About Darren Maginley

Our familes purchased the cottage several years ago as a place to get away from the city, traffic, commute times, overflowing schedules and chaos. Time spent at the cottage helps us connect as a family and reminds us what's really important.

Darren Maginley purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Darren Maginley chose Ingonish

We chose this cottage because we couldn't find anything else like it. As one of the original houses in Neil's Harbour/New Haven, this home/cottage oozes unique charm.

After two or three days back at the cottage all the stresses that overwhelmed us at work melt away. After the fourth day we always seem to do the math trying to find a way to early retirement so we never have to go back home.

We're thrilled to be able to share our cottage with other families, retired couples and guests from around the world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the reminder. I meant to email your review, but got so busy!

Your cottage is absolutely wonderful! My husband and I had been to the island about 15 years ago and the drive up was almost like a drive home. The people in Nova Scotia are so friendly and welcoming. Although it did rain for two days, we still had a wonderful time laying in bed reading listening to the waves and rainfall.

We will be recommending your place to my wife’s parents who are travelling the Northeast early next year.

Got back to basics but with a little Netflix

  • 5 of 5

Hi guys,

Sorry to be late with the review.

As we discussed last fall I wanted to tell you and everyone interested how wonderful we found our stay. The cottage was perfect, a balance of rustic charm but with good speed wifi to allow my guilty pleasure of action movies over Netflix, I think it's wonderful you threw that in, we weren't expecting it and am glad I brought my tablet.

As much as we loved the cottage, the area was truly a wonderful experience. As you may recall I took my camera gear and watercolours and found myself lost in time standing atop cliffs overlooking breathtaking views and in the Provincial Park exploring nature.

I found it a bit windy on a couple days to paint, but my camera did the trick of capturing the images that I've somewhat been able to recreate. I have a painting here I would like to send you for the cottage if you wish. I think it would be very meaningful for me to contribute to the enjoyment of future guests.

I would also like to find out about exploring during other times of the year, perhaps latter in the season when some of the tour season slows. Could you please tell me your rates for Octoberand January of nest year?

With sincere thanks,

Owner's Response: Outstanding! Yes, we'd love to have your work in our cottage! Perhaps you could hang it yourself on your next visit. I will be in touch about getting you a great return rate this fall, however the cottage is closed during the winter months. Warm regards

Lovely home away from home

  • 5 of 5

What a sweet little home away from home. We really appreciated the ability to walk a few minutes to the grocery store and were quite suprised to find a drug store in this little town. The local caretaker was very helpful finding our way up to the whale watching and some advice for local art galleries on the Cabot Trail. I purchased a lovely fine art print taken by a local photographer.

We even walked along the beach and I collected shells, something I haven't been able to do since before I was married! We would like to truely thank you for this wonderful experience that we'll remember for a long time.

Owner's Response: We're very happy to hear about your wonderful experiences. There are numerous artists in the area offering their work and it's so nice to be able to take home something of value, rather than just cheap plastic tourist novelties. Your fine art print sounds like a great find and will not only be a constant reminder of your time out east, but it will probably go up in value! Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review and share your experiences.

East Coast Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was well equipped and had a lot of character. The place was clean and well looked after. It provided for the two of us and our two grandchildren. The only real drawback to the cottage itself was the lack of tv. We were under the assumption that there would be satellite or cable for the kids to watch. Not sure if you ever figured that out? Not a big problem, but it would have been nice for the kids but we had a laptop with some movies on it. The other reason that we did not give a five star rating is the difficulty in finding the place. It would be nice to have a larger and better sign for the street name. Would be difficult to find after dark, especially since it is located back up on a hill. The location was nice and had a great view but you have to drive everywhere to buy groceries, go to the beaches or find a restaurant. Now having said that, we did want a quiet and peaceful place to stay and this place delivered. We are not big seafood lovers but we managed to find some restaurants that offered other foods as well. We would definitely recommend this place to others. We took the kids to several beaches and went on a whale watching tour. They enjoyed all of that despite the fact that we never saw any whales. Overall the trip was fun and memorable. We have lots of pictures to remind us of this vacation. Thank you for letting us stay there.

Very Disappointing

  • 1 of 5

The best aspect of this cottage is the fact that you can buy crab from the fish plant. It is cheap and delicious! The listing is accurately described as New Haven just outside of Neil's Harbour. The exterior of the cottage is shown accurately; however, the view is misrepresented. It doesn't show the debris and junk strewn in the neighbours' yards which is what you look at from the deck. The bedroom presents a problem. There is no railing on the stairs. The bathroom is downstairs.Instead of hearing the ocean at night, you hear the hum of the seafood processing plant which operates 24/7. We checked in to find that the cottage had not been cleaned. There were piles of ants and spiders...rugs had not been vacuumed and the kitchen sink was rusty. Many of the dishes had to be re-washed. There is no satellite t.v. I emailed the owner on day two of our stay asking about this but he did not get back to me. I would never recommend this property to anyone. I recommend a drive to Meat Cove, the Fiddlin' Whale Tours in Pleasant Bay, the Chowder House and the Seagull Restaurant.

Owner's Response: Hi Joyce, I'm sorry to hear that you chose to leave a negative review. As we stated several times by email and phone, we will not be bullied by blackmail. Our policy, as stated when you booked does not allow refunds. We suggest our guests get traveller's insurance. Medical or personal life changes if you choose to head home early do not warrant an exception. I'm sorry to see that you chose to take a disrespectful path and misrepresent your stay. The fish plant can be seen across the harbour and we have never heard it ourselves when we've stayed in June-July, neither has our property manager who has lived in Neil's Harbour for many, many years. We've also not heard that from previous guests, so I can honestly say I am not sure why you would mention that. With a pair of binoculars you can see people working on the dock, but we're certainly not located in an industrial area. In regards to the cleanliness of the cottage, it was stated that the check-in time is 3:00 pm to give our property manager enough time to clean the house and change the towels and bedding. You arrived early and I feel it was unfair to point out and exaggerate the dishes and 'piles of spiders' when we didn't have time to get everything ready in time for you. You were welcomed into the cottage early after your long drive, but the obvious exchange was that we wouldn't have it fully ready. Because this is a cottage in a small fishing village, we're constrained to things like historic houses that don't have bathrooms on every floor, hot tubs or room service. Part of the charm of the cottage is to live a little more rustically than a four-star hotel and our guests usually understand that. There's countless wonderful views within 20 minutes in any direction and we encourage our guests to go explore them instead of moping around the house watching tv.

Great cottage on Cape Breton

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful cottage to rent; description was completely accurate, and the cottage had everything we needed for a very pleasant and comfortable stay. You can even wash your clothes and hang them out on the line to dry. We are hikers, who particularly love Acadia National Park in Maine, but Cape Breton is much more remote and undeveloped. You do not see high end hotels or restaurants and many of the homes are very modest, even humble. The natural beauty of the Cape Breton is gorgeous and the hiking trails are quite good---though be prepared to do some driving to find them. Trails are not always close together. I would highly recommend this place for a relaxing week away from the hub-bub of life.

a week in which to wake up and smell the roses

  • 5 of 5

We had one of the best vacations we have ever had, in good measure because of the comfortable cottage, and of course aided and abetted by the sheer beauty that surrounded us in this special part of Cape Breton.

We went hiking every day on a different trail of the Cape Breton Highlands Park nearby, and each evening came "home" to the tranquility of New Haven, a pocket-sized harbor town. Everything we needed was supplied at the cottage, including every kitchen utensil. I love to cook, and rarely find someone else's kitchen this easy to negotiate (even had a salad spinner!). There are several small market scattered around the area; I recommend the fish market in Ingonish especially, and lobsters can be purchased at the fishing pier across the harbor. I hesitate to rave about the beauty of Cape Breton because one of the pleasures is the lack of development...but, go, see for yourself. The roses I refer to are wild beach roses, rosa rugosa, which surround the deck of the house and permeate the air with their wonderful scent.
