About BJ

My husband and I lived and worked in Atlanta for most of our lives, but we LOVE the mountains. Ever since we met we have been going to the mountains to vacation as often as we can. As our family grew, we found the mountains to be the perfect place to hike as a family and enjoy each other’s company as we discovered special places for picnics as a family. They will always love the mountains and all the hidden treasures of beauty, serenity, and just the AWE of God’s magnificent creation. So there has never been any question as to where we want to retire. So my husband built Smoky Cove Cabin. We hope you’ll enjoy all that the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer. You’ll want to keep coming back too!!

BJ purchased this cabin in 2008

Why BJ chose Whittier

We chose this quaint gated community in Whittier, NC because it is centrally located to ALL of the Great Smoky Mountain region. Drive less than 30 minutes and you can have a picnic in Cades Cove as you watch the elk feed. Or drive less than an hour and spend hours looking at the spectacular Biltmore House and Gardens. Within 15 minutes my husband can play on one of the finest golf courses in the country.

Of all the family vacations we’ve taken over the years, we have the fondest memories of our days hiking and discovering the Smoky Mountains.

More than anything, we love the seasons and the fact that each season is mild.

Occasional winter snows are wonderful. Just put on some soup and sit by the fire as the mountains turn snow white.

Spring truly is glorious. Greening of the mountains is a site that is just too beautiful to describe. The creeks and rivers swell as he fisherman and motorcycles flock to the area.

Summer is mild. Days are warm, nights are cool. All you desire for Summer living.

Fall; The glorious Fall; So beautiful!! You just cannot get enough of this.

Location, Location, Location!!!! ……………….For the Soul!!

We Loved This Cabin For A Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the fortune of a free weekend with the kids at her mother's home. We looked for a cabin in proximity and this was about an hour from her in Asheville. We wanted a nice cabin to just relax. Other renters have mentioned lack of amenities in the immediate area which was true, but we knew that and were quite okay with it.

Yes the driveway was steep, but her 4X4 Toyota Highlander made it without a problem, no snow or ice present of course. We even drove to the top of the neighborhood. You must see the house being built that has a horse barn, to die for views.

As for the house itself, I couldn't have been more pleased. It was tastefully decorated with sheetrock walls and heavy wood accents. True log cabins are too rustic for my wife. The open concept living/dining and kitchen areas are immaculate and feed right onto the large front porch. The numerous glassed doors allow easy access from living areas to the porch which has nice patio furniture. Don't forget the Weber grill, we cooked steaks our last night there. The front porch views were perfectly adequate for us. Not expansive, but taking out just a few trees at the top of the driveway would make it even better.

The kitchen is nicely appointed. My wife immediately noticed the soft close drawers. The granite covered island facing the front of the home was a very nice touch. The very large fireplace and mantle is great with a roaring fire. The dining area has a 4 person bar height table which was comfortable.

The Master Suite is large with a king bed, as well as a large master bath with private water closet, dual sinks and large walk-in-closet. This is where we saw the wasps?, they were real although no one was stung. We killed 10 in total, almost all in the bathroomm. The master opens onto the rear porch which has a nice jacuzzi tub which we loved.

We didn't use the upper area but it did have the single bed in the loft and a nice second bedroom with private bath.

The internet wasn't working during our visit, I wonder if my wife paid extra for that ;)

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and have already recommended it to friends. If you want Dollywood down the street, look elsewhere. If you want a nice home to relax and enjoy the home you couldn't ask for more.

Cabin nice but...

  • 3 of 5

Lets start by saying the cabin itself is very nice, no issues with the actual cabin. What was disappointing is the view (or lack of) from the hot tub and also from the front porch. Probably in fall once the leaves have fallen you may get a nice view of the mountains, just not before then. If you are looking to visit the smoky mountains and want to be as far away from Gatlinburg and all it has to offer, this is the place. There is very little to do on the N.C. side of the park. What should be noted in the Cabin description is how hard it is to access it in anything but a 4x4 or all wheel drive. (no snow or ice was to blame here) Our trip started with our frt wheel drive vehicle getting stuck attempting to go up the approx. 150 ft long, 45 degree gravel/dirt incline with a 90 degree turn half way up. Our 2nd day there (by accident) we found the only way to get the car up was in reverse and not stopping. Another issue we ran across was the yellow jacket nests under the stairs the hot tub sits on. My wife was stung twice the first day we arrived (not long after getting the car unstuck in the driveway, great start to a vacation) In the end we cut our vacation in the cabin short and decided to stay on the Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge side as there were far more activities to do there. Bottom line, the cabin itself was very nice but accessing it and tourist attractions around it, not so great.

Owner's Response: Smoky Cove is a VERY private and secluded setting that is accessed by a gravel drive of about 150 feet. Each traveler is clearly notified of this in the Rental Agreement which states in bold print that AWD or 4WD is recommended. All travelers are given an email and telephone number to call in case of situations such as the bees or any condition which may affect a stay. The area for Smoky Cove is ideal for the great outdoors. Not much shopping such as Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. Small towns within 4-15 miles of the cabin offer so much for shoppers with excellent dining. The area has great golf, spectacular hiking trails, water rafting, and some of the best outdoor adventure available. Great Smoky Mountain National Park is less than 8 miles from the cabin and is rated the # 1 most visited park in our country. Free Fun such as the spectacular display of the Blue Ridge Parkway (10 minutes away) is unsurpassed with beauty of views, trees , and wildlife. Most travelers find Smoky Cove ideal for a peaceful mountain get away no matter the time year. Each season offers up it's own Magic.

Amazing Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned home from our stay in North Carolina. We stayed 3 nights at Smoky Cove and the cabin was truly spectacular. Stunning inside and out and in a beautiful and private location. Beverly had arranged for a high chair and pack and play for us and the cabin had everything else we needed. We just wish we could have stayed longer. We enjoyed the front porch and back jacuzzi every night after sightseeing around the area. It was cozy, comfortable and was a vacation to remember. We would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing and beautiful cabin stay near the Great Smoky Mountains.

Beautiful home in a perfect setting

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Smoky Cove with our three children (8, 7 and 5 years old) for a week after the 4th of July holiday. Everything was exactly as had hoped it would be and then some. The home is a very roomy and comfortable timber frame with exposed log balconied loft overlooking the first floor with a beautiful view of the mountains. It was well furnished with newer furnishings and had a very liveable and nice layout. There are two large bedrooms with one located on each floor. The attached bathrooms were very well appointed and stocked with very plush towels. The location was exactly what we hoped for. It was situated away from any neighbors so that we were not able to see anyone, not even lights of the neighboring homes. We enjoyed every morning and evening on the front deck where we sipped morning coffee and evening beverages. We could not have asked for a more perfect location to spend a vacation with the childrens first trip to the mountains. We had no difficulty navigating the drive with our Toyota 4 Runner eventhough it rained heavily several days during our stay. The home is located a short drive from Cherokee and Bryson City. We visited Great Smoky Mountain National Park nearly everyday of our trip and it was an easy drive. Beverly was very helpful in providing excellent suggestions for our trip. We highly recommend this beautiful home to anyone looking to get away from it all, but yet being close enough to be in reach of civilization if the need arises. The home is a perfect get away.
