Located on the shores of Lake Erie, The Stop 141 Lake House is nestled among vintage cottages at Cottages at the Water's Edge in Vermilion, OH. This antique cottage-farmhouse began as a barn and was converted for occupancy in the late 1800's. It has since served as a country store and then family home for the current owners. This home has been in the current owners' family since 1953. This home has 2 bathrooms, a laundry room, full kitchen, living room, and four bedrooms accommodating a maximum of 8 people. It is on Lake Erie with a short walk across a grassy yard to the steps that go down to the 400 ft. sandy beach. (Please see the photos from the deck of the view of the walk from this house to the lake.) There is a beautiful deck outside with separate dining and seating areas. The deck is steps from the outdoor shower for washing off sand before returning to the house.
Dave and Therese Hoffman have owned and operated Cottages at the Water's Edge since 1985 and recently converted this home to a rental.
Therese Hoffman purchased this farmhouse in 1985
This home has a story! The Main House was a barn in the late 1800's. The farmhouse was moved down the road and the barn was converted to a house. During the depression, new owners opened a store in this house which was also one of the stops for the Lake Erie Electric Train that ran from Cleveland to Cedar Point to Toledo and other places. The owners, during the depression. served food from the store to the locals, as well as, homeless travelers along Lake Rd. or Rte. 6 today. The father of the family built the first cottage in the backyard by the lake for his daughter but she never used it as it quickly became a rental to earn more income. He built several more cottages over the years before they sold the property. The current owner's grandmother operated the business including the store from 1953 to 1963 and added an additional cottage. Another family member owned it from 1963 to 1985 but the store in this house was no longer in operation. It became the home of the owners and their office for the cottage business. The current owners have just converted it to a rental after living there for 30 years.
Lakefront with beach access is the main drawing factor plus close proximity to Cedar Point and other venues.
The city of Vermilion offers fine shops and many wonderful restaurants including the 4 star Chez Francois on the Vermilion River. Don't miss Brummer's Candy store. There is a wonderful public beach. For train enthusiasts, a platform at the crossing allows one to watch the many trains that go through town. Mill Hollow Bacon Woods Park offers picnicking along the River along with places to frolic in the water!
