Why Anita R. Pease chose Custer

We live just over the mountain from MAP Ranch. We love this area and this property because of it's location and the creek. MAP-Ranch is just a great location to do just about everything in the Black Hills. When we first started coming to the Black Hills we just fell in love with this area.

Custer State Park W. entrance is 1.5 miles from MAP Ranch on Highway 16A. In late September early Oct. the Park every year has The Buffalo Round-Up that has become a world class event. Horse back riders round up the Buffalo herd to check and cull the Buffalo. This is a chance to see how it is/ was in real life. There are many caves in the Black Hills to see and explore. National Parks - Wind Cave and beautiful Jewel Cave are close. Hot Springs - South through Custer State Park, has a Wild horse refuge and Mammouth - newly discovered fossils in the 1990's of Sabor Tooth Tigers, Mammoths and other fossilized ancient animals. The Mickelson Trail is at the entrance to the ranch - following it via bicycles, hiking or by horse you can see and enjoy a step back into quiet 100 year old history. Of course we can not forget Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and the 1880's Train. There is something for everyone. We love it here and think you will too. Come enjoy our home check out MAP-Ranch.com.

Notes:
Our home is a single floor, once you have negotiated the 4 steps in the garage or the 4 steps on the front porch/deck. The floors are a top quality laminate and we have rugs and carpets for ambiance. The home was built with allergies in mind. The central A/C/heat keeps the house very comfortable. There are several skylights throughout which gives nice light/ambience through out . There is a garage door opener for one (only) of the doors. The garage is oversized and an extra refrigerator is located out inside the garage - for soda or overflow of extra food stuffs for those large get togethers. There is a nice sized dining table with 6 chairs (there are two extra leaves for added size). There are 2 swivel bar stools for the island bar in the kitchen, too. If you have any questions - for particulars - please feel free to email me. I will get back with you as quickly as I can. Your laptop will work here if you have a 3G satellite wireless card. Your cell phone should also work.

This home exceeds the listing - it is fully equipped and very comfortable for our family. Anita and Mike provide top notch service and we would highly recommend this for anyone thinking of experiencing the Black Hills and Custer State Park. I recommend trying Alpine Inn in Hill City for a very reasonable steak dinner and Prairie Berry Winery for great local flavor. We will be back to this home again!

Awesome place to Stay

Mike and Anita: Thank you for the wonderful place to stay with our horses. Your home was conveniently located to Custer State Park and other horse trails in the area. There wasn't a thing that we needed while we were there. The house was so well stocked with all the necessities and then some. The horses had safe and roomy pens so when we did take a little time off of riding to do the tourist stuff, we didn't need to worry about them while we were gone. Loved waking up to the view off the front porch (the family of deer that were there everying morning and evening along with the turkeys). The cows were so entertaining to watch also. You are wonderful people and hosts to share this fantastic home with others. I hope we can return real soon, already counting the days. Thanks again for everything.
The girls from Minnesota
Owner's Response: Dear Julie, Deb, Sharon, & Becky, We were very pleased that you all could come and bring your horses to ride the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and use MAP-Ranch as your home away from home. We enjoyed meeting all of you & your horses. You four ladies got to see and enjoy a lot of these hills that many people never will because you were on horse back - the way first settlers came and saw the Black Hills! Thanks for coming and we do hope to see you again soon. The porch, wildlife, cows, and us will all be here. Mike & Anita

Kids Had A Ball!

We had a fantastic experience...even before we got there! Our host was very prompt in responding to our inquiry about the property. She gave us great information beforehand through very cordial emails.

Once we got there, we found a very comfortable and VERY well appointed home. All the amentities: tons of dishes, pots and pans to cook with. I forgot shampoo. No matter, there was some available.

Probably the best part of the stay was watching (from the super awesome front porch) our kids enjoy the property. I never thought of us as city slickers, but it was great to see our kids enjoy the simple pleasures: naming the cows, feeding the cows, watching the deer that came on the property every evening, catching crickets, collecting rocks, finding minnows in the creek. The kids were happy so the parents were happy!

The property is in a great location, just outside of Custer....lots of things for families to do in and around Custer.

This was the best family vacation to date. We will definately be coming back to the Black Hills....and we will definately try for this location again.

Thanks again for a great experience!

Owner's Response: Dear Julia M. & family,

We thank you for choosing to come to MAP-Ranch - Custer, SD for your family get together. Your appreciation of all we have to offer and sharing it with others on line is especially meaningful. Thank you. That the kiddo’s all had a great time and were able to “connect with a little of nature” is a treat in this day and time, too. The relaxed atmosphere and being able to “kick back - on the porch” is what vacations are all about. Come back and see us soon !

I spent hours looking for the right place...one with good reviews, wanted space and privacy indoors and out. My family of 5 is so pleased that we selected MAP Ranch because it was perfect. Just as pictured and advertised, and just as other traveler's reviews stated. We loved how clean it was. Anita and Mike's hospitality was top notch. So many things are provided: paper towles, toilet paper, dishwasher detergent, hand soaps, shampoos, etc. And the outdoor setting was beautiful!. We spent hours on the covered porch. We have never found all these qualities anywhere else.

While there we went horseback riiding. Anita recommended Blue Bell Stables at Custer State Park. It was a great experience -- rode in the park, thru French Creek, and we even saw a buffalo. In the park, The Wilderness Loop and Needles Highway are a must. Went to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Go back to Mt. Rushmore for the nighttime lighting ceremony -- very moving. We went to a chuckwagon supper at Ft. Hays, just outside of Rapid City -- highly recommend it. And our teenagers loved the President's Tram and Slide in Keystone. A little pricey, but so much fun coming down the mountain on a slide. Found the Buglin' Bull in Custer to be a great restaurant. Our teens loved "hanging with the cows" at MAP Ranch.....and the marmets and deer.

Have no hesitations in staying a MAP Ranch -- it is a wonderful place to build memories. From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you Anita and Mike!

Whole Family Gives it 5 Stars!

Anita and Mike were the best hosts...they were attentive to all of our needs, but also gave us the space we needed on vacation. I asked if there was a blender available on our tour of the house on arrival, and Anita dropped one off the next day. It was nice to have all of the bed linens, towels, soap, laundry detergent stocked. The property was clean and we had plenty of room for two teenagers and two pre-schoolers. Our four year old loved the cows - a 4 day old one was there on arrival, and another born the morning we left. Our teenagers liked the porch and hammock for reading, but the 12-year old liked panning in the creek the best.

We loved the location. 2 minutes away from the entrance to Custer State Park which had several FREE activities for the family. We took a gold panning lesson (which is how we learned to look for garnets when we panned later), went fishing (park rangers provided the gear & grill), and took a canoe trip (park rangers provided the canoes and life jackets). We also took in the Grand Magic Show which all the kids liked. Other not to miss activities: Mount Rushmore, The Badlands, Jewel Cave tour. We saved Crazy Horse for last, and were pleased with the museum, bus tour, and dances.

Obviously, there was a lot left we never got to do--wish we could have seen the Mammoth Site and Bear Country, but we had great time. When the five-year old was asking if we could come back next year for two weeks, we knew it was a success!

I would recommend this property...showers were hot, ac/heat worked well (rarely had to use either) kitchen was nice and big. Liked all of the restaurants we visited, especially Cattleman's and the Pizza place (can't remember the name, but it was local) in Custer. Lots of cool shops in Custer but we were there before the tourist season really hit.

Thanks Anita and Mike for a great vacation! You were the best.

Owner's Response: Dear Lynn & Family, Thank you for letting us and others know that you had such a great time staying at MAP-Ranch. Putting the whole experience together to have a family vacation takes some pre-planning and you deserve the credit for that - we supplied the place! We're glad everyone has a good memory of the trip, where they stayed and what they did - including you! Don't wait too long to come again. Like we said - we love it here. Sincerely, Anita & Mike
