About Djuna Perkins

My husband and I own this house with another couple. All four of us had long careers in education or criminal justice, and two of us are lawyers. We are also parents of both young and grown children, and dog owners.

Djuna Perkins purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Djuna Perkins chose Becket

Living in Boston, I missed the country I grew up in, and wanted to be able to recapture the country girl by having a foothold in the Berkshires. For my husband, it was the cultural attractions of the area. And for our kids, it was the lake and the wildlife!

What makes this cottage unique

We saw this house in the spring of 2009 and saw its great potential. At the time, the house was a one bedroom 600 square foot cottage, but it was on a beautiful, quiet piece of property with a lake and stream on two acres. We knew it could be paradise, and so we renovated it to add a second floor and take full advantage of the beauty of the land.

Great visit - clean, quiet and

  • 5 of 5

Felt like we had a private getaway in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood on a bitter cold and snowy weekend in Feb, which was exactly what we were looking for. House is well maintained with renovated bedrooms/bathrooms. Driveway and walk to front door were plowed before arrival and after a snowy night while on a day trip to MassMoca. Good proximity to cross country skiing (Cadbury Farms) and quality dining (Prairie Whale in Great Barrington and Haven Cafe in Lenox were standouts). And when the snow started to fall, we got the wood burning stove going, pour some drinks and lounged and read. We'll be back!

I enjoyed staying at this property very much. As returner customers, my boyfriend and I really liked our visit this time. We loved the house and felt very relaxed and comfortable. We enjoyed the amenities as well as the layout of the house and look forward to returning next year!

Wonderful spot, plenty of room, super comfy beds!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time, plenty of room for the two 6 year olds & our dog. Enjoyed paddling around on the canoe and attending a local harvest festival. Would recommend picking up firewood on your way & packing extra toilet paper- we had just enough! Overall a really awesome long weekend, a must visit in the Berkshires!

Warm and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the cottage which is situated in the wooded Sherwood Forest area of Beckett on a chilly autumn afternoon and as we entered we found ourselves in a warm and cozy house which the landlord had remotely preheated for our arrival. We were meeting our friends for the weekend. The cottage was immaculately clean and the kitchen and bathrooms were new and beautifully designed. We all found the beds really comfortable. The grounds were just as advertised, the small lake is a stone's throw from the back door. Since it was late October it was too cold for a swim but there were two canoes available to paddle around the lake. There was also a small bubbling brook that ran through the property that you could hear from the deck and added to the feeling of being away. There are many wonderful restaurants in nearby Lenox and Stockbridge and amazing hiking close by. The landlord recommended a local place which we thoroughly enjoyed for dinner and music. We intend to go back and highly recommend this place for a getaway or an extended vacation.

Perfect lake vacation for families!

  • 5 of 5

My family (2 adults, 1 toddler age ~2) had an incredibly relaxing vacation at this remote, scenic home. It was exactly as described. In fact, I think it was better than we expected -- much of the home has been remodeled, the backyard is huge and gorgeous, the house was clean and well-cared for, the lake access was perfect for our little family, even the life jackets look new. The welcome packet that the owner emails to you prior to your arrival is incredibly helpful, truly welcoming, and very sweet. The kitchen is well-stocked: everything you could need to prepare meals, including some non-perishable staples that the community of tenants adds to over time (it appears). I'd recommend stopping by the house to check the pantry stock before getting any pantry staples (or do what we did -- leave extras of things for future renters).

We have no complaints and can't wait to return next summer. We fell in love with this vacation rental. It makes for an easy family vacation.

Tips for families with young children -- the house is easy to baby/toddler-proof: bring at least a dozen outlet covers (minimum, we'll bring a few extra next time), and bring one or two babygates with extenders. The stairway is lovely and wide -- almost too wide for the ordinary tension gate we brought! Next time, we'll bring our step-through gates with extenders so we're less nervous about the stairs. I'd recommend 2 gates (top and bottom of the stairs), but you can survive with one (or none, if your child is less of a daredevil!). You may want to bring one door knob cover as the door to the basement is easily opened. (We didn't have a problem with this since our child doesn't open doors yet, but we'll bring a knob cover next year.) Otherwise, we had no babyproofing needs.
