This is an A frame style dwelling located in the north east kingdom. This house has a 40 foot ceiling in the living area with a wall of glass windows that have a view of Jay peak and a private pond. This is a super private location on 30 acres of land near the Canadian Border. There is a private pond to swim in. Golf courses and larger lakes and ponds are a short drive away. Town is about 15 minutes by car. There are multiple golf courses and lakes in this area. This is a very private setting. Great local auction house, furniture, antiques, and collectables.
We had the best time ever. Lots to enjoy, the house was perfect for us and the owner was a call away and very helpful. We would love to stay here again on our next trip up. We enjoyed sitting on the porch , watching the beauty around us. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the quiet country. Lots of books and information for us on our surroundings. Very private and hidden, and just a short trip to town. Thank you so much for making our trip perfect.
The owner works hard to accommodate his guests and keep them happy. This A-frame is a bargain for what it offers: a swimming pond, excellent family gathering area in the great room, privacy in the loft bedroom with a queen-sized bed, more privacy in the attached bedroom with twin beds, and an excellent bathroom with spacious stall shower.
As is often the case in Vermont, the inside of this cottage exists so you can enjoy the outside day after pleasant day. Swim in the swimming pond, run with the kids or the dog on the lawn, and enjoy the sunrise and the sunset from the east-facing porch (suitable for family dining in the evening) and from the west-facing porch off the great room.
The cottage is all of 10 minutes from Exit 28, the exit for U.S. 5 between Derby Center and Newport. Shaw's and PriceChopper supermarkets are on U.S. 5 west of Exit 28; the excellent general store at Derby Center will give you many reasons to avoid the big chain groceries. Lake Memphremagog offers the best boating opportunities in Vermont outside of Lake Champlain, and it has a good bathing beach, too -- if the pond at the Derby Chalet suddenly fails to suit your needs. The Haskell Free Library and Opera House in Derby Line is an excellent local library and performance venue; it's all the better because it sits astride the international border, so you can check out a book in Canada and read it in the U.S., all without a passport. (Try that anywhere else along the border and you'll be in trouble!) A few miles to the south of the Derby Chalet is the stirring and beautiful rural Old Stone House Museum at Brownington Center, the home of The Rev. Alexander Lucius Twilight (1795-1857), born a free man in Vermont and the first African-American to graduate from a U.S. college or university (Middlebury College, 1823) as well as the first African-American elected to a state legislature (1836). Brownington is the site of his elegant dormitory built for the academy he ran there. Almost next door is the spectacular 360-degree view from the Brownington Observatory on Prospect Hill -- almost as good as the view from Jay Peak ... and no $10 tram ride! This is just a few miles from the Derby Chalet. Bring your passport and your French, and check out Bleu Lavande, a fabulous celebration of all things lavender, at Fitch Bay on Lake Memphremagog, five or so miles north of the border crossing at Derby Line or Beebe Plain.
Derby Chalet lacks a dishwasher and other fancy kitchen aids.
We stayed here a week and loved it. It has lots of room and is comfortable and clean. We had a small issue with the hot water heater and the owner responded very quickly and had it fixed the next morning. Newport, Derby and Derby Line are all nearby with many lakes and ponds in the area. I am an avid bike rider, quilter and knitter and there are bike paths and quilt and yarn shops in the area as well. Highly recommended and I would go again!
What a place.. We had a wonderful time. Very private and great location. Many acres for the dogs to run around with no worries. Just what we love. We will be back..
this is a very peaceful and relaxing cabin with a lot of space outside for the kids and Dogs to run and explore. The 2 decks are great you can find shade or sun on one or the other at almost any time of the day. This cabin is not fancy and is a great place to bring the kids. The 2 ponds are nice you can swim in both. The number of Stars at night are amazing and the fire flies are just starting to come out. There is WIFI but no cable, there is a tv with a dvd player so if you want to watch tv you need to bring your dvd's or go to Red Box. I think the house will sleep 6 and 7 if you have a little one that can sleep on the couch. I enjoyed my stay very much and plan on returning next year. If you want a peaceful and relaxing place the kids can run and be noisy and not bother a sole this is the place.
Other Activities: There is an area museum a short distance from the house
Golf: There are 4 golf courses located less than a 25 minute drive from the house, one of them is very cheap & great for kids.
