Windswept is a set of five new private villa-condos set on a bluff overlooking the blue waters of the Caribbean. Water Island is a bit of undeveloped paradise just off St. Thomas--close enough to be convenient for shopping and nightlife but far enough to be quiet and incredibly restful. Our unit is called Caribreeze and has two upstairs bedrooms (both with ocean front balconies) two baths and an open plan living-dining-kitchen area downstairs.
Honeymoon Beach--one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean--is a five minute golf cart ride away. Burgers and tropical drinks are available on the beach and Saturday night dinner under the palms is a must.
What’s extraordinary about the Windswept setting is that there are water views in both directions, sunrise over St. Thomas, sunset over Flamingo Bay and the islands beyond. Add a beautiful pool ( the lights of St. Thomas blinking in the distance), warm tropical days and balmy nights, plenty of quiet and you have your own island paradise.
We stayed in this unit with our 3 year old daughter. We had a great time, driving around in the golf cart, exploring the roads and beaches on the island. It was true that Honeymoon Beach got cruise shipped most days, but during our time the cruise shippers were not overly loud.
The house is great, and we really appreciated that Angus provided all the extras for a beach vacation, like a cooler, boogie board, snorkel equipment, beach towels, and blender for drinks. The sea breeze was definitely more of a sea wind, and when a squall would roll in, it created some serious noise on the windward side bedroom. The pool was great to have next to the condo, but the water was suprisingly chilly. We used it once and were too cold to go in again (it was Feb.).
There is nowhere to buy anything at all on Water Island, and the ferry schedule is limited, so you'll need to plan your food around it. There are groceries right at the St. Thomas side dock, and you can buy food on Honeymoon Beach at lunchtime which is pretty good. We bought food at the Honeymoon Beach grill one day and saved it for dinner.
Lastly, Mark and Vicki were extremely helpful and you won't need to worry about anything with their help. Our golf cart got a flat tire on the way to the ferry one day, so Vicki picked us up immediately and got us to the ferry in time to make it. Make your reservation and you can stop worrying.
Beautiful beaches and breathtaking views on this lovely spot in the Virgin Islands will tempt you to make this laid-back way of life permanent.
Caribreeze is a beautifully appointed, very comfortable villa sitting atop a cliff assuring constant sea breezes and fabulous water views from every room, front and back, including the shower! Pictures simply cannot capture the beauty of this place.
Access around the island is easily accomplished with the golf cart provided, and the property managers assure that your stay is worry free.
All the locals are extremely friendly and more than willing to share their island paradise with you.
A few of our favorite activities included swimming at Honeymoon beach, snorkeling and a chartered sail on the Sailboat Eden.
This is an absolutely perfect place for a relaxing get away-Paradise Found-simply loved it!
My husband, two kids and in- laws had an absolutely perfect week away on water island. The house was so well laid out and comfortable, had everything we needed to make simple delicious meals and we spent every day on the beach, snorkling, reading on the back porch overlooking the ocean, or playing in the pool. We planned our meals before arriving and brought some food with us and bought the rest at the very convenient grocerystore right at the ferry dock in St Thomas. We only had to go backs to St Thomas for groceries once and ate every meal in.
If you enjoy quiet getaways without the crowds that big resorts bring, this is your place.
We would definitely return, we loved it.
My 20-yr-old daughter and I spent the most glorious week mid-January here. The house is beautiful, well appointed and totally accommodating (and the caretakers are superb). The exceptional (upstairs)shower provides views of sunrise and sunset! We walked, read, swam, grilled, read some more. The blues and greens of the water, the scent of the Frangipani, the soft air and amazing night sky all become somewhat addictive. I haven't stopped thinking about this place since I left and I won't be happy until we've booked a return. If you want to relax in beautiful, warm surroundings, this is the place! Lucky you, lucky me.
A hidden gem - easy short flight from NYC, quick accessibility by ferry from St. Thomas - from the worse winter in the East to lying on the beautiful sunny hot beach in record time. Enthusiastic pre-arrival help from owners & as requested ongoing suggestions. Also great on island personal service by condo property couple managers, as required, (for. eg. food shopping done in advance, so set-up is simple). That is to say, we could do as little as we wanted & still have all the details in place for a fun relaxed family week in an underdeveloped natural serene island which is English speaking & friendly.
Great for kids who like to play of all ages, beautiful walks, the best beach we've ever been on, especially with small children, calm, very clean water, picturesque boats & enveloped by striking cliffs.
Don't wait until others discover this place, go now. We hope to make this our annual escape to paradise!I
We spent a great week here in February 2010. The description is absolutely accurate, except that it can't capture the unique atmosphere of Water Island in a few words. St Thomas is both a short ferry ride and a whole world away -- when you want to you can hop over and be part of the tourist mob, and then you can come back to Water Island where there's not more than a couple of hundred people on the entire island!
This villa is just what you imagine in your mind's eye. It is brand new, clean and well kept, with all the amenities of home, including a fully equipped kitchen, and a washer and dryer. There are full doors to both patios and porches on both floors, and the villa is on a ridge that gets wind from either one direction or the other. While A/C is available, we never used it during the week.
The views from the condo are terrific; you look across the shipping channel towards Charlotte Amalie in one direction, and out over the open ocean towards Puerto Rico in the other. There is interesting shipping traffic to watch on most days, including some of the world's largest cruise ships.
While the beach is a short walk or ride away, and is very uncrowded, you really don't need to go there as the small complex has its own pool a few steps from the door. If you need to connect to the larger world there is a TV with dish service, and wi-fi. There is a local couple who are caretakers, and they are very friendly and a great source of local knowledge and advice. The owner recommended that we send them a shopping list, which we did, and for a very modest fee over cost, the condo was fully stocked with food and other supplies when we arrived. They also picked us and our luggage up at the ferry dock when we arrived, and when we departed.
We are not much for big tourist destinations, and Water Island suited us perfectly. We read, napped, eat and swam. If you like crowds, or planned activities, or want to make new friends, Water Island is probably not for you. We expect that teenagers would probably be bored after a day or so.
We did spend one day on St Thomas, and had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant called Herve. Another high point of our trip was going on a group charter to Buck Island (which the condo happens to overlook) and snorkeling with green turtles! (This trip was arranged by the Friends of Virgin Island National Park; highly recommended.)
In short, if you ever really need to get away and fully recharge your batteries, this is the place
