About Deborah Van Dyken

Bill Blair is a retired school principal who has lived in Carteret County for more than 40 years, and his people have been here for generations. Bill lives in Beaufort, North Carolina, was on the Carteret County School Board for ten years, and is a volunteer with Beaufort Historic Association. Bill's wife, Deborah Van Dyken, is a family law attorney in Beaufort, is a recent past president of Beaufort Ole Towne Rotary, and enjoys walking their dogs, Bubba and Rosie, around Beaufort.

Deborah Van Dyken purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Deborah Van Dyken chose Beaufort

We bought this investment property because it is in a great location and right around the corner from where we live.

What makes this cottage unique

When you stay at Shell Cottage, you can walk just two blocks to great restaurants, shops, the Beaufort waterfront, museums, ferry boats, and the post office. Also, Shell Cottage is in the Beaufort historic district, and it is fun to walk by these beautifully restored houses dating back to the early 1700's.

Beaufort is also on the Intercoastal Waterway and is a popular stopover for many wonderful boats of all descriptions. Walking down the Beaufort boardwalk, getting an ice cream cone at the nearby General Store, and looking at the numerous boats moored at the Beaufort docks is something everyone will enjoy.

Snug, convenient, well-appointed, and handy to historic Beaufort!

  • 5 of 5

Lots to like here, and we keep coming back. I don't think we had the TV on once, but there are lots of channels. We surfed the thrift stores, drove to easy -access beaches to hunt shells, watched dolphins and horses from our table at the boardwalk restaurant, rode bikes, read, walked, coffeed, and just kicked back. It's a slow polite town, and the people and the history make for a delightful setting. Mellow. And Deborah's contacts before and after our stay just put the capital T on "thoroughness" .

Charming cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was comfortable and inviting. It's within easy walking distance of the docks and a lot of great restaurants. Also within easy walking distance to the ferry to the Rachel Carson reserve. We got to see the wild horses, which was the highlight of the trip (for us and our dog). Unfortunately, the weather was too cold for us to take advantage of the two bikes included with the rental. We enjoyed our first visit to Beaufort and look forward to returning. We'd definitely stay here again.

Cozy, charming, relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

Everything we needed in one small package. The bikes were useful. The Saturday Farmer's Market is across the street. A great cup of coffee is just down the street at Cru. And it helps support work in Beaufort, Haiti to stay here. Have stayed before, will stay again. Love Beaufort.

Beaufort Hideaway Shines!

  • 5 of 5

The Shell Cottage is as cute as a button, and has everything necessary for a great stay! 3 blocks to Beaufort's waterfront, Saturday Farmer's market right across the street. Bicycles for cruising the neighborhoods and historic district of Beaufort, and a quiet, easily accessible location. I will be returning to this property if I can. I would recommend this wonderful property to friends and family without hesitation!

Sisters Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The listing was accurate. My Sister and I were plesantly surprised when we opened the door to the Cottage. We absolutely LOVED the decor and the cottage was so fresh and clean. We wished we could have stayed longer. The Cottage had everything we needed and more. We enjoyed relaxing outside with our morning coffee. Went downtown and shopped and shopped and shopped and had dinner at a Ribeye Restaurant, excellent. The second night we had a storm and lots of rain so we stayed in ordered a pizza and watched a movie. The owner was very helpful when I called to make the reservation. I would highly recommend this cottage for couples, "sisters" or small family. I plan to return in the fall with my husband.
