Thalassa is an intimate, rustic vacation villa on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From its vantage point atop the lush Hawk Hill on the south shore, Thalassa offers panoramic views and a constant, refreshing Caribbean breeze even on the warmest days. The unforgettable, unobstructed vistas from every room and each of Thalassa's four decks in the villa capture the essence of vacationing in the Virgin Islands, with sunrises to the east beyond Ram Head and sunsets to the west toward the island of St. Thomas. Thalassa's comfortable simplicity, sustainable design and minimal carbon footprint includes a large main room, fully featured kitchen, two bedrooms, bathrooms and discrete outdoor showers. It accommodates up to four adults and/or children. The villa's tastefully manicured garden provides a virtual snapshot of the island's indigenous biodiversity, with perennial bougainvilleas and a host of other native plants.
Experience vacation in your own style: Located just 1.5 miles (10 minutes) from the island's main town of Cruz Bay, Thalassa offers easy access to a range of restaurants, shops and night life, and frequent ferry connections to St. Thomas and the airport. Or if you prefer peace and quiet, relax to your heart's desire in more than 7,000 acres of national park lands, numerous public beaches or Thalassa's own picturesque serenity. Hello and welcome to our guestbook for Thalassa on St. John!

We are in the process of adding paper-based comments from previous guests, and hope to make those available shortly.
We also encourage all guests to leave feedback. Thanks for stopping by!
Just as advertised. Great views. Not fancy but perfectly comfortable and adequate for our needs. Will go back again.
Thalassa has amazing views and great privacy. Very close to Cruz Bay, so convenient to get to grocery stores and restaurants.
This place is not fancy, so if you are looking for granite countertops and marble baths, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a nice quiet place to yourself, with amazing views, then you should consider it. The website represents the property well, and the on-island caretaker was great about meeting us when we arrived and took care of a minor issue we had as soon as we called. Other than when we called, he gave us our privacy.
Our favorite parts:
- Amazing views on all sides. Sunrise in the morning, sunset at night. Gorgeous.
- Decks on three sides - Always a good deck to go to, whether you want sun, shade, breeze, no breeze, etc.
- An unexpected plus - we were able to hear the waves in the bay below on the east side. Not sure if this is a time of year thing (we were there in Dec during a full moon), or if this is always, but it was a nice plus.
- Privacy - Although you can see the roofs/etc of other villas below you, you are on top of the hill, so someone would have to work pretty hard to see your villa.
- Clean - I was worried because no one talked about the cleanliness of the place. I can tell you that we didn't have any complaints about the cleanliness.
- Convenient - Easy to get to grocery store and get around the island.
- Bedrooms separate from living area - My husband really liked having the bedrooms set off from the main building.
- Guidebooks in the villa - We were able to find an "off the beaten path" beach on our last day to go snorkeling that was COMPLETELY EMPTY on New Years Day!! Great end to our trip that was only possible because of the book in the villa.
Things we didn't enjoy:
- Outdoor showers - There are two showers - both outdoor. Unfortunately, they are both on sides that get a breeze. We shower at the end of our days when we're on vacation, and it was very difficult to have a warm shower - maybe this would be different if you shower in the peak of the day.
- No outdoor grill or dining table - These weren't advertised, so it's nothing that was "wrong", but we generally like grilling when on vacation and like to eat outdoors. Would have made it much nicer if they had either.
- Cookware could use an upgrade - Not a dealbreaker, but we had to be creative on a lot of our cooking.
All in all - Not fancy, but clean, great views, and private.
What a majestic place! Our only regret about our stay at Thalassa is the amount of time it took us to write this review. The house sits amongst the tallest hills on the island of St. John (Hawk Hill), and from the moment we arrived we could not get enough of the views. Beautiful blue waters, island breezes and serenity at its finest.
My wife and I wanted to get away and relax, and quite frankly we could not have picked a better place to go. We intend on making Thalassa a recurrent trip for us. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous, and are all just a short drive from the house. The outdoor showers are a very nice touch, you can watch the sunrise while taking a shower each and every morning. We found ourselves going to bed earler than expected each night, waking up refereshed and surrounded by paradise.
Tim, the gentleman that helps with the hosue is extremely warm and helpful. He was a great tour guide and helper. We can't wait to come back to Thalassa!
Our stay at Thalassa was a dream! Tim met us at the ferry terminal and quickly guided us through the rental process and then led us on the short, 5 minute drive to our personal tree house. That is what it was affectionately called by us after we explored the 360 decks and views afforded by being on top of this hill with NO obstructions. The lack of central air is quickly overshadowed by the southerly breezes that whisk off the ocean all day. It literally felt like a big luxurious tree house with amazing views that was built just for us.
Normally a late sleeper, I found myself going to bed at 9 or 10pm and waking with the sun in the east bedroom. Of our 7 mornings, I only missed one sunrise (which I regret missing!). We caught at least 4 beautiful sunsets from the house as well. I'll say it again: you CANNOT beat the views from this house! We were often rushing to get back to the house to get a glimpse of the sunset because it was way better from the house than anywhere else we could think of!
You'll need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get up to the house, but those are easy to obtain through the rental companies. There is a great grocery store within 2 minutes of the house that is a bit cheaper than the nicer market closer to Cruz Bay.
If we go back to St. John (I'm working on my wife now!), we will DEFINITELY stay at Thalassa!
We vacationed at Thalassa for a long weekend and were very happy with our stay. The welcome we received from Tim was wonderful. It was a nice touch to be met at the ferry, much less be taken to our rental car agency and to the grocery store before taking us to the house. He took the time to make sure we had everything we needed and was always accessible during the duration of our visit. The house was well maintained and we greatly appreciate the little things like beach chairs, towels and the cooler. As with all the other reviews, the views from this house are amazing. The showers are outside so we found we only had a small window during the late afternoon when it wasn't too windy or chilly to shower but this is probably only an issue in the winter/spring. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a nice relaxing vacation. It was very close to Cruz Bay and easy to get to the beaches.
Stayed around Christmas time, and loved the house. it is unique, with truly unrivaled views for both sunrises and sunsets. The setup is also great with bedrooms separate from the main house, and lots of covered terrace space for lazy afternoons. Outside showers are something to get used to, but in fact a fantastic idea. Nothing fancy, but everything one needs is there. Will definitely be back!
One note: I would suggest that one gets a 4x4 as the last few yards on unpaved road are pretty bumpy, and the road up to the house is a pretty steep incline.
