We offer a spacious, and unique home on the beach with three separate en suite guest bedrooms. Two bedrooms have a king size bed, the third one has two twin beds with canopy. They all are tucked away for privacy. Each has its own bathroom and deck or patio and enjoys a full view of the Caribbean. Situated on over 80 feet (25 meters) of quiet beachfront with hammocks swinging from the palapa. It is the ideal location to relax, snorkel, or explore the Riviera Maya.

Located an hour and a half south of Cancun, minutes from Tulum, Tankah Bay is a small paradise. Our private access beach road has 24-hour security. Quiet and very safe while amenities are easily accessible on foot or in a ten-minute car ride.

We designed a house where everyone can enjoy the spacious common areas and yet retire to their room for complete privacy. Each bedroom has ample closet space, a safe and a high quality Hunter fan.

As you enter the house you are stunned by the view of the Caribbean and the expansive ground floor.

You will take in the dramatic, circular living room with custom designed palapa (thatched) roof. A series of French doors open to the beach, yet the living room retains privacy. To the left is the light-filled dining room, with large French doors, which extends outside to a furnished patio.

Conveniently, the well-equipped kitchen is directly adjacent to the living room, making entertaining a delight. It features black granite counter tops, All-Clad cookware and all major appliances. A central island is the perfect place for a quick snack or to gather cooks and guests. From the kitchen you may look out to the water or turn around and face the luxurious garden.

On the opposite side is the beach level master suite, with a king size bed, private bathroom and a deep blue tiled shower. A sliding door connects this shower to a protected outside shower. The room’s French doors open to a patio with a hanging hammock and lounge chairs.

As you wind up the circular stairway you reach the wide-open second floor landing with an interior balcony overlooking the living room. On each side is a bedroom. The master suite has a king size bed, a private furnished shaded deck, a private bathroom with two sinks and a white and green tiled garden shower with local plants.

The other bedroom has two canopied twin size beds, a private furnished shaded deck, and a turquoise tiled bathroom. Each bedroom has ample closet space, a safe and a high quality Hunter fan.

The second floor stairway takes you to the roof where you can enjoy views of Tankah Bay, the jungle, or you can watch the ospreys and pelicans dive. You may also enjoy the sunset with a Margarita in hand or make it your private sunbathing area.

On the garden side of the house is a palapa covered outside kitchen with a wood table, gas barbecue, sink and counter space. You will have easy access from the kitchen door. It is an ideal place to cook any time of day.

Villa Mariposa is tastefully decorated with local artifacts, well maintained, and in excellent condition. All the woodwork (furniture, windows, doors, closets etc.) in the house is handcrafted of mahogany, giving the house a warm comfortable yet sophisticated atmosphere. Throughout the house the floor is “conchuela”, a 42 million years old fossil stone from the Yucatan. We carefully designed the house to provide views, natural ventilation, privacy and large living areas. From any room – even your shower! - You can enjoy the changing shades of the Caribbean.

From the white sand beach just footsteps away you may swim, snorkel, or take the two kayaks on the bay. You will love sunbathing in hammocks and lounge chairs, or enjoy the ocean view sitting under the shady beach palapa.

Our caretakers, Luis and Nery, live on site in a separate home on the property. They provide five day a week maid and gardening service. They can prepare delicious Mexican meals for an additional fee.

The villa is located between Akumal and Tulum, offering the convenience of shops and entertainment while staying on a quiet secluded and safe beach. We are steps away from 2 restaurants and swimming at the magical Manatee Cenote (swimming hole).

We are only a 10-minute drive to restaurants, shops, Tulum ruins, and other gorgeous beaches (Sian Kaan). Coba ruins are a 45 minute drive, Valladolid, a small colonial town, is a wonderful day trip and famous Chichen Itza is a 3 hour excursion. The region is renowned for its fly-fishing opportunities. We have spotted bonefish in our own bay!

Villa Mariposa is a quiet, peaceful sanctuary surrounded by extraordinary beauty where you will have an easy and relaxing tropical vacation.

About Veronique Fourment

We are a bilingual, bi-cultural family who loves to come back to Tankah. Our first child started coming here when she was 2 years old, the youngest one made her first trip at 10 months! Now in College our daughter keeps coming back to this quiet paradise. They both learned scuba diving in our Bay. We live in San Francisco and we come to Villa Mariposa as often as possible. We love to share our home with friends and family. It has a magical effect on our souls and brings our family together.

Veronique Fourment purchased this villa in 1998

Why Veronique Fourment chose Tankah

After coming back year after year to the Riviera Maya, we purchased the land in 1998. We spent time studying the climate and the location. In 2001 we built a home where materials were sourced locally. The house is perfectly adapted to the land and climate. Every aspect of the house has been carefully thought through. We take pride in its original design and unexpected features.

What makes this villa unique

We love the peace, surrounding natural beauty and the people. The water is warm, the snorkeling wonderful and the birds put on a show every day. For our daily exercise, we go swimming in Manate Cenote - a fresh water inlet-. Early morning, you'll have it to yourself and see the tiny needle fish, wild orchids, crabs etc.. Later in the afternoon you can watch the birds returning for the night and listen to their calls. You can take the kids on a kayak in the Bay or on the cenote. Children can play safely on the beach or at the water's edge. When you've had enough relaxing you can go explore the ruins, other beaches and even go on an inland day trip. There is always something or nothing to do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at Villa Mariposa. It is a fabulous property in a fabulous location. The flat water of Tankah Bay was great for kayaking and snorkeling. We kayaked four or five times, and snorkeled at various locations within the Bay, including the outflow area from the Cenote. Hanging out in beach palapa and hammocks was totally relaxing as well.

Location was about 100 meters from the lovely Cenote, and we dined at both the Blue Sky and Casa Cenote restaurants a few times, generally for breakfast on our way out, but also for dinner once each. Both were great.

The location of the villa, just a few minutes to the city of Tulum, was also great. We went several times...Amy is a professional chef and part of her vacation protocol is always to shop for, purchase, and prepare seafood and quality produce.... mission accomplished. Very fun.

Using the villa as our base of operations, we drove back up to Playa del Carmen (not a great experience as we are not big shopping freaks). Akumal beach (ok, but too crowded after our languid hours at the Villa), Tulum, and Coba. Both these last two were interesting for me since I am a retired archaeologist for the US NPS and have been on a couple of international teams working with the Mexican institute of archaeology (INAH) and the government of Belize.

Although the decorative elements of the villa were great, I was particularly enchanted by the Mayan glyphs hanging on the wall near the powder room, and looked all over for somewhere to purchase something like them...without success, until the drive to Coba where we found them en route them and purchased several to bring home after he showed me some illustrated classical Mayan archaeology texts.

Returning from our travelling experiences to the villa has an elegant design, has plenty of room, and is well decorated. Airflow negated the need for air conditioning. Setting was very secure with the gate guards, and the in-bedroom safes worked great. Being steps from the beach was a real plus.

Luis and Nery did a great job meeting our needs, reliable, efficient, friendly, and they tended to be low profile although we were often around much of the morning. They also cooked for us one was very good.

We had a great time and would highly recommend Villa Mariposa to anyone seeking a place to stay in the Tulum area. We would definitely stay there again since it has so much to offer. You should be very proud of such a lovely home

Perfect piece of paradise. Ali

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing stay at Villa Mariposa. It was everything and more we could have asked for. The care taker Luis and his wife Nery had the home ready and where there to greet us with a big smile despite our late arrival. During our stay they where very professional and not intrusive at all, pleasure to chat too.

We asked Nery and Luis to prepare a meal for us and it was well worth it, tasty and lovely presentation, flowers and all.

The home is clean and well kept, met and exceeded our needs, spacious rooms with private bathrooms. Having a small safe in the room made it easy to leave valuables and not worry.

We where able to cook out own meals and every thing we neede was there from bottle openers to cooler bag.

Location was great for us ( you do need transport to get to Tulum) however there are taxis at the end of the road if you so choose.

You step out on to your own little piece of paradise, beach and palapa with hammocks just perfect. They bay is calm and safe and snorkelling was great. There is a lot of coral so water shoes may be helpful. We snorkeled in the cenote and it was safe and definatly an experience. It does get pretty busy so either early in mornig or later in the day.

Veroniques detailed list of place to shop and eat was great help as well as the Retornos (turn around as there are no overpasses) much excitement.

Roger the maanger was great help to locat fishing spots and local areas of interest. We were able to visit the ruins of Telum and fit in some shopping as well.

It truely was a little bit of heaven and we certainly hope to return to Mariposa and Thankah and will recommend this to friends.

Thank you for sharing your home with us and making the stay so special will many little details.

Beautiful setting, Relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to Tankah Bay and it's pretty hard to beat our first stay. This was definitely comparable. The house was beautiful, clean, spacious and perfect for what we wanted. The caretakers were absolutely wonderful and very accommodating for our needs. I recommend taking advantage of their cooking skills, it will add to your relaxing experience and the food was excellent. Everyday you can stroll on the beach, take a swim, snorkel and kayak. Everything is right there, almost no need to leave the property. Within walking distance you have the Manatee Cenote, I highly recommend, just go early because it can get busy. Also, within walking distance, you have two bar/restaurants. My favorite part of the day was relaxing under the palapa, right on water, watching the birds hunt and dive. The beach side of the villa also offers privacy with a patio and lounging areas sheltered by hedges. I'd like to give a special thank-you to the property manager who provided us with fresh eggs from a local farm when the grocery store ran out of them just before Christmas. The Tulum ruins are a must see, as well as the Coba ruins. If you are adventurous, you can climb largest ruin in Coba and get an amazing view of the jungle. I could go on and on about how amazing this place is, but, you'll have to find out for yourselves! We will definitely be back and highly recommend this stunning villa. A much needed escape from the gray and cold of winter.

Owner's Response: Thank you Laura! So glad your stay was everything you were looking for. Luis and Nery's cooking is really a treat! The farm eggs are amazing, I have a hard time eating anything else when back in SF, even the organic eggs don't compare.

Vacation of a Lifetime

  • 5 of 5

This vacation to Villa Mariposa was a reward to myself and my wife for a very challenging year which I had a tough battle with cancer. We could not have asked for a better vacation. My brother and sister in law went with us, and we all had a great time. The propery was very spacious and very well kept by the caretaker family that live in a separate home on the property. They did anything that you asked of them, including arranging in home massages, and are excellent cooks, if you want them to prepare a meal for you. My only advise if you want a meal is to come Hungary. The fee for the meal is minimal, and they will also do the shopping for the food. There is a menu at the Villa for any meal that you desire. The home is beautifully decorated, and the beach area is amazing for treasure hunting. I can't say enough about the Villa, just try it, you will Love it!

Perfect Vacation Villa and an Incredible Value

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week-plus stay and I write this review to confirm it is everything described in the listing and so much more. The Villa is certainly clean, well-maintained and the Veronique, the owner, provides guests with all the information needed to make this not only a stress free rental but offered us specific advice that allowed us to tailor our stay to our preferences.

Our party was two adults and two teenagers with a preference to relax and hang out in a comfortable place. Once we stocked up on groceries at the local supermarket we found little reason to run around the Yucatan, we were already enjoying a huge property with 3 beds, 4 baths, very solid wifi, multiple hammocks, a private Palapa, a massive common area with tons of seating and loungers only steps from the white sand beach and calm waters protected by the world's second largest barrier reef.

So many things are just right about this place, a few examples: the beds all face the ocean (small but important detail), massive windows for views to no end, outdoor shower for fast transitions, two sea kayaks for your unlimited and private use, outdoor gas BBQ to grill pungent food, windows in showers, tons of natural woods and stones which make the property feel tranquil and moderate the temps, lovely landscaping...the list goes on.

I would recommend this property because the fact is we got excellent value and the property and effort put forth by the owner and the caretakers merit a thriving business. Just don't book it when I want to return, deal?

Obviously when you book something like this from the states you naturally worry to varying degrees that something might go wrong or that you must investigate the rental in due diligence to make sure you don't arrive to find an empty lot or a locked door. The main thing I can offer you in this review is that will not happen, the place is legitimate, well-managed and its everything we wanted to enjoy a large comfortable Villa in a really interesting area.

Perfect stay in beautiful beach house

  • 5 of 5

The house was even nicer than on the photos. Everything is perfectly organised for a convenient stay (kitchen, kayaks, hamacs, barbecue,...) and the house is well-maintained (daily).

The bathroom of the main bedroom is excellent ! It makes you feel you are in a cascade in the forest :-)

The view on the lagoon and on the forest on the other side (which seems a green sea) are amazing. You can't miss it at sunrise and sunset !

The location is perfect to visit a lot of places: Tanka Bay itself is nice for snorkling (lots of coloured fishes), a cenote at 5 minutes walk distance, beaches with turtles and other coloured fishes (Akumal,...), beaches for kite surfing, archeological sites...

Relaxing Vacation in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent my birthday week at Villa Mariposa with a few friends at the beginning of May. The house itself is absolutely perfect. As you can see from the pictures, the backside of the house is a wall of windows. The windows all have the ability to open (and are screened) and bring in an incredible breeze with magical ocean sounds. Lounging both in the house and on the beach (just a few steps away from the house) set the tone for an incredibly relaxing trip.

The beds and linens were very comfortable, the house was very clean (and stayed clean throughout the week with the help of the house keeper that comes in once a day), and the kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, blender, etc. for those that want to do some of their own cooking.

The house is located about 10 minutes (driving) from Tulum Pueblo, 15 minutes from Tulum Beach and about 15 minutes from Akumal.

There is a refreshing and pristine cenote located about two minutes walking distance from the house. There is a small fee to swim in the cenote, but it is completely worth it. The water is crisp and beautiful.

There is a pizza place and another small restaurant located within walking distance from the house, but other than that you'll need to travel by car to get to restaurants, grocery stores and other attractions. (And I wouldn't recommend traveling by cab. We made that mistake once and had a cab driver charge us $75 USD to travel to the grocery store in Tulum Pueblo and back.)

We very much enjoyed our stay at Villa Mariposa and would definitely recommend it to both friends and family.

Owner's Response: Amelia, Thanks for the nice comments about the house !! I am glad you mentioned the taxi. Not all taxis will gauge tourists but it is a lot easier to rent a car while you're staying at Villa Mariposa. Driving in the Yucatan is lot easier than it was, roads have improved greatly and the police is a lot more reasonable than just a few years ago.
