SEIUN-AN- A FORMER GEISHA HOUSE - NOW YOUR KYOTO'S EXPERIENCE

Kyoto House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-6)

Seuin-An – Blue cloud hut.

Seuin-An – is a house were the essence of Japanese tradition was taught. Dance, music, tea ceremony, flower arrangement and more, were handed down here from teacher to the young ladies who chose the world of Geisha as their way of life.

The house is centrally located in Gion walking distance to major sights and the city center’s entertainment area as well is in one of Kyoto’s famous antique shops streets.

It has been renovated to provide luxury-level comfort to its guests, yet has been designed to retain a cozy Japanese feeling with the spirit, aesthetics's, and beauty of the traditional Japanese town house.

Local Culture and Location:

Seuin-An- is within easy walking distance from the city center as well some of Kyoto’s major sightseeing spots in the Higashiyama district, the Eastern Mountains, including of course the Gion the famous Geisha district, Kiyomizu with Ninen zaka and sanen Zaka, Yasaka shrine, as well Chion in temple, Heian Shrine and more.

Seuin-An- is also a few minutes away from the Kamo river (Kyoto’s main river which runs through the city) and a great local park, where you can do as the Kyoto-ites do – take an early morning jog, stroll along the river side, or relax on a park bench and watch the world go by. Another option would be, a an early morning walk in Gion district itself to get a glimpse into the Geisha world before the tourist fills the streets.

The Heart of the City:

While it is easy to get to the city center by walking Seuin-An also benefits from good transport links. It has about 20min ride bus connection to Kyoto station and only a 5- 10 minutes’ walk to Keihan railway Shijo or Sanjo stations on the Keihan railway line. In 3–5 minutes you can also reach a bus station and access the many bus lines including the comfortable “Raku Bus” a special bus line which runs through the main sightseeing spots of Kyoto. After experiencing the heart of the city, travel back to the heart of the home and back into local life.

Inside the House:

Seuin-An - can accommodate one person or one group of up to six and has two floors of accommodation.

The first floor boasts a fully equipped kitchen, living room (convertible to a bedroom with traditional Japanese futons for up to 2), en suite western-style toilet, shower & cast iron bath, it has a laundry machine which is also a drier. Second floor accommodation (sleeps up to 4) has two bedrooms which are separated by Japanese paper sliding door( Not a proper wall). One with a western-style double bed, the second with traditional Japanese futons. As well a computer space with a computer broad band connection.

Inside the house you will also find 'Kyoto guide' with lots of maps and information on sights and things to do. In Kyoto and we are more than happy to help guests plan their itineraries while in Kyoto. Please refer to our planned tours.

Perfect Stay and Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5
Adorable gem of a place. Perfect location for seeing the sights in Kyoto. Near to dining/shopping/hiking. Management responsive to questions and provided nice touches to help navigate if you're going the self-guided route. The soaking tub was divine at the end of a long day on your feet. Stayed with mother-in-law and husband for a quick holiday and would gladly return again.

Great stay

  • 4 of 5
The house is well-equipped, but remember that the house is small (like how most Japanese houses are usually).

The living room less spacious with the new furniture (unlike the ones advertised here), just barely fitting 5 girls.

The bathroom gets cold easily, especially with the marble flooring, but taking a hot shower/bath to steam up the bathroom helps. I suggest bringing a pair of rubber flip flops. More storage space in the bathroom (more shelves/racks) would be better ;)

Bedrooms are spacious, and the thick blankets provide much needed relief from the cold.

There is a convenience store nearby, which is a plus. We also never got bored of walking past the beautiful Shirakawa-minami Dori street on our way to the house from Gion.

Wendy and her team are very helpful, and are always just a phone call away. Towels, soap and shampoo are provided, amongst laundry detergent. All facilities were easy to use with the team's clear set of instructions that was provided.

Great location

  • 4 of 5
Seiun-an is located right in the middle of an area of traditional style houses and shops and an easy walk to the heart of Gion, restaurants, downtown, temples and shrines. The location was even better than we had expected when booking. It was good to have a peaceful, comfortable and roomy home base for our 5 night stay. If you are tall, just remember to duck when going through doors. The clothes dryer gets very hot so take care if you have delicates. I would definitely stay here again.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5
A very real Japanese experience. The tatami smells, narrow stairs, close living spaces yet plenty of room and storage spaces made it exactly what I was looking for. My 11 year old daughter loved it. It couldn't have been a better location for sight seeing. Walking out the door we were only short blocks from World heritage sites of temples and shrines, ancient gardens and the night life of Gion.

Great little house in Kyoto

  • 4 of 5
This property is a great location in the northern part of Gion, just five minutes walk from the main road through Gion in Tokyo (the Geisha and historic part of Kyoto). The space comfortably slept 3 people, but you could have as many as 4-5 people and still have room to move around. The washer/dryer is a great option. Even though we didn't use the washer/dryer, there were detailed instructions on how to.
Wireless is available.
The shower room is excellent. The tub is quite deep and made of cast iron, so make sure to warm it up with hot water before stepping in.

The Perfect Location for your first trip to Kyoto

  • 5 of 5
This is a great place to stay and exactly as described on the website. It is a fabulous location with the underground being a 5 minute walk and a shopping complex about a 10 minute walk. We had 3 adults and 2 children in our party. This was manageable in Seiun-an, but not much space to spare with suitcases etc. I think 4 people is much better space wise, although maybe that's more to do with what I'm used to living in Sydney. The recommend sights information left in the house is excellent. The Arashimaya tour is a must (bamboo forest etc), and especially if you hire bicycles to get around. Definitely a highlight for all of us. The kids loved it. We cooked a couple of basic meals, which was fine, although a little more crockery would help. Wendy and her team at Windows to Japan were excellent to deal with. Will definitely use them again. Having said all that, I would definitely stay at the house again too.
