About KC Christopher

Mitch and I moved from Colorado to the beautiful Finger Lakes region to begin another phase of our life together and to be closer to my parents as they are getting older. I grew up in the Buffalo area and Mitch came from the east coast originally, so this was a 'coming back to our roots' move.

After several years of searching in three different states, when we found the Finger Lakes we knew this was the place we had always dreamed of. Our love of water sports, lush green forests and a desire for the peaceful country life made Trumansburg an ideal choice. We found a wonderful historic mansion which we renovated into the Halsey House, a luxury bed and breakfast and we never looked back.

Mitch and I are avid animal lovers, with six exotic parrots and our beloved rescue dog Tess. Renovating these splendid old houses has become our passion and Mitch is certainly developing his woodworking and cabinetmaking skills here.

Someday I hope to get back to my hobby of making quilts, if I could only find the time. When we have the opportunity for a vacation, you will most likely find us in the Caribbean scuba diving.

KC Christopher purchased this house in 2008

Why KC Christopher chose Ithaca

This area of upstate NY is known as the Finger Lakes region, and its micro climate gives us milder winters and much less humid summers than other parts of the state. It also makes for a wonderful place for growing grapes. We are surrounded by wineries and vineyards, sandwiched between the Cayuga Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

We have sparkling lakes, over a hundred waterfalls, parks, farmland, forests, quaint villages and small cities. Although we are within a half day's drive from many large cities, we are a world away from the bustle and crowds.

Clarke's Cottage is 15 minutes from Ithaca, where Cornell University and Ithaca College bring culture and a vibrant atmosphere. Restaurant choices abound here, including several who specialize in featuring the bounty of the region's local farms.

The charming city of Watkins Glen is also 15 minutes away, with a park along the shores of Seneca Lake, The Glen racetrack, and the not-to-be-missed Watkins Glen State Park. The stunning beauty of this area is apparent through all four seasons, and you can be as active or as relaxed as you choose.

Peaceful and comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Clarke's Cottage was the most comfortable and well cared for home we've ever rented. The home is nicely appointed with comfortable and stylish furnishings. Beds were comfortable as well as the pillows. The kitchen is well stocked for large gatherings. My son enjoyed the hot tub and my guests took walks in and around the property. Attention to details and cleanliness were superb. The owners communication was top notch. I highly recommend!

Great place to get away from city

  • 5 of 5

We must say that the place is very beautiful and serene. House itself is well maintained and has enough rooms for 10 people. We were 4 couples and 3 kids and had lot of space. We liked their collection of board games and TV system. Kitchen is well equipped and has cutlery as well. Overall inside of the house is excellent

Outside is such greenery and spacious which we missed living in the city. All of us loved the camp fire and star gazing. Hot tub is very good and some of the pics we took with back ground of barn look pretty. We would go there again without any hesitation and recommend to other friends and family as well.

Amazing Get Away for Family

  • 5 of 5

Our family homes are quite spread out from Colorado to South Carolina. This vacation was the first time we had all been on vacation together for nearly a decade. The finger lakes won as a family friendly retreat, and Clark's Cottage won as the best place to rent in the area. It was easy to get to, yet remote enough to feel like an escape.

With some children in tow, we could easily split up during the day to visit nearby lakes and museums or venture to distilleries and vineyards. While the location made it easy for us to split up and explore during the day, each night, we made huge meals in the gourmet kitchen and pulled seats up to the fire pit outside. It was the perfect way to relax and reconnect.

We will definitely return!

Beautiful and Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

What a great property for a large group of people! We were in town for a graduation at Ithaca College and found this place to be just what was needed to get away from the craziness of the weekend! We did go the the Farmers Market in Ithaca and also saw many waterfalls during the stay. Since the weather was rainy we did spend one day in Corning at the Corning Glass Museum which is worth the trip.

The house was beautifully furnished and had everything that was needed. One negative was not having good cell phone reception.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the review, thank you for taking the time to tell others about your stay in Clarke's Cottage and how it is a relaxing getaway from the crowds in town during commencement weekends. The home's location in the peaceful countryside can result in spotty cell phone reception, depending on your carrier. When my husband and I were working on the remodeling of the house, we discovered that the master bath's shower had the best reception - we nick-named it the telephone booth. We understand the need to stay connected and have provided a land line phone for your use while you are there so you can stay in touch with home and work, and there is WIFI throughout the house as well. Happy vacationing! KC Christopher

Great for Groups

  • 4 of 5

Overall-the house was a great experience and we plan on visiting again.

LOWs: Based on the photographs, I was concerned when the GARMIN said we had arrived. The exterior of the house is in need of landscaping and looks quite dull. The other low is the location. The nearest real grocery store is about 20 minutes away. It was a little difficult with only one full bath for the bedrooms, so we shared the master bathroom.

HIGHs: The interior of the property is wonderful. The downstairs has a great layout if you've got a big group. The size of the house is nice as well. One couple in our group had a newborn and we were able to be reasonably vocal downstairs without worrying about waking anyone on the second floor. There is a nice study on the first floor if you're looking to get away from the group. The house is furnished nicely, well stocked with towels and kitchen utensils, and the beds are very comfortable. Oddly enough, the desolate location is also a positive; although it's not close to a town or shopping, it's central to the lakes and wine tours.

Owner's Response: Thank you for leaving a review, we really appreciate when our customers take the time to share their experience with others. We would like to clarify a couple of things so that our future guests know what to expect from Clarke's Cottage and can plan accordingly, This house is on a country setting, as per our description, and it is ten minutes from Trumansburg. Many of our customers choose this property because of it's location in the peaceful countryside and yet it is just minutes from what the Finger Lakes has to offer. This charming village of Trumansburg has a grocery store, liquor store, restaurants, a chocolate shop, many other stores, bars, a bank, library and gas stations all within ten minutes or so from the house. Ithaca and Watkins Glen are fifteen minutes from the house. This house has two full bathrooms and one half-bathroom. The half-bath is located on the first floor, one full bathroom is in the hall on the second floor and the other full bathroom is en suite in the master bathroom. If you are looking for a property with more bathrooms per bedrooms, please feel free to check out or other vacation rentals in the Finger Lakes, Good Vibrations (five king bedrooms, three bathrooms) and Willow Creek (six bedrooms, five bathrooms). As for the grounds, Clarke's Cottage is set on almost seven acres, with rolling lawns, a large pond, mature trees and gardens planted around the house. This customer did not see the gardens because his visit was in March at the end (we hope) of the longest, coldest winter we have had in a long time. Each year we add to the plantings and trees on the property and 2014 will be no exception. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway from city life, a private beautiful setting among cornfields, woods and farms, a house that has been remodeled and furnished for your comfort and enjoyment, and a place to spend time with family and friends then this house may be for you. If you are looking for an urban property in the hustle of city life or more formal and stately surroundings, our charming farmhouse is not the place you are looking for. Have a wonderful stay in the Finger Lakes, where ever you choose and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us!

Fantastic spot for a reunion!

  • 5 of 5

My family just enjoyed a wonderful week here, along with two other couples friends of ours (6 adults and 5 kids total). This was the perfect spot for us to catch up with old friends; the property allowed our young children, ages infant to six years old, to run around together and ride bikes/scooters on the paved area, fly kites and play croquet in the grassy area, etc. while the grown ups relaxed in the comfy adirondack rocking chairs around the fire pit. The house is very comfortable and well appointed; we enjoyed cooking big meals in the kitchen and eating outside at the picnic table. The weather was beautifully mild all week, in the mid-70's, so we only swam in the pond once, but it was clear and inviting, and we surely would have jumped in more often if it were hotter out. The property is maybe not quite as remote as it looks in some of the photos (you can see a quiet road), but it is expansive and lovely, and never felt noisy at all. Ithaca itself is a gem - we really enjoyed the weekend farmers' market, the science center (awesome for the kids!), hikes at Buttermilk Falls and Taughannock Falls parks, Cornell's campus, and Purity ice cream (their ice cream "sammies" are amazing!). There is tons to do, so it's just a choice of whether to go out or stay home on the beautiful property. We all remarked that we easily could have stayed two weeks or longer... perhaps the best testament is that my two-year old son spent the entire 5 hour car ride home saying, "I don't want to go home!" Perhaps we will make this an annual tradition! We all really appreciated the care the owners take with the home, ensuring that we had a very comfortable stay. One addition that we would love to see would be a big hammock somewhere on the property! Maybe down near the pond? Thanks for a wonderfully relaxing, fun week!
