Gene Parsons has a wide variety of skills which he puts to good use operating his current business as well as maintaining the StringBender Cottage property. Moving to Caspar in 1970, Gene teamed up with local friends and carpenters to build his custom machine shop, his own home and the cottage. As far back as the late 60’s and into the late 80’s, Gene had a full-time career as a musician and recording artist. As a multi-talented singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, he toured with such bands as the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. His talents were also used in the recording studio with such greats as Randy Newman, Arlo Guthrie, The Everly Brothers and The Rolling Stones. Currently Gene is happiest working in his custom shop where he manufactures and installs the StringBender mechanism in client guitars as well as other artistic projects. One of those pet projects is the building of a 1/8th scale, real live steam locomotive, part by part!
Star Decker is a native of Mendocino County with strong roots in local culture and history. Raised on ranches she has trained horses, gardened, landscaped and run family businesses. An adventurer, she has traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe sometimes by herself or accompanied by her horse and dog. Other interests include; community volunteer work, playing music, reading and various art projects. Today she is happiest at home creating the beautiful garden and landscape of the property and providing a lovely and warm atmosphere for the guests at StringBender Cottage. Both Gene and Star have a long history in the local coastal areas as well as the county. They are always willing to share their 'insider' knowledge and stories with guests.
The Owner purchased this house in 1975
We chose to live here for the ocean, the weather and a small, rural community with a LOT of culture, art, music, events, good restaurants, and so much more.
The forest setting, wildlife such as deer, fox and wild turkeys, beautiful organic garden, excellent hiking/biking/horseback riding trails, interesting owners that honor and respect privacy.
Hi Star~ The cottage was amazing. We definitely enjoyed our stay in Caspar. We did the waterfall hike at Russian Gulch and we got to walk around Fort Bragg and downtown Mendocino. We'd definitely like to come back and stay someday. Thanks again for coordinating and making our stay smooth and comfortable. Take care.
Star and Gene have created a home away from home. Cozy and inviting, just what we needed for our escape vacation. Beautiful landscaped yard and a wonderful deck to sit and take in the surrounding forest and fresh air. Lots of extras to make the visit special. We will definitely be back to the area and plan on staying here again.
We LOVE this magical cottage by the sea in Caspar! Everything about the area, the grounds, the cottage is immaculately maintained. The cottage shows pride of ownership in every detail. Star and Gene have thought of every amenity from the linens to the towels to the library from which they even allow you to take home a book from their diverse selection! We love the area because you are close to restaurants, the ocean, hiking trails, all within a five minute drive. This is truly a very special cottage owned by two very special people! A must stay! We will return to this peaceful retreat.
This place is special. Its is a perfect getaway for 2 people. Your hosts, Star and Gene are the kindest people you will ever meet! The cottage is very well kept and decorated. It has a nice old acoustic guitar and other instruments which we enjoyed. The landscape surrounding the cottage is thick, diverse, and very well maintained. The cottage is surrounded with beautiful trees, flowers, and thick forest. You feel as if you are being hugged by the forest when you are there. It is about 1 mile from a beautiful beach on the pacific coast which we had all to ourselves! The most secret and special thing about this cottage is your hosts. Gene and Star have made an amazing place that they have created together to share with their visitors. Gene Parsons played with the Byrds from 1968 - 1972 and he invented the Stringbender or B-Bender guitar. This instrument is featured on classic songs such as "Peaceful Easy Feeling" by the Eagles, "Coming into Los Angeles" by Arlo Guthrie, "Box of Rain" by the Dead and "All of my Love" by Led Zepplin. Gene still makes these guitars at his custom shop on the property where you will stay. If you are so interested, a tour of the shop can be arranged with Gene Parsons himself! This is a very special and unique opportunity to meet a musical legend and a highly skilled inventor and craftsman. It was an amazing opportunity to hear his stories and see his creations. Being a fan of 60's and 70's music I feel a closer connection to much of the music that Gene has played a part in. This is one of the most memorable places we have ever stayed. We highly recommend you to experience this unique and magical place.
The cottage was very comfortable, had everything we needed. Very well furnished and decorated. We enjoyed the movies, music and books. Bar B Q with charcoal etc. were a nice touch --and we enjoyed our delicious steaks!
We enjoyed taking walks in the forest. Our 2 night stay was just what we needed--quiet and peaceful
This cottage is everything that is advertised - and more! Furnished with exquisite good taste. We had a wonderful time in and around Mendocino which is only a short drive from Casper.
The cottage was beautiful, very comfortable, and in a beautiful spot. Definitely my favorite place in the Mendocino area. It had everything I needed and more. I hope it's available whenever I'm in the area.
