My family of 4 generations - 8 adults and 6 children (all under age 6) had plenty of room. BUT - We had 9 towels and 3 wash cloths upon our arrival. I spent $40 on 4 beach towels our 1st night. The agent did bring more towels and unlocked the linen closet that held the beach towels the next day. Otherwise the house was well furnished. But we were led to believe that the 300ft of beach meant you could actually get to the water! There was a good 30 ft of MUCK between the "beach" and the lake!!! The agent told my mother (when he brought the towels) that they tell folks this can sometimes be the case. FALSE!!!! The neighbor said the lake was down 4 feet and that they hadn't had a usable beach in years. The agent further told my Mom that there were public beaches 1 mile & 12 miles away. That was TRUE - but packing up 6 little ones, 2 seniors, lunch and beach paraphernalia daily and cutting beach time in half to accommodate naps was not the relaxing week at a beachfront cottage we all envisioned! After swallowing that disappointment the first day, we still had to deal with the fact that there was NO AIR CONDITIONING and it was 90 degrees the first 3 days! Thank goodness the temps went down and we could at least sleep. We found out you CANNOT leave a window open in any room with a light on over night or the room will be FULL of BUGS the next morning. Bugs & spider webs were everywhere - especially windows & doors! A monthly powerwash and some bug spray would go a long way!!!! The topper on this week was that we RAN OUT OF WATER on Thurs night!!!!! Of course we were in the middle of running the dishwasher and preparing dinner when it ran out! We were told it wasn't possible that we had run out! We invited the agent to check for himself - then we were told we wouldn't have water until morning. No clean bottles, kids needing baths, 3 sinks full of dirty dishes and we would have to wait until morning. Then the agent asked us to offer a solution!!! I DON'T THINK SO!!!!! He found someone to bring water!!!! My husband spent an hour figuring out how to reset the pumps to actually get the water running. Oh yeah - one other major inconvenience was the very inadequate apartment sized washer & dryer that took forever to dry clothes!!! OVERPRICED FOR THE LACK OF BEACH & AIR CONDITIONING, OVERABUNDANCE OF BUGS AND QUESTIONABLE WATER SUPPLY AND LAUNDRY ACCOMODATIONS!!!!
Owner's Response: This family experienced a Michigan adventure, unfortunately many of the adversities that come with a lakefront rental.
There's no doubt that this family was gracious under the circumstances. Mother Nature, being as unpredictable as she is, provided the muck, the bugs, spiders, and the uncharacteristic heat that comes with a vacation home along Lake Huron. The muck was a result of calm waters and excessive heat that are not usually associated with Lake Huron. Bugs and spiders are a natural inconvenience for most of us living on the Lake.
And being right on the Lake, there are not many times that we have such temperatures as we had this past month, especially the week that this family experienced.
New towels had been ordered, but unfortunately not delivered by the time this family arrived. As soon as we learned of the towel shortage the broker himself drove up with personal towels, the best that we could do at the time to keep the inconvenience to a minimum.
The water issue, thanks to the understanding of this family, has been addressed and steps have been taken to provide better communication with the occupants on what to do when, or if, the water tanks malfunction again.
Also, for those considering our spacious home for their future vacationing, know that we are available for your inquiries.
