My husband and I own this house with another couple. All four of us had long careers in education or criminal justice, and two of us are lawyers. We are also parents of both young and grown children, and dog owners.

Djuna Perkins purchased this cottage in 2010

Living in Boston, I missed the country I grew up in, and wanted to be able to recapture the country girl by having a foothold in the Berkshires. For my husband, it was the cultural attractions of the area. And for our kids, it was the lake and the wildlife!

We saw this house in the spring of 2009 and saw its great potential. At the time, the house was a one bedroom 600 square foot cottage, but it was on a beautiful, quiet piece of property with a lake and stream on two acres. We knew it could be paradise, and so we renovated it to add a second floor and take full advantage of the beauty of the land.

Perfect lake vacation for families!

  • 5 of 5
My family (2 adults, 1 toddler age ~2) had an incredibly relaxing vacation at this remote, scenic home. It was exactly as described. In fact, I think it was better than we expected -- much of the home has been remodeled, the backyard is huge and gorgeous, the house was clean and well-cared for, the lake access was perfect for our little family, even the life jackets look new. The welcome packet that the owner emails to you prior to your arrival is incredibly helpful, truly welcoming, and very sweet. The kitchen is well-stocked: everything you could need to prepare meals, including some non-perishable staples that the community of tenants adds to over time (it appears). I'd recommend stopping by the house to check the pantry stock before getting any pantry staples (or do what we did -- leave extras of things for future renters).

We have no complaints and can't wait to return next summer. We fell in love with this vacation rental. It makes for an easy family vacation.

Tips for families with young children -- the house is easy to baby/toddler-proof: bring at least a dozen outlet covers (minimum, we'll bring a few extra next time), and bring one or two babygates with extenders. The stairway is lovely and wide -- almost too wide for the ordinary tension gate we brought! Next time, we'll bring our step-through gates with extenders so we're less nervous about the stairs. I'd recommend 2 gates (top and bottom of the stairs), but you can survive with one (or none, if your child is less of a daredevil!). You may want to bring one door knob cover as the door to the basement is easily opened. (We didn't have a problem with this since our child doesn't open doors yet, but we'll bring a knob cover next year.) Otherwise, we had no babyproofing needs.

Relaxing lake front weekend

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I loved this lake front home. The owner was quick, friendly, and very helpful. All of her directions were clear.

The home was clean, comfortable, and accurately described in the listing. We enjoyed canoeing on the lake and lounging in the back yard. I would definitely recommend this spot to a couple or family looking for a quiet, restful get away.

We were looking for a weekend getaway from NYC, and Becket presented itself as the perfect solution. Just a few hours from New York, we arrived and were immediately taken by how peaceful and isolated the cottage was. This was exactly what we were looking for. The house is beautifully renovated and the space is maximized. The best feature of the house is the wood-burning stove (woodpile available outside the cottage). We could not have asked for a better way to spend the weekend. We relaxed by the fire, cooked our meals in a full and well-stocked kitchen, and went on some great hikes nearby.
The owner was also incredibly accommodating, providing us with detailed instructions for everything we could have possibly needed. Also, the keycode system for the door is really helpful, especially if traveling with a group. No one has to worry about keeping track of a key or making sure to be home to let others in. Each group visiting the cottage creates a unique key code that unlocks the door.

If you're deciding on a place to stay in the Berkshires, stop here....

You Really Have to Stay Here!

  • 5 of 5
The listing was very accurate, the place was neat, clean, very homey and inviting. As a bonus there was even air conditioning on the main floor and the master bedroom upstairs. The AC on the 2nd floor was enough to cool the whole floor and there were window fans in the rooms w/o the AC. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and everything was just great. I highly recommend staying here. The lake is beautiful and serene. There are only about 3 or 4 other homes on the lake so it's very peaceful. There is a very large outlet outdoor mall-like shopping center in Lee that's less than 20 minutes away for the shoppers, Jacob's Pillow is just down the street and was offering free early performances on a magnificent outdoor stage - it was pretty amazing- , and if you stay you shouldn't leave without a visit to the Dreamaway Lodge. The Dreamaway offers good food and some great musical entertainment. All in all this was one of the best vacations we've ever taken. You really owe it to yourself to go. Joe G.

Beavers Paradise

  • 5 of 5
This was one of the better Home Away rentals that we have encountered. The house itself from the outside was beautiful and the inside was very clean and bright. All necessities were provided for a successful stay. The backyard has a deck that overlooks a large lawn and pristine lake. There is a lower area under the deck that has a separate rustic patio with hand placed stone fire-pit for warmth and ambiance. The beaver show started promptly at 6:00 with swimming critters building a dam. There is a side stream that we dipped into which cooled us down. We took a lovely canoe ride around the lake and landed on the other side by a small beach area. Everything contributed to a very peaceful and relaxing vacation for myself, wife and dog!

Quiet, Clean, Exactly as advertised

  • 4 of 5
Our family of four was very happy there. We enjoyed the sounds of frogs at night, the grill, the quiet and deck. It was a little out-of-the-way, lacked a dishwasher and the mattresses were very firm. The owner was quite nice. Overall, it was a good value for a short stay and we would certainly return.
