A Great Retreat
Our daughter-in-law graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Both families attended the event so we needed to secure accomodations besides their home. We planned on visiting for several days so had time to see something of Colorado other than the plains around the airport and the inside of a hotel room. The Elkhorn House was 45-60 minutes away from town but with mid-day and evening events, the distance was not an issue. Besides, waking up with a mountain / valley/ water view is worth the miles.
The facility was very clean, well supplied with essentials if you forgot an item, clean dishes, fresh beds, large rooms, well heated, wood stove, good water. The cabin is accessible from the front w/o steps or the side with steps, or the lower level with more steps. Four doors, exited to a balcony or porch, the front and lower doors did not.
The beds and furniture were very comfortable. The kitchen area was well planned. The hot water was hot. A washer and dryer were available if needed. Lots of books and board games were in various locations. There is a TV for movies only. Satellites are on the grounds but not activated. If you are in the place, don't waste your time on TV - get outside.
Since this cabin is frequently vacant, a list of directions to follow upon arrival are provided. They were simple and easily understood - how to turn on the well water, how to turn on the hot water, how to operate the wood stove, what to do with your trash, what to do when you leave, etc.
The roads are in good shape. I drove to the parking area with a rental car. Take your time going over the two humps by the cabin.
There is no bathroom on the main level, 1 up and 1 down, so that may be an issue for a handicapped person. You can see 4 other cabins from the house, but that was not an issue for us. The Elkhorn is the last house on the road so you should not have anyone driving by - private.
Be sure to read the history of the Elkhorn House. It will answer lots of your questions.
We met the owner about the time we were departing. he was there to prepare the facilit for the next guest - sheets, towels, etc. We visited for awhile. He was freindly, courteous and professional.
Our family will definitely consider the Elkhorn House for our next gathering in the Fort Collins area.
