favourite things were the tea museum, and the hot springs and dinner cooked in the ground (both at the town of Furnas). As golf lovers, we really enjoyed both of the island courses which offered a good challenge as well as the requisite stunning scenery. Ask about discount rates which the owner has pre-arranged.

A Cozy Home Away From Home

This summer, my husband and I enjoyed a most relaxing week long vacation in the Azores. This nicely appointed home was an ideal and very comfortable location to put up our feet and relax after our island explorations each day. This vacation home was perfect in every way! The modern kitchen with granite countertops had all of the necessary equipment to prepare and serve our own meals. After a busy day on the road, having a nice, clean place to prepare our evening meal was just right for us. The living room had a comfy sofa for stretching out to watch some TV (or catch some ZZZ's). Again, this arrangement was just right for us. The good water pressure in the shower/tub combination in the bathroom made for a pleasant start to each vacation day. The bedrooms were comfortable with plenty of room to organize our belongings. There was also a lovely and private patio and flower garden to enjoy behind the house complete with outdoor furniture to sit on to enjoy the fresh air. In addition, there was an outdoor fireplace and BBQ for those so inclined. We would highly recommend this lovely home away from home for people who enjoy setting their own vacation pace and who enjoy an attractive and inviting place to recharge their batteries after a busy day of golfing, whale watching, shopping or sightseeing.

Fabulous first visit to Açores.

Our first trip to São Miguel was beyond fabulous and the house was everything we expected. Even though we had never been there, renting this house near Ribeira Grande turned out to be the best - it is located near everything and just about half-way along the norther coast. From there, travelling to both sides of the island is quick thanks to the main freeway that runs along most of the coastline.
The house itself was very clean and well-maintained. On arrival, we had fresh bread, butter and ham. There was also some delicious wine as well as ice-tea and beer in the fridge.During the rest of the stay, Joana (who was waiting for us with the house key) organised the delivery of fresh bread every morning - wonderful!!
Our two children (aged 7 and 9) also loved the internet access and cable TV with their favourite kiddy channels. As for my husband and I, what we loved the most was the brand-new bed - no lumpy old matress to break my back - believe me, not being able to get a good night's sleep can ruin any holiday :(
I definitely recommend a stay here.

Magnificant Central location on Sao Miquel Island

We had a wonderful holiday from beginning to end...
We were able to fly direct from Toronto to Ponta Delgada on SATA airline. It was a comfortable 5- 6 hour flight. When we arrived our owner had someone at the airport to quide us to our house. We rented a car at the airport and they also helped us with some translation, although throughout our holiday we found almost everyone was able to speak English to us.
Our holiday house was in a parish called Ribeirinha on a dead end street, overlooking a small creek with beautiful red roses growing over it. We looked across to the parish church where a parish festival was held the weekend we were there. Everyone gathers in the churchyard which is decorated with lights and banners. 2 doors down on our road was the best restaurant - "Ogatomia". The people and food were amazing and it was so nice to be able to drop in after a day of sightseeing or golf. We had everthing available for cooking our own meals also..the ultra modern kitchen was great and with no bugs to bother you eating outside on the patio was very nice. You could walk to stores for groceries or go to a larger Mercada in Ribeira Grande about 5 minutes away. Taxis were available in Ribeirinha to take you anywhere and they usually waited at the parish center at the end of our road.
Sao Miquel is only 65 km long and 18 km across but we managed to put just under 1000 kms on our rental car. There are numerous tour companies that will take you anywhere on the island also. We had fun doing this ourselves, although we did get lost several times, (we didnt rent a GPS) The island is small enough you never can go too far out of the way, but in some places you may have to share your road with a group of cows!!
There are numerous hiking routes throughout the island, whale watching, fishing and numerous other activities. (Saving these for our next trip)!! We choose to golf the two island courses. We bought a package that gave us clubs, cart and green fees for 3 days. We played Batalha 2x as it has 27 holes and Furnas once. Both were challenging and very beautiful with several holes looking out to the ocean.
There was a phone in our house for local and incoming calls. Eric. who manages the property for the owners was available for questions or needs at any time. We did not call him but he did call us a few times to make sure all was good - which was the answer we could always give him!
It was a wonderful holiday -looking forward to the next time.
