Situated on 1.3 acres in Santa Eulalia—a rural neighborhood of Atenas—this is a place to truly call home. With steady breezes, cool nights, and the freshest air, tranquility reigns here, inside and out. The open-sided rancho is the perfect place to relax after a swim, barbecue, and have fiestas. Or sit around the beautiful table on the front porch of the house, for a magnificent view of the lush grounds, sweeping countryside, and mountains. Early morning light, casting a glow on a perfectly still pool, is magical. In the late afternoon birds come in flocks to skim the surface of the water and bathe.
The house, composed of thick concrete, has high ceilings with fans, ceramic tiled floors, granite countertops in the kitchen, handmade cabinets and furniture of fine guanacaste wood, and spacious bedrooms. The front room—a small, cozy space—is ideal for reading and small gatherings. The upstairs balcony, with its premier view, is another gathering place. While the house is graciously designed, its 1800 square feet is best suited for a maximum of 4 people. Small families and couples are ideal.
The property is 45 mintes from San Jose and an hour from the Pacific coast; its centralized location makes it an ideal base for touring. It is also the ideal place to slow down and savor life.

I came to Costa Rica looking for a place to write my book. I wanted to be close to a town where I could make friends, enjoy good food and amenities, and be a part of the culture, while having solitude amid gorgeous surroundings. Upon finding my land, which was planted in peanuts and corn, I knew instantly that it was perfect. Before long, it became a real home.
My little piece of paradise is the most serene place on earth, so pristine and quiet. At the same time, Costa Rican neighbors are close by. I can practice Spanish daily and really participate in native life when I am there.
Carolyn Hampson purchased this house in 2006
Atenas, away from the tourist crowds, is a true Costa Rican community with easy access to a variety of activities. The small town atmosphere creates a feeling of relaxed friendliness. It is midway between the central highlands and the coast, with the most ideal climate and flora in Costa Rica. This is the heart of orchid country. From Atenas, you can take many fun day trips—to the rain forest, the beach, museums and theater, exotic gardens or volcanos—and be home for supper.
We had a fabulous week in this beautiful home and setting! It is perfect for 2 couples.
The views and gardens on the property are amazing. We enjoyed picking limes from the orchard. The location is central giving you the option for many day trips or many days to lounge by the pool and enjoy the property. Carol is so helpful and Diane, the local manager is just a phone call away and made sure we had everything we needed. I also recommend you stop in to the Los Barillos Super Mercado just down the road. Our new friend Ariam works there, speaks good English and will help you with anything as well! Don't hesitate to book this place-it exceeded our expectations!
My wife Amy and I rented this property for 1-week. We spent the previous week at a Pacific coast resort with friends, but she & I also wanted to see the central valley and enjoy the ultimate in comfortable climates while escaping the snow of Western New York.
We have almost no Spanish. We knew that would not be much of a problem inside the resort. Outside the resort, we found the Tico’s very accommodating and patient with our shortcomings. If you come prepared with a dozen of the most common words and phrases, you will find they appreciate it and you will have more fun too.
In the Central Valley, we had a great adventure exploring the local shops and restaurants. We loved the local food and found the prices to be quite low in these quaint villages. As you might expect, when we ventured into the tourist zones, the mix of restaurants became increasingly expensive and less of an adventure. However, the best meal we had was at a suggested restaurant in La Fortuna, which is dominated by tourists. The restaurant and the huge meal was four star and the prices were not. On that subject, I will never forget the shock of returning to NYC prices for marginal food at the Liberia airport and the hotel we stayed in the night before our return flight home.
This property is awesome. The owner’s description and all the glowing reviews are totally accurate. The owner was a dream to work with and we took full advantage of her cheerful and consistent willingness to advise us on how to enjoy the property, the town of Atenas, the local attractions, travel, etc. Everything about the property is pristine and beautiful. The gardens are extraordinary. Diane, the property manager, could not have been more accommodating. We called her a few times for advice on the house and the area. Without fail, she was immediately available and anxious to accommodate us.
The gardener is there twice a week, so everything is always perfect. The pool technician was there on day one to ensure it too was flawless.
As for insects, we came prepared but never really noticed more than a few mosquitoes. That was after sundown or in the jungle. Surely, it helped that we were there near the end of the dry season.
Amy & I will return to Costa Rica. We will stay in the Central Valley again because we found the rest of the country too warm. I certainly hope this property is available for our next trip.
We stayed two wonderful weeks at Carol's beautiful home. The pool temperature was perfect, the Rancho outdoor kitchen was unbelievable, and the hospitality of the management and staff was incredible. The house was extremely clean and well furnished.
If you look for a place to stay in central CR, I could not imagine a better destination. It is only a couple of hours drive, or less, to most points of interest or activities that you should visit. There are several delightful restaurants and shopping opportunities available in nearby Atenas.
It takes awhile to come back to reality after being at Off the Beaten Path. Once the huge rod iron secuity gates open and Cameron drove the 4 of us onto the property we knew we were not in Kansas any more. We got out of the car and the landscape and the house came to life. The sights, the smells, the sounds, the nice breeze. Two of us ran off egerly to find the swimming pool. What we saw at the top of the stair case was an amazing view. There was a hundred shades of green splashed with red and yellow and violet and burgandy blosom that surround the grounds. The bid splash of blue was the pool. We went down the stairs drip our toes into the warm water and then saw the Rancho. Wow!!! We had must dinners cook on the grill in the Rancho. It has everything you need for out door cooking.Besides the grill there is a stove top, full size refrigerator and wonderful furniture to relax and enjoy the day or night. We saw all of this before we enter the house. From the minute you walk in the door it felt like home. Diane the property manager was there to greet us and was alway there if we needed her. Isabel, the house keeper is a delight. The kitchen has everything!! The bedrooms are large. The beds and the lines were wonderful. The breeze that comes though the widows at night make it great to get a good night sleep. The views from everywhere is the house are amazing.I could go on and on about this property but you really do need to be there to get the full expericence .Carol made it so easy for us to rent her wonderful home and put us in contact with Diane & Cameron who helped us plan our trip and also helped make it happen. From being picked up at the airport on time, go on several tours to see the country from hillsides to the Pacific coast..Plus getting back to the airport on time... Priceless!! Things to know before going...#1 Slow down. The people of Costa Rica are not in a hurry. After all .. You are on vaction! #2 Know some spanish. When trying to comunicate it will make it easier on everyone. #3 Things don't alway go as planned,so make the best of it. We truely enjoy the people of Costa Rica and the country and the Magical place called Off the Beaten Path, What started out as vaction ended up being the most wonderful, spirtural adventure. Thanks Carol,Diane P, Isabel and last but not least, Daine and Cameron. We will be back!!! And as I say near and far.. Be careful on the steps.
The house was just great - the person who helps manage the property was a great help to us too.
Can't think of one bad thing about the property (other than a rooster nearby who had an early clock).
We figured out how to sleep through this however!!
Super property that lived up to the great pictures and advertisment. Everything was in perfect condition and the property manager went out of her way to insure things were right. Even the weather cooperated! Would highly recomend renting this property if your looking for a fantastic get away in the majestic Central Valley of Costa Rica.
