|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
Welcome to Sandpiper cottage, a beautiful getaway only blocks from the beach. This cozy cottage sleeps up to 8 (6 adults) in 2 bedrooms and a sleeping alcove, with 1 ½ baths. You are sure to feel at home in this delightful blend of seashore art and knotty pine, (like a Tahoe cabin at the Beach) with skylights in the kitchen, a porthole window in the living room and a rowing oar railing on the stairs.
The cottage is in a quiet neighborhood filled with oaks and redwoods, a short, flat, 3-4 minute walk to Rio Del Mar Beach. After walking back from the beach, rinse off at the outdoor shower, then soak in the hot tub, underneath a giant oak tree, with the sweet smell of jasmine planted nearby. Then head to the front deck with new padded chairs, patio table, 9 foot umbrella, fountain, and gas barbecue to enjoy a comfortable, relaxed outdoor experience. There is 1-carport space off the alley in the back of the cottage and more space available on the street - no permits required. The bedroom upstairs has 1-Queen bed and a TV. The 2nd bedroom is downstairs with 1-Queen bed. The Full bath is next to this bedroom. There is also a 1/2 bath at this home. The sleeping alcove has two twin bunk beds for children to sleep. There is also a pull out queen sofa bed in the livingroom. No more than 6 adults are allowed to rent the cottage per new county guidelines
New windows were put in 9/2010, and a new flat screen TV was added to the living room in 2012. The rental includes beach towels, beach chairs, beach mats, a small beach cooler, 2 boogie boards, and sand toys. Have fun cooking in this fully equipped kitchen (microwave, dishwasher, blender, coffee maker, toaster, gas stove) with a table that seats 6 (with 8 chairs available).
There is also a large washer and dryer at the home. Enjoy the cozy Living Room with a wood burning stove, seating for 7 on 2 couches and a recliner, satellite flat screen TV, DVD player, stereo, iHome, and free wireless DSL internet service.
Take the short, flat stroll to Rio Del Mar beach, where you will find a coffee shop, a restored tavern, the Pixie Deli (with outdoor seating & BBQ), Cafe Rio (upscale restaurant), a fishing pier, cement ship (The Palo Alto), and Seacliff State Park Museum. Golf is nearby, as well as Nicene Marks State park, wineries, more restaurants, and a small theater.

I have lived in Rio Del Mar for 15 years and I love it! Nowhere else can you find such beautiful scenery, all within short driving distance. There is the ocean, mountains, and stunning cliffs right next to each other.
Colleen Gilmartin purchased this cottage in 2009
Rio Del Mar beach is one of the best beaches in Santa Cruz County. There is 1.5 mile beach path where you can walk or ride your bike. The beach goes on for miles to the south. I love all the oak trees on the street where the cottage is located.
I fell in love with the cottage the first time I saw it. It reminds me of a tree house the way the Oaks surround it. I love the large deck in front that gets sun most of the day, and the hot tub in back. I love all the wood inside that makes you feel cozy and warm.
We are return customers. We love this quiet and comfortable little spot. Nicely-maintained and only a short stroll to the beach.
I felt like the house wasn't what we were expecting. Walking in the door - hit by a very musty smell. Not a good first impression. My husband said I would get used to it, but I didn't. Had to spray stuff and burn candles. Frig was dirty, outside everything was filthy. Couldn't use the table and chairs, sopping wet and covered with dirt and debris. Candle holders filled with water. Umbrella had junks of mold on it. Kitchen and bath had ant problem. No bath upstairs so you had to walk down steep stairs in dark to use restroom at night. The Hottub!! Yeah, faces the alley. Nothing like sitting in a hottub with cars roaring down the alley with their headlights shining. No view except of the carport and alley. The jets only worked on one side. One night we came home looking forward to relaxing in the tub and it was so chilly we had to get out. It did warm up by the next night. I think that tub needs work. The entire outside areas were very dirty. Owner asks you to strip the beds, throw in a load of towels etc but charges cleaning fee. Nothing to look at outside except houses. Spent entire first day wanting to cry I was so disappointed. I guess it beat a hotel but that's about all I can say. Not much as far as restaurants in Aptos. I can say neighborhood was very quiet and it was short distance to beach. The beach was always very crowded in this area.
Location is easy walk to the beach. Feels like you are at home. Comfy outdoor areas for bbq or just sitting to read.
My husband and I and our two young children (3 y.o. & 9 mos.) met up with my brother-in-laws for a 4 night stay at the Sandpiper Cottage. The set up of the home was perfect for my family providing us the space downstairs while also providing privacy and quiet for upstairs guests. The walk to the beach was more than manageable and having an outside shower to rinse off before entering the home kept things neat! The rental was so much like our home (wi-fi, cable, grill, washer & dryer, etc...) that I've been raving about our vacation rental since we returned home!
Colleen was very responsive to any and all questions that I had prior to our trip! I would highly recommend this rental unit for a guest size such as ours - 4 adults, 2 children! Thank you again, Colleen, for providing a rental that attributed to such wonderful family memories!
Quaint place, everything you could ask for, short walk to the beach. Us and the three boys loved it!
We were a family of 4 adults and 4 children. This house was a little small for us, but it worked out just fine. The house was as we expected from the photo's. I did not remember that you needed to walk through the downstairs bedroom to get to the second bathroom and the bunk sleeping area, but it worked out for our family. I loved that the beach was so close and a nice flat walk. We also enjoyed having a fire on the beach in one of the fire pits at Rio Del Mar Beach. The owner was very nice and helpful. I would recommend this property to others.
3-4 minute walk to beautiful Rio Del Mar Beach. 1 mile from Nicene Marks State Park for hiking or bicycle tours. 10 miles from Santa Cruz Boardwalk and 30 miles from Monterey Aquarium.
