Bywater Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4, 1250 Sq Ft, Private Courtyard, Off Street Parking

Enjoy your stay at the Chartres Street Cottage, an exquisitely handcrafted and restored shotgun style Victorian cottage built in 1892. Privately located behind a locked gate, the Chartres Street Cottage is the guest house of an historic 1868 Italianate Creole residence. Conveniently located only 12 blocks from the French Quarter, this exclusive 1250 square foot cottage is in the historic Bywater. As the third oldest section of New Orleans, enjoy old southern elegance and charm at its best. Exclusive and private, the Chartres Street Cottage is exquisitely fully furnished with handmade, exotic hardwoods.

The Charm of the Chartres Street Cottage: In 'the city that care forgot', enjoy off street parking and your own private courtyard entrance. Indulge in the southern tradition of 'porch sitting' in your own private beautifully landscaped courtyard. The French Quarter is only 12 blocks away where you can enjoy beignets, Jackson Square, Preservation Alley and all that the French Quarter has to offer. Also conveniently located to the Jazz Fest Fairgrounds. The Chartres Street Cottage is privately owned and has been personally restored with historic preservation in mind. While enjoying your stay, you may notice the original crown molding throughout the home, magnificent pocket doors, classic pier and beam construction, antique roses in the garden from ancestors of our neighbors who brought clippings with them from overseas in the 1800's, and much more.

Amenities: The Chartres Street Cottage has 9 feet ceilings, central air conditioning and heat, ceiling fans throughout and on the porch, hard wood floors and carpeting, linens, a full kitchen, an enclosed sunroom, and a tin roof porch overlooking a private courtyard with a pavilion. Located around the corner from Markey's Bar, a favorite neighborhood watering hole. Be sure to ask for Roy Markey! Other local favorites in the neighborhood include Elizabeth's Restaurant, the Cake Cafe, and Feeling's Cafe.

About Katherine .

Katherine grew up in New Orleans and Michael grew up in upstate New York. We have a 10 year old son. Michael moved to New Orleans in the early 1990's and bought old homes in the Bywater. We personally renovated (along with great help from family and friends) 5 homes with painstaking detail and attention to preserving the historical significance of each property. We met at Tulane Business School and now live in Austin Texas where we started a new concept store 11 years ago, Zinger Hardware & General Merchant. It is with great joy that we offer the Chartres Street Cottage to visitors from all over the world so that you can personally experience the history of New Orleans.

Guestbook comments from the owner

You folks have got a wonderful hideaway there in the midst of the New Orleans scene. Your shotgun cottage is phenomenal. I'm looking forward to coming back without festivities to just chill out and commune with the porch frogs. Please reserve the Chartres Street Cottage for 2011 New Orleans Jazz Fest.

Excellent ambience, great value.

We shared the cottage with another couple (old friends from college) and had a terrific stay. Your first impression from the street won't be great but open the gates and it gets better quickly. Very well furnished and well equipped....very comfortable beds and a nice combo of privacy and common space including the porch and courtyard. We feared the one bathroom would be troublesome but we did fine.

The walk to and from the quarter is a good antidote to the typical NOLA high calorie dinner. We took cabs after dark...approx $13 fare.

All in all, great value and will definitely book it again.

Home away from Home

The cottage was everything I expected it to be. The courtyard was relaxing and a great way to spend a relaxing evening after enjoying the festivities of Mardi Gras. The furnishing were amazing and inviting. You couldn't help but get a good nights rest in the comfortable beds. The only minor issue we had was the extremely small shower in the cottage. It left little room to maneuver in for the average size adult. This was the only reason I didn't put 5 stars
Jim, the manager, was awesome as usual. He made sure he was available on a moments notice even though he had friends in for Mardi Gras.
Nola never ceases to amaze me. The Bywater is by far my favorite area to stay in. It is centrally located and allows a quick ride or a relaxing a walk the French Quarter.
I will definitely continue to rent from this owner.

Just about heaven...

  • 5 of 5
One word sums up the Chartres Street cottage, and that word is 'magical.' From the moment that Jim, who oversees the property, greets you and shows you around, you can feel that you're in for a wonderful time. The cottage is spacious, well-appointed, a little eccentric in the classic New Orleans style), and extremely comfortable. But the greatest attraction of all is the garden. Sit on the porch and drink your morning coffee, while listening to the birdsong and soaking up the warmth. Then walk out of the gate into Bywater, the most happening area of the city right now. Loaf the hours away in the Dauphine Street flea market or one of many excellent local restaurants. Then back to the cottage and that porch! Just about heaven...

Great little house!!

  • 4 of 5
We stayed at the Chartres St. cottage this past weekend. Jim was really nice and gave us lots of tips about surrounding shops, cafes, etc. The house is in the Marigny-Bywater area, so not in the middle of all the hubub in a nice little neighborhood. We took the bus at Royal and Louisa all the way into the French Quarter. Very easy connection. Finding the way back to the cottage late at night proved to be a little challenging for us. We didn't figure out until the last night which bus went back to the house.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house!!

Very clean and adorable. Loved the bed in the master bedroom! It had a beautiful canopy that I let down when I went to bed. When I woke up it felt like I was in a cloud! Lol very close to French quarter. Huge sofa! Jim was an awesome host!
