Rue de Buci
The perfect perch under the Parisian eaves.
The elegance of the Rue du Buci apartment provides a contemplative complement to the hustle and bustle of the thriving market street located just around the corner on the rue de Seine.
Perched on the window sill of your high-ceilinged salon, four floors above the street activity (with an elevator to get you there), one is close enough to follow the movements of those coming to and fro while still remaining elevated enough to assume the role of curious spectator watching the actors from the upper stalls.
Looking up from your window-side position, you note that the backdrop is magnificent as floral balconies and Parisian rooftops lead the eye to the intersection of the Rue de Buci with the Boulevard St. Germain to your right and its junction with the celebrated Rue de Seine to your left. Watch Parisians with long-nosed watering-cans water their geraniums during the summer months or decorate their window alcoves with white fairy lights and clove studded oranges as the winter draws in.
Retreating back into the comfort of your apartment, a soft calm eludes, for the salon is the perfect place to escape the activity for a rest and perhaps some afternoon tea.
Newly renovated and decorated throughout in tones of soft beige and cream, this fully furnished one bedroom, one bathroom flat has that much sought-after double exposition with the requisite cross ventilation during the warm months. Moving from one room to the next, visitors to Paris can experience both the life and continuity of a traditional Parisian village from their south facing salon to the peace of a western courtyard facing bedroom, complete with white-painted original wood beams in both rooms.
The building itself is mid 18th century in date and entered through a door on the rue de Bourbon le Chateau on its East side. Faced in finely cut limestone, the building boasts Louis XV style decorative stone carving and is a fine example of 18th century architecture adapted to an irregular, narrow medieval street design.
Named after Simon de Buci, the first president of the parliament of Paris which convened in 1341 and who subsequently lived in the Rue de Buci from 1352, the street retains the commercial aspect of its entrepreneurial namesake. A man of modest French origins, 'Simon' financed his career by purchasing the 'Porte Saint-Germain,' one of the original entrance gates to the city of Paris, and subsequently taxing all merchandise that entered there. However, the Rue de Buci has much deeper roots than 14th century commerce. As one of the most famous markets of the village surrounding the 12th century Abbey of St. Germaine des Pres, it is one of the few ancient Parisian 'marchés' that have retained and adapted their historical function to the present day.
Therefore, with so much history beneath you, so much life to see below you and so much atmosphere to absorb around you, our apartment on the rue de Buci is quite simply the perfect nest for two* under the Parisian eaves.
*The owners have recently purchased a ‘top of the line’ queen size bed couch that sleeps 2 comfortably, so this flat can now sleep 4 despite being only 30 square meters in size.
I apologize for not e-mailing you sooner. I want to tell you I am loving the apartment and the location. It's just enough space. The area is colorful and buoyant, but the apartment is actually quiet. It's an oasis for me.
I certainly plan to rent this apartment again.
So, thank you,
Having just returned, I just wanted to let you know we had a marvelous time in Paris and absolutely loved the "Buci" apartment. Please pass onto the owner what a great great job they've done of renovating the apartment. It had everything we needed and was delightfully sunny in the living-room in the morning. We were lucky to experience a few days of lovely warm sunny days and balmy nights. Michel who met us at the apartment was great. We plan to stay again.
