Off The Reef has Amazing Snorkeling and a Spectacular View with miles and miles of beach to explore.
Off the Reef is a small, beachfront home. It is on a beautiful, beach front property that gently slopes down to the ocean. A private 150 ft. long pathway takes you to this beach. Perfect for couples looking for rest and relaxation along with lots of Sun, Sand and Beach. Swimming-basking in the sun-fishing-barbecuing on the large patio, snorkeling-long tranquil walks-bone fishing-scuba diving-island tours-bird watching-deep sea fishing-shelling-enjoying all the beach has to offer. Take your pick.
There are so many beautiful, secluded beaches on Eleuthera. Try visiting just a few. Lighthouse Beach on the southern most tip of the island and Whiteland beach on the Atlantic side about four miles south of Rock Sound are especially beautiful. Try getting a copy of The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera and explore away.
There is now horse back riding about five miles from Off The Reef at Ocean View Farm. Live the dream of horse back riding along the beaches of Eleuthera.

The snorkeling is the best that Eleuthera has to offer.
Our caretaker, Mr. Ben Deal is only a phone call away to help with any problems or concerns that you may have. He can help with car rentals, information, or fishing trips. Almost anything is possible! It is about a 20 min. drive from the nearest airport in Governor's Harbour. Ben can help with that. Either a pick-up (not included, contact Ben for his rate), or a waiting rental can be arranged.
This vacation rental is near both Palmetto Point, Governor's Harbour, and several other towns. These towns offer shopping, fishing tours, rentals, groceries, stores, souvenirs, local art, even a small theatre, restaurants and much more for your vacationing pleasure. You will enjoy the Governor's Harbour Bakery. Just follow the signs. The Island Farm is a good source of produce. Nice and fresh and twice a week they have fresh baked bread. There are several very nice restaurants including Mate and Jennies, famous for their conch pizza.
Governor's Harbour also has the most unique library. Well worth your visit. They offer the use of HI-Speed Internet. Tarpum Bay and Governor's Harbour have fish for sale that has just been fished from the sea. Buy right from the boats, at the harbour. Don't forget to see the Glass Bridge and preacher's cave. Take a boat ride and visit Spanish Wells and Harbour island.
Off the reef is a wonderful place for you to enjoy your tropical holiday.
It took way too long for me to review this property! First of all, please do not go to Eleuthera if you are seeking luxury and convenience. You won't find it. Part of the beauty of this place is that it is AUTHENTICALLY BAHAMIAN! Sometimes the town water goes out (happened one morning while we were there and we just waiting till it was back on that afternoon to shower), sometimes the cable goes out (generally bootlegged from the US anyway). Sometimes things break that are out of the owner's control (like the fridge freezing up when we were there-no big deal, we just used the cooler for day or so till the maintenance guy came by and fixed it). You are in paradise people! We went to a different secluded beach everyday! My only regret was that February is a rough month on the Atlantic side-and that happens to be where the best snorkeling is. Don't get me wrong, we snorkeled on the Caribbean side and it was calm and crystal clear, but not near the abundance of sea life that we would have seen behind this house on the Atlantic side! If you are renting this house, maybe do it in some other month if you are planning to spend most of your time snorkeling and fishing/spearfishing. The mornings and evenings were a little too cool and windy during that time of year, though the views are amazing. I would love to go back to Off the Reef in a different month. Property was just as advertised.
-Jack's Bay beach-you'll be alone
-Lighthouse Beach, Get a jeep
-Island Farm (fresh bread certain says, be there before they open!)
-Rose at Northside Inn & Restaurant, Rock Sound (good prices, good conversation, great view)
-Tippy's for drinks and a good band
-Bucaneer Club in GH, reasonably priced and good authentic food (roaming chickens too!)
-French Leave Beach-Go to the Beach House bar for drinks
-Sammy's Place-Rock Sound-good food
-GH Fish Fry
-bring an international GPS and a book of beaches with coordinates
-bring an underwater camera
-take your snorkel gear, cooler of drinks, bug spray (DEET-spray it on you every morning before you go outside), swimsuits, and suntan lotion EVERYWHERE with you! Just in case!
-get your alcohol and groceries when/where you can--everythings closed on sundays except SOME restaurants/bars
We didnt get up to the Northern end of the island, but we will in Dec. when we're staying up that way! We are going to pack a suitcase with non-perishable food and a cooler bag with frozen meat this time. Enjoy! Cheers!
Off the Reef was exactly what I had hoped: Clean, comfortable, casual, and a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. My wife and I spent our 20th anniversary here and LOVED it. We spent the first two days just walking the beach, snorkeling and swinging in the hammock. The grounds at OTR are beautiful. So is the beach. We saw very few other people on it the entire week. Most romantic. We prefer cooking to eating out and the kitchen was well-stocked. So was the "fun stuff" closet once we started to feel adventurous. Snorkeling gear, lots of good towels, binoculars, bicycles, etc. The only word of caution I would offer prospective renters is to let you know that the infrastructure on Eluthera is 3rd world. The internet goes out sometimes, as does the TV. There are few street signs. The water went out when we were there but the property mgr came out and switched us to cistern within hours. No problemo. If you can deal with these little inconveniences I highly recommend OTR. To me it's all part of the relaxing charm of Eluthera.
Stayed at Off the Reef for one week in June 2014. It was exactly as advertised. Wish I could say the same for the island. If I was to return to Eleuthera, I'd stay here again, but that won't happen.
Had a couple of issues: TV didn't work most days, bring DVDs. No water for two nights, and backup system was broken, so I had to draw buckets of water from the cistern.
Off the Reef is a nice little cottage right on the beach. It's less than 30 seconds walk from the door to the water. It's a nice place to watch the sun rise and spend time relaxing. We couldn't believe the stars at night. There is so little light around the island, that the skies were incredible. Please spend some time on the hammock stargazing!
The house itself is very nice and clean. It is very well organized and has everything you'll need. I'd recommend stopping by the grocery store on your way and stocking up on snacks and the basics.
They have provided many things for the guests to use such as snorkeling gear (I think there are 3 or 4 decent sets of gear), some fishing gear, boards and beach towels.
The caretaker is very nice and helpful, and was available when I contacted him after the water went out, which happens occasionally on the island of Eleuthera. He came up to the house and helped get water from the cistern to use for washing, etc. It was very nice to not have to worry about anything. The time was spent enjoying many parts of the island.
Many thanks to the owners of Off the Reef! Wonderful home!
'Off The Reef' was just as we expected and then some! A serene setting just a walk to our own beautiful beach! I want to thank Carolyn for answering my numerous questions before our trip. I also had the pleasure of talking with her and Allan when they called to see how everything was during our stay. The house is very clean and the care taker, Ben, called after waiting for us when our flight was delayed to make sure we arrived that night.
When we were not exploring this beautiful island, we spent our time outside sitting on the new wooden swing or laying in the chaise lounge chairs (with comfy cushions!) just embracing the wonderful views!! Any direction you look, there was never a disappointment! As others noted, many cruise ships can be seen passing by in early mornings and later evenings. The stars on a clear night are something never to be forgotten.
Inside the house, the fully equipped kitchen was our favorite. We LOVE to cook and everything we needed was there to prepare our meals. We dined on the patio just steps from the ocean! The bedroom, living area and bathroom were more than adequate and most comfortable. Full laundry as well!
The island has so much to offer and we recommend exploring as much as you want to. As others noted, the locals are very friendly, be sure to wave as you pass! And stay left :)
Can't wait to stay here again!
We stayed at Off the Reef for your 25th anniversary the week of June 15-22 2013. I want to thank the owners for answering my endless questions and the phone call in the middle of the week asking how things were was really appreciated. The beach house for us was perfect, we could not have found a better place. The house is ideal for 2 people wanting to "get off the grid" and just decompress and enjoy the beautiful island of Eleuthera. We explored many beaches but hands down the best snorkeling is straight out from the house about 30 feet from shore and you will see all kinds of tropical fish and reef life. we spent every evening in the chaise lounge chairs watching the ocean and the cruise ships go by and not once did we see a soul. if you want your own beach that feels like yours this is the place. if you and your partner are looking for a secluded spot in the Caribbean this is the place.
PS. Careful with the rum bubbas at the Friday night fish fry in governors harbor. they are POTENT!
From Governor's Harbour (nearest airport) Travel S. (5 Mi) to N. Palmetto Pt.
It is a rural setting. A vehicle rental is recommended.
