About Charlie & Lizzie

We are American diplomats; we are currently serving America's critical interests in two different countries :(, Lizzie in Iraq and Charlie in Kenya. We enjoy difficult places because it makes a difference, we think.

Our son loves America, and having visited 25 different countries and living in 6 countries on three continents, decided to attend the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He loves boarding school (we hate it, but...) He's a baseball star, and next year we all hope he plays at the college level. He's dashingly handsome, huh?

We have lived and visited all around the world, and decided that Crested Butte would be home: it is absolutely beautiful, and has some of the most interesting, friendly, and least self-possessed people we have ever met.

Wild Iris is our home sweet home...until we quit this crazy Foreign Service life we'll share it with you.

Come check out Crested butte..you'll love it!

Charlie & Lizzie purchased this house in 2004

Why Charlie & Lizzie chose Crested Butte

Beautiful country...interesting people....friendly people.....a town you can still walk in and chat with everyone you see.

What makes this house unique

You can leave your car behind and walk everywhere...now that's freedom, the perfect escape! It's a 5 minute walk to everywhere. We take our son up to the top of the mountains in summer and have a picnic, and then let him mountain bike home....all downhill. The house has lots of character, as do all the people.

Great Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place that would provide us a much needed break and access to hiking and fishing, two things we enjoy on holiday. Wild Iris provided us a clean and comfortable place to stay, well equipped for relaxation and cooking when we wanted to stay in, and a great location for taking in the convenience of the local bars and restaurants, as well as all the activities that Crested Butte has to offer. It was really nice to arrive, park the car, and not have to use it until we left. This was our first visit to the area and we're always abit apprehensive when selecting a new house to rent, but Charlie, the owner, made the process easy and was generous in answering our questions about the house and area. All in all and very good experience. We're already looking forward to a return trip and will definitely be staying at Wild Iris.

Relaxing stay in CB

  • 5 of 5

Crested Butte has been an annual fall stop on trout chasing vacations, and Wild Iris was a perfect place to come back to after spending the day on,in,and around the streams. The front deck was the place to wind down and enjoy the views of fall colors. Meals were an easy walk to for either breakfast or dinner. The beds were extremely comfortable for sleeping and recovery for the next day's activity. The layout of the house was great for five adults and any privacy needed. The place is both functional and comfortable, and it fits right in with the architecture and design of Crested Butte. Charlie, the owner, was super responsive and very easy to work with from start to finish. We look forward to another stay at Wild Iris.

Exceptional Home, Dont miss this one!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this home in July for a week and it was not nearly enough time! I just remember that I had promised to write a review and was so disappointed to read the review left by the people who stayed in August. Some people should just not rent other homes. I must have stayed right before them and found the home to be exactly what we wanted, a lovely historic home in the heart of town. It was exceptionally clean and we found the property managers to be very easy to deal with. We had had some internet issues and the were more than happy to help us. Charlie was so easy to work with and we cannot wait to rebook for next year. The kitchen has everything you could want and the linens and towels were plentiful. I truly wouldn't change anything about this place and hope that I can keep bringing our family back year after year. At this day and age, its very difficult to find a home that allows pets and it was so nice to actually have our pets welcome here.

Perfect Place in Crested Butte!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our 2 teenagers, stayed at Wild Iris for 4 days in July. It was clean, well-stocked, and perfectly located in town. We could walk to dinner and the kids loved biking everywhere they could. I liked the rustic ambiance which did not mean sacrificing comfort. In short, the description for the listing is accurate and we loved it.

Over-rated

  • 1 of 5

Most of the reviews on this house are positive, but we found the house over-rated, especially for the rental price. True it is in a great location. And it did take our dog. But it is getting run-down. It looks like it's had a lot of wear and tear. The "mudroom entry-way/laundry is filthy. House wall surfaces , floors, doors, are all grimy . Upholstry on big chair in living room is REALLY grimy. I found many items behind dressers, etc., and in drawers that were left behind by previous renters. Not pleasant! The basic amenities are there, but things are getting tired-looking. ………. The property manager, when he was notified to come clean up the place was extremely dismissive and rude. I finally asked him to just leave; he was so verbally abusive that I thought later I should have called the police. When I contacted the home owner, he also was not responsive to our complaints. At about the 5th email we finally got some cooperation. We would have moved, but there was no where else available in town. I realize my review will not jive with previous reviews. But I feel strongly I should post this warning. If you like things clean and tidy, and especially if you are older and accustomed to a more "professionally- tended rental" this is not the place for you. We would not return.

Perfect location, very clean, extrememly nice owners and management!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the Wild Iris! It is in a prime location when vacationing in Crested Butte in the summer. Being one block from Elk Street has so many advantages for both children and adults! We loved being able to walk to anywhere in the town. It is warmly decorated and reminds me of what a mountain cabin should be. We also appreciated the kitchen being well stocked with basic condiments, coffee filters, etc., but not being cluttered. The cabin was the perfect size for our family and it allowed us to have ample room to visit, but also provided areas where we could escape to read a book. It was very clean upon arrival and the flowers in the front of the home are absolutely gorgeous! The maintenance company came on Monday because we could not get the heat stove to turn on and it was quite chilly in the mornings. The gentleman was there in 10 minutes, quickly figured it out, and replaced everything so it would work properly. The bathtubs in both bathrooms are high off the ground so just keep in mind there is a higher than normal step into the bath. Our family did not have any issue with that, but something to consider. The mattresses are very firm in the twin and upstairs bedrooms and more moderate firmness in the queen bedroom. The owners and management are extremely responsive and very nice to deal with. My daughter left her jewelry bag at the cabin and they were so kind to send it back to us. We really enjoyed our stay at the Wild Iris and would definitely consider coming back next time we are in Crested Butte!
