"Cozy Home-Away-From-Home in an Excellent Location"

Kyoto Nene House is a quaint and cozy home-away-from home located on a quiet street just steps away from the beautiful Kyomizu Temple and the historic streets Ninenzaka and Sanenzaka (full of tourist shops, to be sure, but excellent treats, nice little lunch places and not a total assault of kitsch as it could be). Also not to be missed is the Kodaiji Temple right next door - probably overlooked a lot because of its proximity to Kyomizu, but featuring beautiful gardens and some fun rub-my-belly-for-good-luck sorts of statues. Also an easy walk to Gion (though don't bother visiting there until evening). We also took a "scenic walk" from the house to Ginkakuji Temple via the Philosopher's Walk - even with 2 babies it was lovely and doable in an afternoon.

We stayed comfortably with 5 adults and 3 kids (one two-year-old and 2 10-month-olds) - though sharing a room of futons with ordinarily crib-bound kids wasn't always easy. The bath was delicious after long days of being a tourist, and the kitchen was large and open and a nice place to hang out in the evenings (though with all the excellent nearby food options, we ended up not cooking a single meal there).

Taking a cab from the train station is highly recommended - but make sure to bring along a printout of the map as well as the address and phone number. Our cab driver wasn't quite sure where to go but figured it out after some time on the iphone. We ended up walking back to the train station for our return - a long walk, but nice to see a different part of the city.

One thing to note for the jetlag prone - nothing in the neighborhood opens before 10am, and everything shuts down around 4 or 5 (except for a few of the small restaurants). Early dinners are a good idea, and the nearby 7-11 (5 minute walk to the main drag) was where we ended up getting breakfasts (actually, don't knock it - they have really good rice balls there and some prepackaged meals that are pretty tasty).

We stayed for 4 nights and Nobu (who speaks very good english and was quite helpful) came once in the middle of our stay to refresh towels and empty the trash. We felt very well taken-care-of.

I highly recommend Nene House - I will sing its praises to anyone who will listen and I plan to go back and stay there longer next time!

KYOTO NENE HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
We have a fantastic stay at Kyoto Nene House. Nobu San greeted us on arrival and familiarised us with the house and the local area. The house was perfect for our family of five and Nobu San helped us with everything we needed. In short the location was fantastic and the accommodation was very comfortable and convenient. Thank you to Nobu San for a wonderful stay. We would highly recommend this to friends.

BEST LOCATION IN KYOTO!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for 10 nights recently in Kyoto Nene. Nobu greeted us upon our arrival and was really helpful and available for any questions we had. The weather was stinking hot outside but the house had aircon in all rooms so we were really comfortable. Kyoto Nene was also really spacious for our family of 5. We used the fully equipped kitchen every morning for breakfast and enjoyed the living room to read and wind down from a full day of excursions. The taxi area is a minutes walk away and the convenience stores also within walking distance along with bus stops. The cobble stoned streets near the house are some of the most famous streets in Kyoto and living in the house meant we could enjoy them every day rather than only getting to visit them once as others might. We would definitely recommend a stay here and will stay ourselves again we hope one day.

COZY SPOT ON QUIET STREET

  • 5 of 5
Was really happy with our stay at Nene house. It is charming and well equipped. Not posh or glitzy, but I personally think better suited to a stay in Kyoto. It's only a block away from the cool old shopping district of Higashiyama, so we didn't have to take busses or trains to go poke about. We have three teenagers and they could just come and go as they pleased, which made the stay that much more relaxing. Also great for walks right out the door visiting some of the more notable shrines and temples. Not far away there is access to the mountain trails too. Nobu the host was very accommodating and made sure we knew where the close bus stops, grocery and restaurants were. His english was very good. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a house rather than hotel stay. One note is the bedrooms are up a steep stairway that could be tough with small children if you weren't used to that

COZY HOME WHICH SURPASSED OUR EXPECTATIONS!

  • 5 of 5
Dear Nobu,

We are glad to have chosen Nene House for our short stay in Kyoto. The property is well maintained, clean and well equipped with everything we needed. We enjoyed home cooked breakfast throughout our stay, using fresh local produce! The location is also unbeatable as the popular ninensaka and sannensaka shopping streets are just a stone throw away. Although the location may be a bit difficult to navigate at first, friendly locals made our day by showing us the way to the house. The free wifi is another plus as we found out that wifi offered at cafes and restaurants mainly caters to locals with data subscription. I highly recommend this place as a base to explore kyoto. The experience is definitely better than staying at hotels as it gives us an opportunity to live like a local. Thanks Nobu for making our stay memorable!

GREAT LOCATION!

  • 4 of 5
Our family of 6 enjoyed our 3-night stay at Nene House! Full of character and charm - it felt like we were staying at a heritage house. We were travelling with small children (ages 5 and 3), so having the conveniences of a modern kitchen was wonderful, especially when we were getting over jet lag. Cereal, milk, juices, breads, snacks, fresh fruits, veggies and prepared meals were all available at the nearby grocery store, a 10 minute walk away.

Getting around the neighbourhood was no problem, even with our little ones. The only challenge we had was having to carry the umbrella stroller with our sleeping 3 year-old in it, on our way to Kiyomizudera - lots of stairs! There were many beautiful souvenir shops and rice crackers to try, so we made many pit stops (much to our 6 year-old's delight).

Taking the bus was convenient, and finding a taxi was never a problem. We recommend having a printout of Nobu's map with you when taking a taxi there.

Nobu is very polite, helpful and accommodating. I highly recommend staying at the Nene house for a unique experience!

EUROPEAN FAMILY DISCOVERING JAPAN

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for 7 days in August and had a very nice time in Nene House. We had plenty of space for our family with 3 kids (13, 12 and 9 years old). We appreciated the Japanese style of the house, specially the sleeping rooms with the futons. The kitchen is big and it was convenient to have breakfast and dinner at home. There are 3 supermarkets and a bus station with several lines nearby (5 min by foot). We stayed during a very hot period so it was cool to have air conditioned in all the rooms. The location in a beautiful and quite pedestrian area is perfect. It's also close (1 bus station away) to the Gion district with it's lively nightlife. Kyoto has so much to offer that we stay the whole time in the city except for a day trip to Hiroshima with the shinkansen. It was our first time in Japan and we loved the country. We hope to come back one day.
