This is a classic two story cabin that has been remodeled. The upstairs is the sleeping area with two small open bedrooms, a lofted sleeping area suitable for children and sitting area with fireplace. The downstairs includes a bathroom, kitchen and sitting area and opens onto a full deck with outstanding lake views and privacy. The property sits on the south end of Lake Papakeechie and backs up to the Tri-County game Preserve. This is the hilly end of the lake with heavily wooded lots that create a real sense of solitude. Wifi was installed in 2014.
Lake Papakeechie is a private lake that was created about 100 years ago by combining several smaller lakes. The lake is controlled by an owners' association and there is no public access to the lake. Motors of any kind are prohibited. This ensures a peaceful environment with excellent fishing and safe swimming. The lake is fed by artesian wells and water from the adjacent wetlands of the game preserve. The water is tested annually by the association and is consistently found to be extremely clean.
One is surrounded by nature here. The lake is home to diverse waterfoul and wildlife including swans, geese, ducks, great blue herons, beaver and a bald eagle. Hiking or hunting in the preserve is literally across the road. It feels secluded, yet the Lake Wawasee public boat launch is 5 minutes away.
The cabin is located at the bottom of a steep driveway and there are stone steps to the cabin and lakefront. This may be a consideration for those with mobility issues.

We are from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am a contractor and my wife is semi-retired after a career in non-profit. We enjoy outdoor activities, travel and family get-togethers. We have two sons who are married and one grandchild.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 2008
Our family has owned property on Papakeechie for over 40 years. We love the lake and the area. Our family cottage is next door to this cabin and we purchased the cabin to provide extra space when needed and to protect our investment.
This lake is a vacation for the body and the mind. There is no hustle and bustle here, no jet skis roaring by and no waves crashing to shore. The loudest noise we hear is the screams of children playing in the water.
Just wanted to drop you a line, we really enjoyed our stay at the red cottage. The fishing was good as well as the weather,we were impressed with the cabin as well, hopefully we can get back next year for a longer stay. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy your property.
My wife and I did nothing for five days except eat, sleep, read, write, play Scrabble, and take long walks with our dog. We hope to make a return visit soon, and we've recommended this rental to others. The owners went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was a pleasure. One caution we would give: the property is down a rather steep incline. We had no trouble driving or walking up and down the hill, but others might, especially the elderly. Tip: If you bring large items, such as a cooler, you'll have to walk it down a small hill to get it inside. But in general, the Red Cottage is the perfect, quiet getaway at an affordable price.
The Red Cottage is wonderful! We loved our stay here. The lake is so quite and peaceful. The views are magnificent! Our two little digs loved watching the geese and squirrels. The cottage is well stocked and had everything we needed. The gas grill is super nice as well. We were here for a family wedding. We hope to stay here again in the future when coming to visit our family. A perfect relaxing getaway on the lake!

had an absolute blast staying at this lake front house. my family really enjoyed the peace and quiet, fishing and family fun we had on our week stay there.
This was a perfect place for our long weekend. The cottage had everything we needed, was cozy and comfortable. We cooked lots of great meals and played lots of games. The lake was frozen during our stay but we found the nature preserve across the street to have plenty of hiking, birding and open water for fishing. The driveway was no problem at all - not sure what all the fuss was in other reviews. We loved it and are looking for our next opportunity to return!
We wanted a quiet weekend just to relax and we found it. The Red Cottage was perfect. It had plenty of room, fully equipped kitchen, comfy beds and a fantastic view. It was so quiet and felt like we were the only ones on the whole lake. We used the canoe and had a fire in the fireplace. The cottage itself is interestingly laid out and had a lot of character. We were able to bring our dog which was awesome and even caught a little football on our laptop via the internet. We would highly recommend it ! As other reviews have stated, it is not for the elderly, handicapped or toddlers. It was perfect for us! Thanks
My family and I really loved it here. It was fairly secluded, we really felt like we were away from the world. THe kids loved the place as much as we did. We didn't have much plans, so just enjoying the place and the lake was great. The weather was a perfect fall day. Waking up to see the fall leaves all around us through the windows in our bedroom was amazing. One of the highlights of the trip. I love fall, so this was really perfect.
I really love the rock steps down to the dock, they look old and beautiful. There were yellow and orange leaves covering everything.
We had no problems with the driveway, I could see issues if there was a frost, but it was fine.
The bathroom is simple, but perfect for a lakehouse!
Our only complaint was that there was no door on the bedroom, which meant for more difficulty in dressing/privacy. It would have been nice to have a door or at least know about it ahead of time for packing more pajamas, but it worked out fine. It just would have been nice to understand the layout ahead of time.
I really think we'll be back. The price is great, the distance perfect for us. I really want to see this place in the summertime when the kids can swim in the lake.
We did take the boat out for a short row, but it was quite windy and a little difficult to row around. Still, this place was tranquil and amazing. I loved every minute we were there.
PS. Thanks for the great games/books/movies and the plentiful cooking supplies! Worked great!

The Tri-County Game Preserve with excellent hiking and hunting backs up to this property.
