This beautiful little cottage was custom built by the owners in 2003 for the express purpose of sharing it with visitors from around the world. The setting is quite magical; with a 200 square foot screened lanai overlooking a flowing stream and the tropical gardens, you'll never want to leave. The fully equipped kitchen comes with custom cabinetry and concrete countertops. From the comfortable queen sized bed in the master suite, step directly out onto the spacious (500sq ft) and very private open sun deck where there's a romantic soaking tub for two, and comfortable lounge chairs to enjoy your morning coffee or tea. We've recently upgraded with new brick pavers, new tiled tub surround and an outdoor shower - all in a very private jungle setting just out side your backdoor.
Area Sightseeing: You'll love the seclusion, but this does not mean you'll be isolated. The cottage is 3 minutes away from the charming little town of Kapaau and 5 minutes from Hawi. These little towns are reminiscent of Old Hawaii and filled with lovely galleries, restaurants and hospitable people. Travel three miles to the east of the cottage and you'll come, literally, to the end of the road. Here you'll encounter approximately 10 miles of deeply cut lush valleys that were once the breadbasket of the island and home to tens of thousands of Hawaiians. They're unpopulated now, and yours to explore. The first valley, Pololu, is a 15-20 minute hike down from the highway terminus to a beautiful rock-strewn black sand beach. Traveling west from the cottage, a25-30 minute drive puts you at some of the finest world class beaches of the South Kohala Coast. The cottage has beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, snorkels and fins for your use.
Activities: The immediate area has a variety of fun filled activities to enjoy: there's an eco-adventure tour of the scenic valleys via zip-line or if you prefer there's also all-terrain vehicle tours as well as horseback riding, golf , helicopter rides, etc. you name it; we have it all! The owners live just a mile and a half away and are ready to help make your stay perfect.
My husband and I stayed in this well-equipped and modern cottage for four nights. We found everything we needed and more in the cottage. The kitchen's cookware, plates, appliances and linens were in perfect condition and well chosen. When we were ready to go snorkeling we found they keep a full complement of gear, including beach towels and bamboo mats, free for guest use. The owners maintain a book chock full of articles about history and local activities. The cottage is surrounded with lush plants, including papaya and avocado trees. Our favorite area was the large screened in lanai where we relaxed, ate, read or dozed and enjoyed the sounds of the local birds and insects. The owners live nearby and were readily available and answered all of our questions. Nearly Kapaau and Hawi are charming and a welcome respite from busy Kona.
My husband and I stayed at Halawa House for our "Babymoon". It was the perfect location to explore the northern part of the Big Island! It was a great location to see the sights and beaches of North Kohala, and it was super easy to travel to the east, west and south sides of the island in a relatively short amount of time (we put over 1000 miles on our rental Jeep, and the drives along Saddle Road and some of the other back country roads were spectacular!). David and Susan, the owners, were incredibly friendly and delightful, giving us tips on local beaches and things to do around the north side of the island. They definitely sold us on the many perks of island living.
The house itself was snuggled off the beaten path, surrounded by a beautiful array of banana, orange, papaya, and avocado trees. The lanai was fantastic for lounging around, reading or simply listening to the variety of birds songs that filled the air throughout the day. It felt like being tucked away in our own tropical jungle hideaway, very peaceful and secluded. The kitchen was fully equipped (more than we could have hoped for!) and we were able to make our own meals (great for those few times when we were feeling too lazy to pop over to the great local restaurants and cafes in the nearby towns of Kapaau or Hawi). The house has a smart design with great utilization of space. It really felt homey, way more so than any hotel or resort could offer!
For the sake of full disclosure, we must advise potential vacationers to Halawa House (or to anywhere on the Big Island for that matter), there will be the occasional bug and gecko. Please remember that you are on a tropical island. As such, you will encounter all sorts of nature, sometimes right there where you are staying! (And that includes hotel rooms and resorts as we have stayed there too and encountered the occasional critter). All are completely harmless and actually quite fun to observe (we named one gecko who hung out at the back window in the evenings "Bob".) David and Susan do a great job keeping the house tidy and bug-free, but nothing is fool-proof. Their only request is to keep food in cabinets and in the refrigerator to discourage unwanted visitors, easy as that.
All-in-all, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to call home while on the Big Island. We will definitely be returning!!!
We just returned from our 8 day stay at Halawa house. This was our first visit to Hawaii and it couldn't have turned out better. We spent tons of time on the lani. The sound from the stream in the background was perfect. The local wildlife was much enjoyed! We enjoyed all the privacy offered by the secluded setting. We were in the perfect spot for experincing what Hawaii is suppose to be like. We enjoyed being able to have a full kitchen. The house is setup very nicely and we were very comfortable. David and Susan were very helpful with suggestions for things to see and do. Thanks for letting us know about the concert. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jeff Peterson in such nice local setting.
We would highly recommend Halawa house, and hope that we will be able to return in the future! Thanks again for making this house available for others to enjoy. We truly appreciate it!
An oasis in the jungle complete with welcoming basket of grapefruit, avocados, and bananas from the property. Even your own creek running by, with a lounge nearby to relax and enjoy. This is a fabulous spot, and makes the northern end of the island very earsy to see. It is a very laid back area and the villages are great fun to explore. Not a long trip to Hilo... and lots of whales to be seem on the 270 highway. We had spent a week in Kona area before coming here for 3 days.....next time it will be reversed!!! In face, all our time may be here. David and Susan were most helpful, and the house has so many comfort items.... a delightful selection of cd's, oodles of up to date tour books, SHARP knives, and lots of kitchen accessories... Bed very comfy, and bath easy to use .Thank you guys! The details in the house construction are beautiful and the large screened living porch is a delight. This is the first time we have ever met the actual owners of a VRBO exchange, and it was so nice to meet the people who care. Again, our thanks for a look at paradise....aloha.
This was our favorite place to stay on the Big Island! The tropical foliage surrounding the property made for a secluded and peaceful backdrop. The geckos were fun to watch. The house was very well designed and made us feel at home, it had pretty much everything we needed. We had dinner on the lanai every night. We liked that there was beach gear/snorkel masks available for our use. The book collection was very helpful as well as we used some of them to explore the area. There wasn't much walking distance from the house but it is totally worth it! I think this place spoiled us because now any place we visit will have to live up to the standard of the Halawa House.
My husband and I loved our 8 days at Halawa House. We were intrigued by the description on VRBO and thought the house met and exceeded the description. We found it to be lovingly crafted with so many beautiful details. The bed was comfortable with a nice tiled shower and roomy bath area. The kitchen was well-equipped and roomy. Lots of art and interesting things to look on the walls. I can't say enough about this place. Even the grounds surrounding the house are beautifully maintained with bird song, flowers and tropical fruit. You can't go wrong with this place.
We're so happy we chose North Kohala as the area to stay on the Big Island. The towns of Kapaau and Hawi were fun to explore with great shops and some really good restaurants.
Thank you David and Susan for providing the perfect setting at Halawa House for us tourists. We'd love to come back some day.
