About Heather St.Aubin-Stout

Gray Stout and Heather St. Aubin-Stout, owners and architects, live in Salisbury and enjoy boating and sailing on High Rock Lake with their family and friends.

Heather St.Aubin-Stout purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Heather St.Aubin-Stout chose High Rock Lake

We chose to build our lakefront vacation retreat at Mohican Shores at High Rock Lake because of the beauty and privacy of the site, the mountainous setting, the long range views of the lake and the deep, clean water. We also like that it is only 17 miles to Salisbury and 50 miles to Charlotte and Winston-Salem.

What makes this cottage unique

Incredible sunsets, swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. Mountain hikes. Building campfires and cooking out after a day on the water. Fun and fellowship with family and friends.

Great bones but rough around the edges

  • 3 of 5

Beautifully situated house with lovely views from every room . Privacy and dog friendly a big plus .

I also appreciated nice soaps and shampoos in the master bath room . However, this property could use some TLC . The first night I had to wash pots, pans and cooking utensils before I could cook - they were greasy and dirty. . No toaster. Counters and dining room table looked clean but also needed to be wiped down. The oven was quite dirty . As was the charcoal grill. In addition , bed linens were only provided for one bed (that bed had 4 pillows but only two pillowcases . Ewww.) My partner had a cold , we were surprised to have no sleeping option. We have stayed at several VRBO properties and always found them to be immaculate. This is a lovely house . I hope the owners will take their cleaning service to task - it was an uncomfortable stay for us .

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. I will go behind our cleaning crew (after I discuss this with them) and make sure all pots/pans and utensils are clean and ready for the next renter! I'm sorry you missed the toaster, it was in the cabinet to the right of the stove. As for extra linens, I wish you would have called or texted during your stay, I could have gotten you some. As per the contract, linens are left per person.

Wonderful after Labor Day Stay

  • 5 of 5

My extended family had a wonderful time at Windy Pointe. It was great being able to bring the family dogs too and walking them was not a problem as the location is quite private. We enjoyed using the kayak and canoe almost everyday. Nice that life jackets are provided as well. A charcoal grill was there and we grilled quite often. The beds were comfy and linens clean and in excellent condition. Great to gave a washer and dryer on hand when needed. As we cooked everyday, we would have liked a bit more in the way of kitchen paraphernalia, but we managed okay. The spiders were a bit alarming at first but we got used to them and worked around them. All in all, it was a wonderful vacation and everyone is talking about next year already!

High Rock vacation

  • 3 of 5

Beautiful location on the lake! Plenty of room for us. Kitchen well equipped; could use a larger cutting board. Previous reviews weren't messing around about the spiders! Nothing anyone can do about it. Just be prepared for BIG spiders. If I had to just say a few things that lead to my 3 star rating they would be: it might be a great idea to have a local TV listing; it would be helpful for a listing of some local restaurants (La Cava in Salisbury was AWESOME!!!); closest supermarket, etc. The house is very remote so local store/restaurant info would have been great. It would have been nice to have more than 2 bath towels for us to have for the week. While it was just the 2 of us, I don't know what we would have done if we had more people joining us (we were given one set of sheets as well. That was ok but again would have had problems if there were more than just us). We wanted to rent a boat or jet skis; the guy at Tamarac marina said there was no such thing available? Maybe think about having some info about where these items could be rented would be a good idea.

This is a lovely property and would be good for families, boaters, fisher-people. A few more details would have made it perfect for us.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. Will get a larger cutting board for the kitchen and will put together a book of places to visit in the area (a travelers guide). As for the spiders-this is frustrating to us as well, this fall with a break in the rentals, we are going to thin out the woods and mulch the area surrounding the house, hoping this will help. As for the sheets and towels, that is stated in the policy, but there is a washer & dryer. Thanks again for staying at Windy Pointe!

Gorgeous house

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and situated on a really excellent part of the lake - we had a great time. We rented a boat for a couple of days, which we enjoyed. Fishing from the dock was nice - caught plenty of catfish but unfortunately no bass. We used the canoe, kayak, charcoal grill, and fire pit a lot - those amenities were much appreciated. Everything was clean and maintained well; the sheets and towels were very good quality, and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cookware. One minor detail - the can opener was broken when we got there and may need to be replaced

All in all, it was a great stay. Thanks, Heather, for being so helpful and communicative!

Memorial Day Weekend

  • 5 of 5

6 of us stayed for the weekend and we had an amazing time! The views from the bedrooms are unbelievably beautiful, the deck facing the water was where we enjoyed dinner and the lake view every night. The house is adequately stocked with all of the essentials you could need to grill out or cook in the kitchen. Our dogs loved jumping off the dock into the water and the humans loved hitching a tube to the dock and enjoying the sun!

The property was very clean and the owners description accurate. Heather was so nice and answered all of my questions promptly.

We are looking forward to coming back in the future!

Labor Day

  • 5 of 5

Our family and two dogs spent four relaxing days at this great spot and will certainly re-book. It was a wonderful getaway and Heather was quite helpful in providing information at all times. It was so helpful to find a rental which would allow dogs. Boat and jet ski rentals are available locally and quality varies with marinas.
