We are American diplomats; we are currently serving America's critical interests in two different countries :(, Lizzie in Iraq and Charlie in Kenya. We enjoy difficult places because it makes a difference, we think.

Our son loves America, and having visited 25 different countries and living in 6 countries on three continents, decided to attend the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He loves boarding school (we hate it, but...) He's a baseball star, and next year we all hope he plays at the college level. He's dashingly handsome, huh?

We have lived and visited all around the world, and decided that Crested Butte would be home: it is absolutely beautiful, and has some of the most interesting, friendly, and least self-possessed people we have ever met.

Wild Iris is our home sweet home...until we quit this crazy Foreign Service life we'll share it with you.

Come check out Crested butte..you'll love it!

Charlie & Lizzie purchased this house in 2004

Beautiful country...interesting people....friendly people.....a town you can still walk in and chat with everyone you see.

You can leave your car behind and walk everywhere...now that's freedom, the perfect escape! It's a 5 minute walk to everywhere. We take our son up to the top of the mountains in summer and have a picnic, and then let him mountain bike home....all downhill. The house has lots of character, as do all the people.

We had a wonderful 4th of July week at Wild Iris. The location was perfect for the famous 4th of July parade one block away. We parked our cars and walked or biked most everywhere that week. Camp4Coffee is one block away and most restaurants were within walking distance. Crested Butte is very bike friendly and most people do not lock their bikes, which was a nice surprise and a tribute to its small town culture of honesty. We brought our bikes but discovered there were three available at Wild Iris.

The Wild Iris Guest House is a very comfortable and well laid out home. The master suite is upstairs which allows for more privacy and quiet. The downstairs has two bedrooms which stay cool and quiet too. The family room and kitchen are open and well equipped. It was nice to find some basics such as salad dressing, mayo, spices, olive oil and coffee filters in the kitchen. We enjoyed the collection of DVDs and local hiking books and maps in the family room. One of the nicest features was the "mud room" as you come into the house which was perfect for leaving shoes, jackets, bike helmets and dog food. It also had a stacked washer/dryer for our use, including laundry detergent.

One of the main reasons we picked Wild Iris is that Charlie allows and welcomes dogs. Our elderly, well-behaved labrador retriever loved her spot on her bed in front of the french doors looking out to the deck and small fenced yard. I must add that the house did not smell nor was there any sign that dogs had been there.

We enjoyed a week full of bike riding, hiking, four wheel driving, fishing, horseback riding and reading and relaxing. One of our highlights was the drive up to Taylor Reservoir and into Tincup for some great pie at Frenchy's. After exploring the town graveyard, we continued on up to the Cumberland Pass (beautiful view) and down to Pitkin which took us to Hwy. 50, back into Gunnison and then up to Crested Butte. Fun day in a great week! We'll definitely be back. We missed the peak of the wildflowers by a week or two.

Wild Iris had everything we needed during our two week stay in June, 2014. Appliances appear to be new, beds are comfortable and family room is just right for reading and viewing videos. It is within walking distance of numerous restaurants, grocery store, shops - everything to meet a visitors' needs.
Our objective was to take daily hikes and we used the book in the house that helped us locate the various trailheads, significant landmarks along the trail and estimated time to complete the hike. Evening was devoted to relaxing with some good wine, conversation and usually dining at a local restaurant. We especially enjoyed Gourmet Noodle, Bacchanale, Maxwell's, Le Bosquet, and for pizza the Secret Stash. Camp 4 Coffee has the best coffee in the area and the Sunflower Delhi prepares excellent sandwiches that
we took on our hikes.
Crested Butte residents are friendly and helpful. For example, one morning I found a note on our rental car windshield " your back passenger tire is flat". As I was preparing
the car for AAA service, a resident walked by and offered to help. The AAA person told
me to have the flat fixed at Crested Butte Auto Repair and within one hour the job was
completed at very reasonable cost.
Since everything is easily accessible, most people (including kids) ride bikes within the town. Cars must adhere to the 15 mph speed limit on most town streets. This helps to make Crested Butte a most relaxing place for a vacation!
We had friends stay with us for a few days during the two weeks and they are looking forward to returning. We have related our Wild Iris experience with others and suggested
they consider it for a future visit.

This is a perfect little getaway. The cabin is located within walking distance to everything! The slopes are just a short 5 minute drive from the cabin!!!

Everything was perfect at the cabin! Very cozy and clean. We had 4 people come on this trip and not a single complaint about anything!

There was a lot of snow, so we parked on the street the entire time (not sure if there is a drive way to park in or not because snow was piled high every where!) In doing so, we had to make sure we were on the right side of the street every night for the snow plows to come through. Signs are posted on the street with guidance for parking.

Kochevar's, Eldo, Talk of the town, Wooden Nickel, Danita's Cantina, Coal Creek Grill, and the secret stash (pizza) were are go to spots. Camp 4 Coffee opened daily at 0630 hrs and their coffee was excellent! Call ahead of time if you plan on eating at the wooden nickel.

All-in-all the Wild Iris is a great place for all types of groups to stay. Had an amazing time! Hopefully I will get another chance to visit!

Thanks,

David

We stayed for two months at the Wild Iris during mud season, a quiet time of year in town but still a beautiful place to hike and relax. The Wild Iris was cozy for my husband, me and our dog, Skimo and there was room when family came to visit. We enjoyed the large master bedroom upstairs and the open kitchen, dining and living area on the main floor. Many days we sat on the south facing deck and enjoyed the sunshine, even when there was a foot of snow on the ground :)!

The perfect family getaway

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this sweet house over Christmas. The excellent experience started by email with the owner and flowed through the entire stay. The house is adorable, high-quality and perfectly central. Comfy spaces yet lots of room. Great beds. Amazing location. We will definitely return.
