Overall, nice stay. But not perfect.
Stayed at Dolphin House with family (mom, spouse and toddler son). Pros: Closer to most of the good beaches on isle. POOL is beautiful..but u won't get any laps as pool is very small...25 ft x 10 ft. Pool is for relaxation; Heidi..the property manager is sweet..lives right up the road; villa is not big, not small, free wifi, decently stocked, stovetop and microwave (no regular oven), gated community, very safe (we left doors open 24/7 practically); CONS; no AC in the main living area/kitchen area. We eventually got used to no AC in the main living area; but was not prepared for it at first. We arrived to the villa at around high noon (95 degrees and minimal breeze) with my elderly mom and 3 year old my son hot and sweating profusely, so; i promptly turned on AC in bedroom; Heidi's first sentence when she came a few minutes later was "Hello." Her 2nd sentence was "why is A/C on! we don't use AC around here and we charge extra for it" I found that ridiculous and insensitive at that moment. If u're not a native, it will be an adjustment not having AC throughout entire villa. BUT WE GOT USED TO IT, plus we were barely in the villa during the warmest hours of the day from then on. If u plan on spending time the villa during the peak hot hours, just know that there will be no AC in the living room area, only bedrooms; another CON, NO TVS in the bedrooms, the entire villa has one TV, and it is located in the living room area where there is no A/C; I don't want to overstate my issue with the A/C...after sunset, the entire villa is perfect...nice breezes and no need for A/C unless you are dependent on A/C environments; Another POSSIBLE CON..the location was OK for us as a family b/c we did not need to be in town a lot. There are great beaches w/i 15-30 min from Coral Estates, but the main part of town (McDonalds, main grocery store, clubs, downtown area where people walk around) are all located 25-30 minutes away via car. 5 min drive just to get to exit Coral Estates; 10-15 min drive to get to the main road. Again, not an issue for us since we were not looking to party every night. Another CON; Heidi reads the meter upon arrival..you will be charged extra for any overage beyond some unknown point. We spent the whole time depriving ourselves of water/AC/lights etc. for fear that we'd get a huge bill at the end; LAST CON. you get a grand total of 8 large towels/8 face towels total..for beach and villa use. OVERALL NICE, good villa for minimal to moderate use
Owner's Response: Dear Guest:
Thank you again for staying at our Dolphin House and enjoying the beauty, relaxation and wonders of Curacao.
In regard to some of your comments and/or descriptions in your review, we would like to provide some clarification:
The homes in Coral Estates are specifically built to take advantage of the constantly blowing winds. You will find them to have the ability to open their front and back areas to take advantage of these fresh breezes providing comfortable conditions during the day and cooling temperatures at night. Even the largest homes only air condition interior rooms.
Our pool is one of the largest in the neighborhood and is one of the few with a nice infinity design. Most homes only have wading or lounging pools.
Regarding" TVs in the bedrooms: We intend to keep our Villa as an "island getaway", not a hotel. We recently upgraded the Entertainment center to a Large Flat Screen TV and new Blue Ray DVD player that should enhance all of our guest viewing pleasure in our comfortable living room area. With the "free" WiFi that is provided, we believe some guests will begin to take advantage of their iPads or other portable devices to view movies or programs if they prefer lounging in the bedrooms.
The location of Coral Estates is, like you explained, about 10 minutes from the main road via a colorful drive that gives the visitor a view of how Curacao looked with its Plantation Landhouses, Flamingo ponds and ancient architecture of a founding Catholic church. Coral Estates is on the Leeward side of the island so that it may take advantages of calmer seas and nice beach locations only a short distance away (I.e. Porta St. Marie….about 5-10 minutes from the Villa).
In regard to your greeting by Heidi and the electrical usage explanation, we will provide the appropriate coaching necessary here. In the several years we have allowed guests to enjoy our Villa we have never seen the need to charge any additional electrical or water costs, there is a more than normal allotment.
Again, many thanks for utilizing our Villa and we hope your overall stay and engagements in Curacao were enjoyable and memorable.
