About Marty Moore Sr

My family are long-time U.P. residents who settled here in the early 1800s. I've spent a lifetime in the U.P. - both to the West (Keeweenaw area) and East to the Mackinac area and Canada. This is the most beautiful area and is as natural as it gets. So much to do and see that is not available anywhere else and I love all the water.

Marty Moore Sr purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Marty Moore Sr chose Channing

This cottage is unique - especially on this lake. The lake, spring fed, is pure and chemical free. Many homes are occupied all year long. This cottage is unique in that it is set deep in a cove - completely surrounded by deep woods - extremely private where no one can see you. The yard is vast - big enough to throw balls long distances - the water warms up quickly with the air-temperature. Fishing is great, even from the pier. The sand beach is joy for children to play in and the cottage itself has all the amenities of any home - laundry, appliances, softened water, full kitchen, phone service. The only difference is, you relax, we do the work - we clean and sanitize it like no other, child-guards are on all cupboards, air-conditioning when it is needed (not often in the northwoods) and it is near enough to the necessities of groceries, fuel, churches and restaurants.

What makes this cottage unique

The seclusion itself is the most commented item. Pure and private relaxation - rest in the hammock, sit on the 2 deck swings, have a fire going on the shoreline in the firepit or just sunbathe in the yard on the lawn or sand. We provide 2 kayaks and a pedal-pontoon craft for you to roam the lake and many coves. We provide all safety items, flotation devices and water-entertainment items like inner-tubes. It is quiet - no nearby neighbors or noises. City lights are far away and the stars rest like clouds all the way to the horizon at night - absolutely breathtaking on a clear night. The sky explodes at night in orange color and the air is a pure as it can get. Out comments have always been 5-star for enjoyment, cleanliness and attention to detail.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This cabin was the perfect setting and much more than comfortable for six adults and three children. We came from Wisconsin, Michigan and New York for a family get-together and this cabin was the perfect place to spend time as a family.

Fall getaway

  • 5 of 5

Bill and I arrived @ Moose Bay Cottage on 9/23/12. We were so excited to be there finally! The cottage was great and The Moore's are wonderful generous people. The cottage was totally equipted with everything we needed and the view was awesome. We had a very relaxing time. It rained everyday so we just did many road trips and the scenery was breathtaking. Pictured Rocks was amazing as was Porcupine Mountains in the Western part of the UP. We cooked mostly but we did go the pub in Channing called the Aces for the Friday fish fry which was excellent, and also for breakfast at the Silver Lake Diner which was yummy. (homemade bread) . We tried our luck @ the casino in Escanaba and did well for only being there a short time. We put 2400 miles on our rental car in 8 days! Thanks again to the Moore's for opening up their cottage to us! Definitely worth the trip!

Truely our home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Not even sure where to begin! Our time at the cottage exceeded our expectations. It is exceptionally clean and comfortable. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. And the experience was one that we will not soon forget.

We fished off the pier daily, and let me tell you, the fish are biting. I don't think we had to wait more than 5 minutes to get one on the lines!

The property is massive, we had to get creative on how utilize it (we don't get that type of land in our neck of the woods). At one point we had a foot race around the yard just so the opportunity wouldn't go to waste.

We spent our nights at the fire pit near the lake, playing games and laughing, listening to the coyotes/wolves howl across the lake and staring at the stars in absolute awe (heads up- the bats are in abundance but they keep their distance and entertaining to watch!)

The kayaks and paddleboat were used daily. Though it was quite the work out for some of us, it was peaceful to be out in the middle of the calm bay.

The property is totally secluded, which was honestly the selling point for us. We did run into some of the locals at times, though, and even went into town for a fish fry. Everyone we met in this small town was nice and friendly.

We took walks in the forest surrounding the property a lot. It was amazing to explore, we felt like pioneers!!

Overall, this home and our time in Channing, MI was the perfect relaxing getaway!! We’re going to try to make it our tradition to get up there every summer!

Beautiful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The listing and photos of Moose Bay Cottage don't do it justice. Extremely clean, well taken care of and full of those welcoming little things that make a vacation memorable. The owners of this beautiful spot have done everything to make you comfortable enough that you never need to leave the cottage to enjoy your vacation but if you do the extra information they've so kindly left is so organized that the only challenge our family had was deciding what we wanted to do! Thank you so much for an amazing family vacation- my teenage boys are already talking about when we can schedule another time to go back!

Owner's Response: WOW! I have had some positive reviews but this one is wonderful - wonderful. Thank you so much. We work very hard - right up to the last minute before our Guest Arrives (usualy witin an hour before) - tweaking, cleaning, sanitizing and making sure every detail is perfect. I don't want even a piece of lint on the floor when a Guest arrives. My goal is to provide each Guest the opportunity to stay in an just be alone - or go outside and enjoy the lake, nature, walks, biking or the abundance of activities in the Upper Peninsula. There is SO much to do up here and even after a lifre-time up here - my Guests are still surprising me with new finds for adventure and entertainment. Thank you so much for your comment - it shows me that we are doing it right. I promise to continue to maintain the Get-Away in the most pristeen and sanitary condition while providing every possible convenience. Thank you Again!

Moose Bay Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent time fishing. My kids caught a ton of panfish, bass, and pike. We enjoyed the iron mine tour. Went swimming in Lake Superior at little presque isle beach and saw the fireworks in Marquette. We did go to the DeYoung family zoo in Wallace which was a little bit of a drive but well worth it. We also hiked along the Menominee river at Piers Gorge. If the kids were older we would have done the white water rafting.

All in all we had an excellent time. It was also the cleanest cabin we ever stayed in.

Thanks

Dennis

Owner's Response: Absolute overall cleanliness is our top priority. We stress this in the website. In a day and age where you never know what you are facing in motels and such - you can rest assured Moose Bay Cottage is more sanitary than almost any other site. I thank Dennis for his kind comments - there is so much in the U.P of Michigan to see and do. I hope our activities folders helped. Guests come back over and over each year and always find new things to do. I hope to have Dennis and his family back again for their next get-away. Thank you so much again !

Owner's Response: Thank you! It's good to get this positive feedback. We work incredibly hard to sanitize and clean the cottage from top to bottom and add those touches that make your arrival and stay pleasant and your memories fond. The location is unique and private - we feel the accomodations should be as clean and comfortable as possible also. Thank you Again! Marty Moore Sr - Moose Bay Cottage

Well maintained cottage

  • 5 of 5

Marty is a detailed oriented host and we found everything he promised, and more. Cottage is comfortable with two bedrooms and all utilities needed for a comfortable and relaxing get-a-way. Paddleboat was fun but also necessary to get out into the lake to be able to swim. The shorefront is very soft, shallow and usable for fishing, stargazing and nice evening fires under the stars. Distances to restaurants are a good way from the cottage, except for the one about 3 miles up Rt 95, which had good food. This is a perfect place for a quiet vacation of reading, relaxing, bicycling and card playing with friends, or for hunting. View from the dock and deck had great sunsets. Cottage is clean and very well cared for by Marty. About 32 miles away on Rt 69 going East we found the Milltown Inn. It has wonderful Swedish style pancakes with Boysenberry syrup as well as good regular breakfasts. It can also be reached on a more scenic and hilly route by turning East at the BP station 7 miles South of the cottage onto Leeman Road and then turning right after it Intersects with Norway Lake Road, and then left when you get to Rt 69. Cottage was well stocked with CD's and videos. Cell phone worked in the East bedroom. Fumee falls and lake are worth a visit, just East of Iron Mountain off Rt 2, North side of the road. Not far from them is a public spring with good cold water near the roadside. Spring is on the same side of the road as the waterfalls. The guys bicycled 332 miles during our stay, three times to the Milltown Inn.
