This is not a vacation home that we built as much as it is an experience that we created. Please read our guest reviews!
As seen in Sunset and Dwell Magazines, the Lotus Lake House is a completely 'green' exclusive home designed by the award-winning architect Michelle Kaufmann. Its sleek & modern with accordian-style glass walls that completely open to the deck and views of the lake. Lots of windows and cool welcoming tones. We are completely off-grid and have been awarded 'Build it Green' and 'Keep the Sierra Green' certification.
We're situated on 7 acres of private forested property. We cleared just enough trees to have fabulous views of Rollins Lake or instead of just gazing, hike the private trail from the deck to the lake and hop in the canoe we provide guests. With the glass 'Nano' walls open to the outdoors - indoor and outdoor living is blended. No neighbors or other structures in sight! Just the Sierra Mountains, trees, deep blue water, deer, owls, raptors and the ocassional honking geese.
Whether you are on the deck sipping coffee and watching the beautiful sunrise over the mountains, reading, sipping a drink at sunset or star gazing at night, the experience is magical.
Our home is ideally suited for a romantic get-away, or for a couple of good friends or close family members who just need a retreat from the stresses of daily life. Sit on the deck and enjoy the water activity during the summer, swim in the lake or come off season when it's absolutely still. Ideal for writer/artist retreat. Only earth-friendly products are used so it's perfect for people with chemical sensitivities.
For those who want to support the environment while staying in an exclusive and unique property, you can't ask for more. You'll feel like you are in a treehouse. As one of our guests said, 'if you need to relearn how to breathe, this place will teach you'!
Come experience off-the-grid living in luxury!
The Lotus Lake House was the showcase home at the 2007 West Coast Green Show in San Francisco.

We are very interested in doing our part to protect our planet and the environment. Both refugees from the corporate world in Silicon Valley where we held demanding jobs we enjoyed building our dream eco-friendly vacation home in the middle of a forest overlooking beautiful Rollins Lake. Tod designed the off-grid system himself and despite his wife's initial trepidation, it's amazing! This is our home and when it's not rented we delight in escaping the Bay Area for the beauty and simplicity of its zen-like qualities.
Tod duBois purchased this house in 2009
We love the Sierras and a number of years ago bought 8 acres in the forest overlooking Rollins Lake with the intent of building a low carbon-footprint vacation home that would be all about the views. Although our home is private & secluded we liked that we are within 10 minutes of wineries, the quaint artist town of Nevada City, the historic Gold Rush town of Grass Valley, hiking, exploring the gold mines, and organic farms and only 45 minutes to Sugar Bowl Ski resort.
You will come away rejuvenated, even after just 2 days! As one of our guests wrote: 'If you need to learn how to breathe again, this place will teach you'. Most of our guests have plans to do lots of things and wind up not leaving the house! The seclusion, the tree-house feel, the lake views and access to the lake and a canoe make this a very special getaway for 2.
Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to stay at this wonderful home in the woods! There is nothing like waking up to birds chirping and the smell of trees. It is so calm here and we are loving it. Staying in your home has really made us more aware of our energy usage and hopefully that will follow us home. Our dog has been just as happy as we have been and she has discovered that the only thing more fun than chasing squirrels is chasing lizards! Thank you so much! We look forward to coming back and telling everyone we know.
My husband & I booked the Lotus Lake House for an intimate, private, secluded weekend retreat. We found the directions very easy to follow and we’re very happy to see the house as pictured from the website. We were looking forward to the glass walls to enjoy the rain & evening sky, the privacy from other people and a place beautiful to want to stay in all weekend. Although it is secluded, it was not as private as we anticipated. We noticed people camping about 150 feet up from the house and you can also see another “house” from the side of the Lake House. We didn’t feel it was an issue with the “house” as we could not see any noticeable windows. As for the campers, we did feel as if we were in a fishbowl since the front of the house is glass walls and a clear view to the campers. We kept wondering if they were watching us (slightly creepy). I am unsure if they are allowed to camp or not, but it did give us an uneasy feeling since we had not read anything about campers in the guest book. We also did not contact the owner since we were there for just the weekend and felt it probably wouldn’t make much of a difference. Although it was creepy, we went on with our rainy weekend. We took advantage of watching some movies the owner had, but we would suggest bringing your own, as it is slightly limited. We realize the owner does not carry an extensive collection due to all the nature, but we were rained in, wanted to cuddle up, enjoy the rain, and watch a movie with some popcorn. We really enjoyed our intimate weekend. We found the Lotus Lake House had everything we needed.
A few recommendations:
1. Read the guest book first. Many questions can be answered in it.
2. Bring an IPod adapter for IPhone to use for music (for the owner I would suggest having one at the house).
3. If you are allergic to dogs, the Lake House is probably not for you. It is a dog friendly property- inside & out. Immediately after opening the front door you can smell a strong odor of dog (smelled a mix between wet/ unwashed dogs). (For the owner we would recommend an air fresher to reduce the odor).
4. The bed is firm- we had read this in prior reviews, but felt that firm could mean something different to each person. For us, it was too firm, so be prepared if you enjoy pillow tops mattresses.
5. The frig is on the smaller side, so plan accordingly.
We would recommend this house to anyone looking for a couple’s retreat .We would not recommend a group, as the house is l
We spent three nights at the wonderful Lotus Lake House recently to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Lotus Lake House is situated in a beautiful coniferous forest, with glimpses of the lake below through the trees. Although it was the second half of November, there was still beautiful muted fall color around the lake. We hiked on the shores of the lake the day we arrived. It rained the following two days and nights, and we explored nearby picturesque towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City, watched movies on the widescreen tv, listened to music though the built in sound system, and just slowed down to the speed of life!
We brought food to prepare from our home in the Bay area, and found the local grocery to stock items which we forgot. The kitchen is compact but highly functional. The bathroom has a wonderful shower surrounded by tiles made from recycled wine bottles. The bed was very comfortable, and we fell asleep listening to the rain falling on the roof. In the morning we saw a deer looking at us through the glass walls of the house. We appreciated all the energy efficient aspects of the home, and have happy memories of our time there.
The lake house is an amazing place. It’s beautifully designed and incredibly well-equipped. It has wonderful lake and mountain views, but our favorite view at the lake house is the night sky. We’re city folks and don’t often get to see really clear night skies. There are binoculars there, but if you have one, bring a telescope. It’s phenomenal.
During our stay at the lake house there was a full super-moon vividly clear for us through the bedroom window. Also, on several mornings we enjoyed spectacular sunrises through the same window.
The house is exactly as described. Kitchen is well equipped, and there's a great gas grill on the deck. The large folding glass walls make it feel like a tree house. It’s a short hike down to the lake, and a short drive to get supplies.
It was such a relaxing time. There’s plenty to do in the area, but we found it hard to make ourselves do much. The owners, Tod and Barrie, were happy to answer questions, and they’ve put together a binder full of information about what to see and do (and eat) in the area.
All this while living off grid; who knew? It was a wonderful experience.
I absolutely loved this place. It is peaceful, tastefully designed, has so many lovely amenities and was designed with no EMF/RF so that people who are sensitive to wireless radiation (like me) can come here and sleep like a lamb! This is an off grid house that works so well that you will not notice the difference. It was great for cooking, the shower was majestic as was the master bedroom. My friend slept in the front room and we both hated to leave. If you need to use your cell phone it will work, and the reception outside is great, but the house is far enough away from things that and designed so well that my EMF meter gave a perfect reading. The annotated guide to the house and the story of how it was created make for fun reads and add a warmth and personal touch to this idyllic rental home. Bring food, because we really enjoyed cooking and eating breakfast and dinner in, or outside overlooking Rollins Lake.
It was so much fun to check out a modern prefab - a unique departure from so many rental homes! Property was clean and in good condition, and the view of the lake is lovely. Our vintage Bronco broke down on the way there, so we ended up stranded - but what a great place to be stranded in! We discovered that you can walk to the nearest general store and fruit stand. I plan to return and do a bit more exploring next time! Only suggestion for improvement would be a small freezer or portable ice maker for those martinis!
The Lotus Lakehouse was perfect in every way imaginable! Allowing the outside to come in and enjoying the beautiful views and fresh air was amazing! Our dogs loved running up and down the private path to the private cove on the lake and diving in to the water. Sunbathing and playing games on the patio was ideal! We loved fishing in the cove and also took to some of the suggested coves of the locals. We barbecued every night and the Lakehouse was stocked with everything you could ever need. We were truly impressed and will definitely be coming back! Thank you thank you thank you for the relaxing vacation we absolutely needed!
We are in the Sierras/California Gold Country. While totally secluded and nestled in the forest you are minutes to the historic gold rush towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City as well as other beautiful little towns. There are wineries, gold mine tours, theatre, shopping, restaurants, hiking, swimming and water sports, There are wonderful festivals such as Cornish and Victorian Christmas, The Wild & Scenic Film Festival, lots of art galleries.
Other Activities: kayaking, boating, downhill/alpine skiing, snowboarding, wildlife viewing
