Photos and Description of the New Orleans vacation cottage rental
2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4, 1250 Sq Ft, Private Courtyard, Off Street Parking

Enjoy your stay at the Chartres Street Cottage, an exquisitely handcrafted and restored shotgun style Victorian cottage built in 1892. Privately located behind a locked gate, the Chartres Street Cottage is the guest house of an historic 1868 Italianate Creole residence. Conveniently located only 12 blocks from the French Quarter, this exclusive 1250 square foot cottage is in the historic Bywater. As the third oldest section of New Orleans, enjoy old southern elegance and charm at its best. Exclusive and private, the Chartres Street Cottage is exquisitely fully furnished with handmade, exotic hardwoods.

The Charm of the Chartres Street Cottage: In 'the city that care forgot', enjoy off street parking and your own private courtyard entrance. Indulge in the southern tradition of 'porch sitting' in your own private beautifully landscaped courtyard. The French Quarter is only 12 blocks away where you can enjoy beignets, Jackson Square, Preservation Alley and all that the French Quarter has to offer. Also conveniently located to the Jazz Fest Fairgrounds. The Chartres Street Cottage is privately owned and has been personally restored with historic preservation in mind. While enjoying your stay, you may notice the original crown molding throughout the home, magnificent pocket doors, classic pier and beam construction, antique roses in the garden from ancestors of our neighbors who brought clippings with them from overseas in the 1800's, and much more.

Amenities: The Chartres Street Cottage has 9 feet ceilings, central air conditioning and heat, ceiling fans throughout and on the porch, hard wood floors and carpeting, linens, a full kitchen, an enclosed sunroom, and a tin roof porch overlooking a private courtyard with a pavilion. Located around the corner from Markey's Bar, a favorite neighborhood watering hole. Be sure to ask for Roy Markey! Other local favorites in the neighborhood include Elizabeth's Restaurant, the Cake Cafe, and Feeling's Cafe.

Perfect for 4 adults

We loved our time in the Chartes Street Cottage. We were able to make the walk to the French Quarter in 15-20 minutes and really used the car pretty minimally. With our stay in March, it was wonderful to just sit out on the porch and relax. The pizza place down about two blocks was wonderful for our first night in and gave us a quick feel for the local flavor.

The bathroom lock and squeaky 1st bedroom door were our only real points to fix and they may be fixed by now. The shower/bathroom worked fine for us, but it is a small shower. The property was clean and Jim was quick to respond to any questions or offer suggestions for the local area. We felt safe and secure at all times although I wouldn't recommend walking back later at night. Ask Jim about the local grocery. We didn't find it until right before we left and wished we had checked it out earlier. It looked like a hole in the wall, but we were amazed at the selections available.

We'd definitely consider staying again if we return with only 4 adults.

True New Orleans Style

We stayed here during the Women's Final Four Tournament and it turned out to be a great choice. Having never been to New Orleans we weren't that familiar with the area and what to expect. We were just blocks away from the French Quarter but still in an area that felt like Old New Orleans. Jim was very helpful when we arrived by getting us oriented and gave us tips on where to eat and buy groceries. Would not hesitate to stay here again. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Our Place in NOLA

Even though the weather was inclement, the accommodations were delightful and our stay at the Chartres Street Cottage was wonderful. Plenty of room for everyone and the covered porch helped us enjoy outdoors despite the rain. Jim was there to welcome us and answer any questions. He's great!
The neighborhood is wonderful and offers a feel of the less touristy part of New Orleans. The residents of Bywater are friendly and nearby restaurants good.
At the Cottage, the beds were comfortable and the cottage is large. If you are wondering about the bathroom (since it isn't photographed) it is small but freshly finished and accommodating. Four adults and a toddler had no trouble sharing. There is a front room that remains underutilized. Perhaps a writing desk would be useful for longer stays. Off street parking is a big plus. We were really happy to have a retreat a bit away from the Quarter, but still amid the wonderful old New Orleans. All in all, we left with smiles on our faces that still arise when we have thoughts of our little cottage in the Bywater. Coming again soon, for a longer stay.

Fantastic historic cottage in New Orleans

Submitted: October 8, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
This is a gem of a property. It has great decor, Doug and Jim who manage it are really pleasant and helpful, the aircon was great! The beds were really comfortable and of beautiful high quality. The porch and yard area were fantastic, secluded and peaceful. Nice shower too!

There was a bit of an issue for us with mosquitos, but I think Jim normally has a way of keeping hem down (and they weren't too much of a problem - at the end of the day, staying anywhere in NOLA is likely to have a similar issue., with the warm humid climate).

It is located in Marigny Bywater, and we could walk to the centre of the French quarter in about 20 minutes, with a bit less to brilliant Frenchmen Street with it's small music clubs. We were happy to walk, but it's a short taxi ride if you prefer.

Marigny is a cool area on it's own, with the brilliant local restaurant Elizabeths just a block or two from the property. Would definitely stay again. Thanks.

Second Stay - Couldn't be better!

Second Stay - Couldn't be better!

Another delightful week in NOLA. We have fallen in love with our Chartres Street Cottage, and plan on making this an annual ritual. So refreshing to be able to retreat outside the French Quarter, and the neighborhood makes us feel like locals. Jim is his usual hospitable host of the finest order. Spent some time at the Country Club and Starkey's bar, and hope to try out some of the new Bywater restaurants next time around. Spent relaxing mornings at the cottage watching Olympics before heading out for touring, dining, etc. Swamp tour was fun, and we enjoyed the Mardi Gras / Katrina exhibit at the Museum. Learned to use bus transportation / taxis and didn't feel the need for a car. Would like to come during winter months, so we could enjoy the patio/garden area, which was our only regret. I can imagine how delightful that would be having morning coffee, and evening cocktails outside!

This was a girls trip - my sister and college roommate. (note - we still refer to us as girls, getting younger every day at 60+)
