Árhvammur, is situated near the renowned swimming pool , Laugaskarð in Hveragerði, a small geothermal town, only 45km away from Reykjavík.
The house is 200 m2 (2153 sqft) with an open family/ kitchen area. It features 4 spacious rooms (sleeps 10 easily) and 3 bathrooms.
The spacious deck is wonderful for outdoor enjoyment, as well as the property itself, which is 11400 m2 (123,000 sqft) or (2.82 acres).
Located 45 km from Reykjavik, Hveragerði may be seen from the vantage point of the Kambar mountain slope, as it spreads out across a 5,000 year-old lava field. Throughout the year, pillars of steam may be seen rising up out of the town – and in summer the town is truly a green community, abounding in trees. A green revolution is taking place as areas of woodland in and around Hveragerði expand, with the locals working together in order to further develop their blossoming town. I am hesitant to tell everyone how beautiful Iceland is for fear of it getting over run by tourists, but this place is nothing short of breathtaking. First, Kristin is the consummate hostess. She will provide everything you need for an enjoyable stay. The house is outfitted very nicely and the first thing you should do upon arrival is open ALL the blinds for the view! A beautiful river in front (we counted the trout feeding on the surface every night over a glass of wine) and a mountain out the back. One of the best hiking trails in the area *literally* starts outside your door. In 10 minutes you are standing in front of ruins from the 12th century. In 15 minutes you are standing over the hot springs and geothermal features that make the area so popular as a weekend destination for the people of Reykjavik. You can easily walk through the town from the home and if you want to swim in one of the largest pools in Iceland, it is a 5 minute walk from the house. It is 1 hour to Gulfvoss, 50 minutes to Thingvellir, 75 minutes to the black beach at Vik, an hour from the glacier Myrdalsjokull and 45-55 minutes from the most beautiful waterfalls this side of Costa Rica. One of our favorite "creature comforts" was the heated floors. There is something about getting out of bed in the morning to toasty toes!
We will be back!
Some of this will sound redundant, based on the other reviews, but it bears repeating; this house is fabulous! My family of eight adults stayed for a week, and couldn't have asked for more. The house is spacious, clean, well-maintained and well-equipped with supplies. The setting is so beautiful, with lots of windows looking out onto such lovely landscape. The town is in such a convenient location, with all the amenities, easy to get to and close to Reykjavik and other fantastic sights. The owner, Kristin, was so incredibly kind and helpful with information to help us with our trip. I really feel that words cannot do justice to this property; we didn't want to leave, and I've only been home for a couple days, and miss it already! I highly, highly recommend this property for anyone wanting to visit Iceland!! Thank you, Kristin, for everything!
This house is all that its very friendly and helpful owner, Kristín, promises—and more! We (four adults and four kids) stayed there for a week in late October, and we couldn’t have had a better time. The house is a lot more spacious than it looks from the outside; the through-the-floor heating keeps it nice and warm; the many large windows are well insulated; the kitchen and bathrooms are state-of-the-art; and enough extra mattresses, comforters, pillows, and sheets are available to adjust sleeping arrangements as needed. There are plenty of guidebooks and other books, magazines, games, and toys to keep everyone happy during a long fall (or winter) evening, and the terrace, which wraps around the house, is ideal for the summer. Kristín gave us helpful travel tips and spot-on driving directions prior to our arrival, and as soon as we got there, she offered even more advice. The house is beautifully and very conveniently located. An Olympic-size geothermal pool is just down the road, and the major sights of southwestern Iceland (Þingvellir and Lake Þingvallavatn, Laugarvatn, Geysir, Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, the Mýrdalsjökull and Sólheimajökull glaciers, the black beach of Vík í Mýrdal) are all just a couple of hours’ drive away. You can be in downtown Reykjavík in forty-five minutes. Hveragerði itself is quite lovely and has everything we needed—a Bónus supermarket, a bakery, a gas station, a Vínbúð. A larger supermarket is one town over, in Selfoss. We couldn’t recommend this vacation rental more!
This was the perfect place to stay for our first trip to Iceland. The house is light, warm, clean, well equipped and comfortable with plenty of space. It's in a perfect and peaceful location too. An easy drive from Keflavik, lovely views and ideal for day trips to the sights of South Iceland - Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, Gulfoss, Geysir, Pingvellir, Eyjafjallajokull and plenty more. Just a few minutes drive away and a spectacular 3km walk into the mountains is a hot spring area. We visited on our first day - absolutely amazing.
Our trip to Iceland was amazing and renting this home played a big role in the success of our family vacation. It is perfect in many ways. First - The Location. Right on route 1 it was an easy drive to everywhere we wanted to go. From Brogarnes in the West to Jokulsarlon in the Southeast and everywhere in between (Gullfoss, Skogar, Reynisfjara, Thingvellir). We visited all these places during out stay and were back each evening for dinner! Reykjavik is only 45 minutes away! Second - The Amenities. The house had EVERYTHING we needed from a well stocked kitchen to personal needs like soap and shampoo. I have rented homes before and have always had to run out to get soap or laundry detergent etc, But not this time. It was a joy! Third - The Owner. Kristin was amazing. She made the transaction easy and was easy to reach for any questions we had. She was friendly and provided a lot of information about the area. Last, but certainly not least - The home itself. I'm not sure I can do it justice in this short review. It was very comfortable and almost immediately felt like home to us. We enjoyed family breakfasts at the kitchen counter and evening meals at the large dining table. There were perfect nooks to quietly sit and read a book and a terrific media room to watch TV when we wanted. The bedrooms were large and the beds were comfortable. And with 3 bathrooms everyone could get ready in the mornings without having to wait! The outside has an expansive deck with lots of outdoor furniture. There are beautiful views of the river and we enjoyed walking the paths. The house sits at the end of a private road so it feels remote although town is right across the river. I would not hesitate for a moment in recommending this house. If you are going to Iceland ( and I strongly advise that you should) this is the perfect place to make your "home base".
