My wife Karen & I have always planned on moving to Northern Michigan since we have been married, 34 years ago. While circumstances have kept us from moving, we decided to enjoy the beauty & peace that only Northern Michigan has to offer now. We have never looked back on that decision.
The Owner purchased this bungalow in 2003
This was our first year visiting the Shelby Resorts. The cottages were great, Great fishing and boating location. We will be returning next year. Everything was very clean and well maintained. Great finding cottages with everything u need in them. (other than an electric hand mixer), needs one of those.:)
But other than that, we couldn't ask for anything better for rentals. Property managers were great and accommadating. any questions or concerns were addressed in a timely manner, always were available.
See you next year
We all had a great time. Lots of fun & great memories! Our grandkids, 2- 16 y rs. old & 2-12 yrs old, said this was the best vacation ever. We agree with them also. They always found something to do. Everything was very clean, neat, & very modern. The neighbors were also very pleasant. Thank you for letting us share your cottage. We hope to return next year!
We rented both cottages at the Shelby Resort for the first time this year in July 2014. The things we especially liked about Shelby Resorts was:
1. Location. We enjoyed long walks down the road for exercise in the cool fresh air. It was not completely remote, but offered the true up north cottage experience. It was also close enough to Alpena so we could shop for plenty of food, paper products etc:
2. Friendly neighborhood. Everywhere we went the neighbors were very friendly and welcoming. The little store/gas Station on Hubbard Lake was friendly and offered some of the basics. The restaurant across the street had great family style foods and awesome ice cream.
3. I really like the way the cottages were placed. Both had a great view of the lake. It offered a sense of togetherness, and yet privacy.
4. Close to many points of interest. We visited three lighthouses, The Old Bailey School, Rockport, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. Another day we ventured up to Mackinac. My husbands first time to see the bridge, the Fort and Presque Isle Lighthouse on the way back.
5. The views were spectacular. We were blessed with being able to see beautiful sunsets, as well as a super moon rising over Hubbard Lake. We also enjoyed the morning visits of a family of friendly ducks and ducklings that we kept very well fed during our stay.
We only used one of the fire pits to gather around and roast marshmallows. Since our stay was less than a week and we only had two "fire pit" days we got sufficient wood at the gas station. But it is really good to know that Chuck and Barb could provide larger amounts of wood at very reasonable costs for a future longer stay. The gas grill worked fine. We used the Lake View one and picnic table there for our cook out days.
We had a total of seven people with two vehicles and the parking space provided was more than sufficient and easy to move about.
Overall, everything was clean and pleasant.
We hope to do this again next year for a longer stay. Meanwhile.
Thank you Chris and Karen for the opportunity to visit your lovely piece of Northern Paradise.
Though we live nearby, we had never taken the time to visit or enjoy Hubbard Lake until our stay at the Shelby Resort. Wow! We have been missing out! We had such a wonderful, peaceful, and relaxing time there. We will, most definitely, return!
The cabins were clean and well organized. All we needed was food, linens, and paper products. Everything else was there; just like a home away from home.
Every morning we would grab our coffee and walk out the back door to the swing, or stroll down to the dock and watch the sunrise. It took our breath away! From sunruse to sunset we kept remarking to one another how blessed we were to be able to spend our time in God's great outdoors at such a beautiful location.
The lake was so clean and warm (even in September). Perfect for boating and fishing, which we did every day while we were there. Just be sure to BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat). The boat launch is just up the road!
Thank you to the owners and property managers for making our stay so enjoyable. They were very accommodating. We look forward to our return!
Enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The view was great from the inside of the cottage, as well as the outside. It was nice to have the use of a washer/dryer and a gas BBQ. The firepit on the lakeside was perfect for nightly fires. The couple who help manage the cottage were very pleasant and helpful.
This was by far the worst place we have ever stayed!
Do NOT stay here!!!!
To start parking is impossible and too small of an area for two resorts (ha, resorts that's not the right word at all, how about dumps). The whole driveway is angled so much we had to use our parking break. The back cottage was very old and dirty inside. As we walked in (after a long drive) we were greeted by a bathroom that had no toilet paper and carpet that looked like it was from 1960. The fold out couch had one long cushion with a 4 foot rip the whole length and the padding was coming out. The dishes that were there weren't washed, so we washed everything before eating (later deciding to buy paper plates and such to avoid the grossness).
The water at the lake is actually very clear and warm enough... too bad you have to be a trained mountain climber with a death wish to use it. Whoever wrote this place is family friendly must have stayed somewhere else. I have pictures of the so called water front on my cell phone that are nasty. The steps to the water are uneven, cracked and nearly unusable. My father fell on them carrying our 3 year old daughter and nearly killed both of them. The dock sways so much when you walk on it that you feel you can't use it at all or else you may not make it back up.
I could go on and on, but the bottom line is this is the worst place you could stay!!!! You will regret staying here as we do.
