We moved to the Cedar area in 1989 from Ann Arbor, and pursued careers as glass artists (now retired). We both love Leelanau County for its natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle.

John Sullivan purchased this house in 2009

This was a natural for us since this rental is only a few miles from our house making any maintenance and/or repair quite easy. The central location in the County is a plus for vacationers and tourists as any destination is just a few minutes away.

Very low traffic rural area, yet close to all the attractions of the County. Pet friendly, and close to a dog-friendly beach. The owners/caretakers live near-by in case of any unforeseen issues.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME WITH SOME ISSUES

  • 4 of 5
This was a beautiful house. It would be wrong to call it a rental, it was so clean. The upgrades that John made to the house are all top notch. Everything was thought of from the kitchen to the generous cable TV package with may free movies. Also the rural area is a plus in that you feel like you are away from it all but so close to everything. Also John is really laid back and nice. He suggested a great restaurant in town. The reason I only gave it four stars is the last day when we were there. I told John, who called the night before, that we would be ready to leave at 11 a.m. the next day. At 10:45 the housekeeper came in without knocking and asked rudely "Where are the dogs?" She saw that we were packing yet she came in, and this was before the 11 a.m. checkout. We felt our privacy was violated and told the housekeeper we had until 11 a.m. John sort of apologized but said "Oh the housekeeper has a lot of appointments today and is trying to get a jump on her day" Well our time is important too, plus we had until 11 a.m. to vacate. Even in a hotel if they see you are making an earnest attempt to vacate, they will come back and not just barge in. Oh, and by the way, we vacated at precisely 11 a.m., and if John had showed up earlier or discussed this with his housekeeper ahead of time this drama could have been avoided. I just hope in the future he talks to his staff so another family doesn't go through an experience like we had. It's too bad too, because we are in the area a lot, and would have loved to come back. But with lack of attention to detail in all areas of the business, we have to say we will NOT be back.

Owner's Response: I have to respond to this 4-star review since they're so infrequent. My employee arrived 10 minutes early, and put her cleaning supplies in the vestibule/entrance, which was open. She asked about the dogs to be sure that she wouldn't inadvertently let them out, and then waited in her car for our guests to finish packing and leave. They were obviously peeved when I arrived at 11, and I did apologized more than once (not "sort of") if they felt pressured by my cleaning-person. I did offer an excuse for our schedule (back-to-back guests), but clearly this was wrong and won't happen again unless our guests call to notify us of their departure. I think "violated" is too strong a word in these circumstances, and, under the heading of "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished", I had actually negotiated a payment plan with this guest, so he could split his balance over two credit card cycles. Yes, I am "laid back and nice", and I expect our guests to share this attitude as almost all of them do. We won't miss this family, but I will take their criticism to heart and amend our policies accordingly.

GREAT HOME, GREAT LOCATION.

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day stay at this well appointed, clean home this July!
The home is located right in the middle of the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula---our favorite place to vacation in summer. It is close in proximity to all of our favorite places....Glen Arbor, Leland, Suttons Bay and of course Traverse City.
We have been renting homes in the area for several years and my wife and I think that this home was the cleanest and felt most like home. It sits on a large lot and is very private and secluded. No expense was spared in the remodeling of this old home. It has top quality windows, flooring, cabinets, woodwork and bathroom fixtures. There is a lot of natural hickory in the flooring , cabinets, wooden blinds, and woodwork.....very impressive. Nice comfortable leather couch in living room and a large flat screen HD TV with Dish Network premium programming.
Premium air conditioning (with remote controls) on each floor and ceiling fans in the bedrooms. Beds were very comfy with premium sheets and ceiling fans. Dozens of ample, thick bath towels in each of the 2 bathrooms. Large , deluxe ceramic walk in shower in first floor bathroom....big enough to accommodate several people! Deluxe shower heads in both bathrooms. Water tasted exactly like the best city water I have tasted. Deluxe gas stove in kitchen, as well as dishwasher and full size refrigerator with icemaker.
The home has several walkout decks as well as a raised concrete terrace with a deluxe barbecue grill which came in handy. Plenty of closets for storage.
The landscaping around the home is impressive.
The owner was a great communicator and a nice guy!!
What more can I say. This place has it all!!!!

LOVED THE HOME AND LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5
John was a gracious and personable host. This home is in a very quiet location - out of the way - but close to everything. We liked that we didn't have to worry about our kids or dogs bothering anyone else as its on a large lot. We did day or half day trips around the peninsula, visited Sleeping Bear Dunes, wine tasting, the casino and multiple beaches. The home was very clean and had everything you needed. We will be back again!

PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
What a fantastic find! We've rented several houses in the past for vacations, and this one ranks among the best. It was very clean, nicely appointed, and the owner was gracious and very welcoming. There's a large yard, with room for a dog or children to play, and multiple decks for lounging. It's in farmland and quiet, but within minutes of everything the Leland/Sleeping Bear area has to offer. I wouldn't hesitate to rent this great place again!

A GREAT HOME BASE TO ENJOY THE LEELANAU AREA

  • 5 of 5
The house is exactly as advertised and the setting is very peaceful. The owners have worked very hard to make this a great place to stay. We were 10 minutes away from Lake Michigan, Leland and Lake Leelanau.
The kitchen is fully stocked with the things needed to make a quick breakfast or a fine dinner. The decks were wonderful to sit on and view the incredibly dark skies. We will definitely be back.

CERTAINLY COME TO CEDAR!

  • 5 of 5
I have nothing but good things to say about our family's stay in Cedar Michigan! The house was fully stocked as advertised and very clean and updated. There was plenty of room for our family of 6 and all the kids enjoyed the wide open space outside to run around at the end of our days there without disturbing anyone. It was just a short drive to beautiful Good Harbor beach where we watched the sunset almost nightly and also close to Lake Leelanua and the Sleeping Bear Dunes/Pierce Stocking Drive (a MUST see while visiting). We enjoyed the small town feel of Cedar, it really helped us "get away from it all" which is exactly what we were going for. The Cedar Del Sol Taco stand was among our favorite places to eat, they offer organic fare right from their farm! The Buntings Cedar market offered a good amount of produce and grocery items but its a good idea to do your major shopping in Traverse City on your way in bc there is more of a selection. We cant wait to come back and visit in the future!
