PICTURESQUE TWO-STORY APARTMENT IN HISTORIC HOUSE WALKING DISTANCE FROM FERRY

Staten Island Apartment Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 5-6

Step into another world in this duplex apartment on the top two floors of a140 year-old hilltop Victorian home. Relax in the evening with the lights from the bay and the Verrazano Bridge outside the window. Yet you are just a 20 minute downhill walk to the Staten Island Ferry, the greatest free ride in the world. The house is surrounded by a lush, terraced garden with tree swing and tree house. Descend from our secluded hilltop into downtown Staten Island, a diverse, up-and-coming real New York neighborhood with a convenient strip of restaurants and small shops.

If you have the spirit of romantic adventure and hate overpriced hotel rooms, we can make your New York stay even more special, and affordable.

The Ferry to Manhattan: The Staten Island Ferry is by far the loveliest way to enter Manhattan, a 25-minute cruise across the harbor. You pass very close to the Statue of Liberty and watch the skyscrapers grow enormous as you approach. The boat runs 24/7, usually every half hour. It runs more often in rush hours, hourly very late at night. And it's FREE.

The walk to the Ferry from our house is an easy downhill stroll. Coming back you may prefer to hop a bus 2-3 stops, or a cab for $5-7.

Staten Island: If you stay more than a few days, you may want to see the sights of Staten Island itself, New York's 'forgotten borough.' These include Snug Harbor, a 19th-century sailors' retirement home turned museum and cultural center, the Jacques Marchais Tibetan Art Museum, and the Alice Austen museum, a beautiful waterfront house devoted to a pioneering woman photographer. The south shore of Staten Island offers many miles of sandy beach and boardwalk if you want to take a few hours off from being a tourist. The island is famous for its Italian food, but newer immigrant groups are making their contributions as well. You will find the prices for restaurants, like lodging, far more reasonable than in Manhattan.

NOT GOOD

  • 1 of 5
The home was in bad condition. The landing at the bottom of the steps were cracked and ready to break. The furnishings in the living room and kitchen were sparse and in poor condition. There were no screens in the the upstairs bedrooms, it was a warm evening so would been nice to have the windows open. It's stated there were towels and wash clothes, but they were sparse. The painting was poorly done not covered very well and should've been touched up. It looked like they painted right over the dirt on the woodwork. We do not live in a home like this, so not what we expected for our vacation. The floors were dirty, the lighting was poor in the kitchen, we had trouble locking the front doors after we were inside. The treehouse and swing were in bad condition. The description did not fit it all what we found. It could be a really nice place, if they did some updating and cleaned it better.

Owner's Response: We do appreciate feedback. Much of the criticism here is constructive, and we have begun to address it. We just spruced up the kitchen with a new (old) set of oak chairs, put in a brighter light, and moved a few of the old chairs into the living room for extra sitting capacity. We put in new lamps in the living room and two of the upstairs bedrooms to brighten things up in general. It's hard to fit screens on those old casement windows upstairs, but we have ordered them.

As for towels, we generally keep plenty on hand, but may have been short this time with so much laundry coming and going during the busy season. If you lack anything during your stay, you can just call us. We live a few minutes away and are happy to help.

NICE, CLEAN, COMFORTABLE. AND A VIEW!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time staying here! Though most of our time was spent sight-seeing it was a great place to come "home" to each day. As many have already mentioned the walk up is not for the faint of heart but my family and I found it well worth it! Craig and Elena were easy to contact and provided lots of local info. I would definitely stay here again! It's out of the way yet convenient to the city. We even walked to times square from the Ferry!

PICTURESQUE, PLEASANT , AND PROFESSIONAL

  • 5 of 5
The property truly was picturesque and exactly as described. More importantly, the owner was was very pleasant and professional, and easy to reach before my arrival. He answered all my questions, sent me succinct documents describing how to access the property, and included information on local services and eateries. While I only used the property for one day, I can easily see a family using this as a comfortable, affordable week-long "home base" for an exploring New York City holiday.

AWESOME PLACE IN STATEN ISLAND

  • 5 of 5
Very clean, quiet and cozy place. The house is situated on Staten Island, 15 minutes walk from ferry. The apartment is huge, can easily accommodate 6-7 people. From one of the bedrooms there is a beautiful view over Verrazano–Narrows Bridge. Craig and Helena are very good hosts, they were very helpful and nice.
Thank you again! It was a very pleasant stay!

RECOMMENDED-4.5 STARS

  • 4 of 5
The decription is accurate.Great start to the day walking down to the ferry and yes the last streatch back to the house is steep however we only took a cab on arrival with our luggage. The view across to the Verrazano Narrows bridge is awesome. We felt safe walking back from a local restaurant on Victory Bld at 9:30 pm. Very pleased we chose this as our base. No disturbances at night. Elena and Craig were very helpful

A LOT OF STAIRS BUT GREAT PLACE.

  • 4 of 5
I was disappointed at first because the walk up the stairs and the window units had been removed. I mentioned it to Elena and told me the ACs' were in the closet. I could wait for someone to install them or I could. There were tools there so I did it myself. One of the other issues was that there was only one fork and no knives. We cooked a steak dinner and used spoons and butter knives. It was fun. Spoke to Elena about it as well. She apologized and old us she would get some. We said, just get them for the next renter.

The walk back from the ferry can be a doozy if you have been in NYC all day. $6 cab ride quickly fixes that.

Overall it was a great place if you don't mind stairs. It just the style of house in Staten Island. Big, roomy and staten island feel all the way. Loved it.

I would totally stay here again.

Owner's Response: Actually all the cutlery was in another drawer where these guys didn't look for some reason. It sounds like no harm done, though. We'll stock up for your next visit
