The Dames Inn is aptly named in honor of the previous owner, Dame Catharine Carpender whose spirit can still be felt in the halls of this grand house. The home has virtually remained unchanged since the day she was built some 90 years ago. When you step through the front door you'll feel as though you've stepped back in time with original photos and architectural drawings of the home displayed in the formal parlor. The parlor, with its overstuffed leather sofas, invites you to sit and relax. Sip your morning coffee in the adjacent sun parlor before venturing out into the garden. From the parlor, open the French doors to the library and find the original built-in bookcases filled with novels, board games and a selection of DVD’s featuring movies filmed in the Wilmington area. The formal dining room boasts original wallpaper, antique chandelier, and a dining room suite with seating for eight. The fully stocked kitchen with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances is a chef's dream. The butler’s pantry has been converted into a pirate pub room—perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine after a day of sightseeing the Cape Fear region.
The Dames Inn offers four spacious guestrooms--two king master bedrooms and two queen bedrooms. There are two original Jack & Jill bathrooms which are accessible from the bedrooms they adjoin. All bedrooms and bathrooms are on the second floor; there is no elevator.
The first master bedroom features a king-sized canopy bed, oversized furnishings and original light fixtures. The second master has a king-sized sleigh bed, decorative fireplace and adjoins a private sitting room.
The third bedroom boasts original wallpaper with a charming queen-sized four poster bed while the fourth queen bedroom has access to the upstairs balcony overlooking the lovely gardens. Three of the four bedrooms have flat screen televisions with DVD player.
The sprawling front porch with inviting rockers and an old fashioned porch swing beckons you to come and sit a spell.

I fell in love with the Bergen Carpender house in the year 2001. From the moment I crossed her threshold I knew that I was about to become a part of the remarkable history and legacy of this amazing home. It was like stepping back in time as the house has remained essentially unchanged from the day it was built in 1924.
The Owner purchased this house in 2000
Wilmington is a vibrant city steeped in history and rooted in southern traditions. I love that you can walk to the downtown markets on Saturday mornings or take a short drive to the beaches in the summer. You can stroll down to the coffee shop and catch up with the locals. Summer evenings are spent on porch swings with neighbors and everyone greets you with a smile.
While this is a vacation property it is first and foremost my home and a place I wanted to share with people who would appreciate her character and her timeless beauty. Couple the charms of an historic home with the modern conveniences we've all come to enjoy and you have an incredible place you get to call home for a while. I hope that you find all that and more at the Dames Inn.
From the moment we walked in the door, we knew The Dame was the perfect place for our stay. Pictures do not do her justice, for her spaciousness and grace can only be felt in person. Our wedding party and some guests were staying at the beach while other guests were in the downtown area. The Dame's location was ideal for all to gather. For those of us staying at the house, the beds (and lovely rooms) were very comfortable. The large kitchen provided ample space for a spread of food as well as a place to prepare the flowers for our wedding. Her rich history and decor served as a wonderful backdrop for photos and stories. Unfortunately our time there was so busy, we didn't have much of a chance to enjoy all of what the area has to offer. We look forward to a return trip to take in the full flavor and would be delighted to stay at The Dames Inn again.
The Dames Inn was a perfect home away from home! We had family traveling from up and down the east coast to have Thanksgiving in Wilmington and it truly felt like a family Thanksgiving. Patricia had everything we could have possibly needed to cook Thanksgiving dinner and insisted we treat the kitchen as if it were our own. We loved our time there and are already planning to come back! Thank you Patricia!
All I can say is that Patricia is the most fabulous hostess you can imagine. She insisted we treat her house as if it was our own. We rented it for my family during my son's wedding. The house is absolutely Fantastic!! Patricia had everything looking as if it was being photographed for Southern Living but insisted we use anything and everything provided. Everything we could possibly want or need was provided. Even the neighbors were awesome!! Thank you Patricia for sharing your home with us.....it totally made our weekend the best.
P.S. Everyone loved Eddie!!
What a fabulous weekend. 8 family members were coming to Wilmington for the reggae festival and we wanted to stay together rather than in hotels. We all were mesmerized by this truly remarkable home. You can tell that this home is loved from all the beautiful details inside the home. It was a rough weekend for the festival with rain and high tides at the park but we had a beautiful place to come back too during those too often storms. The entire family congregated on the front porch with our adult beverages and talked well into the night. There is nothing more inviting than a southern porch and the Dames has a classic. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen a gourmets delight, and plenty of room for separation if you want it. Our only downside was that it was so wet we could not enjoy the garden. We hope to return next year if the festival is there.
Thank you, Patricia, for sharing your beautiful and immaculate home with us. Being able to stay at The Dame added so much charm to our special weekend. We were in the area for an important family event at Wrightsville beach and it was so nice to be able to come "home" each day to such a relaxing and beautiful environment. Anything you could need you will find at "The Dame" and Patricia has thought through everything and has included so many helpful and thoughtful and charming touches to this historical home. We plan to be back!
Everything about our stay at The Dames Inn was terrific beginning with the initial planning of our trip. Patricia is extremely gracious, making us feel instantly welcome, and providing us with some great ideas of what to see and do while in town. Our family visited for a week in order to get a feel for Wilmington since our daughter was arriving as a UNCW student. The visit was a success! The house is beautiful, historic and comfortable at the same time with all the amenities we needed. The Dames Inn is a great house in a fantastic town. Visit if you can!!
