charming cottage situated on a knoll, surrounded by acres of tranquil farmland, with woods and stream. East and west facing porches overlook uninterrupted pastoral views. The cottage has been recently renovated, whilst retaining its original character with wood floors throughout. Downstairs includes living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom with queen size bed. Upstairs there are two delightful bedrooms under the eaves. One room has twin beds, the other a double.
This is an ideal situation where parents can relax and children are safe to explore.

Owners Brian & Theresa Palmer designers from the UK. We moved to the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains 10 years ago. Knoll cottage is situated across the field from our home and studio. We enjoy walking the hundred acres of pasture and woodland, and our guests are welcome to do the same. We often bike the New River Trail and are happy to let the guests have the use of four bicycles as well as canoe and kayak. We are keen gardeners and raise our own organic vegetables. Weekends are spent mainly outside enjoying the peace and beauty of the surrounding area.
Theresa Palmer purchased this cottage in 2006
The feedback from our visitors since we started renting the cottage has been most rewarding. It is our pleasure to see guests relaxing and enjoying this peaceful part of the world.
We had a wonderful stay. So glad that we found you. The cottage is absolutely charming. Your special touches top it off. Thank you for everything.
If you come to stay here, you need not make grand plans—you'll be perfectly happy to laze around the house the whole time, enjoying the views and the quiet. The cottage is well-appointed and lovely (even better with the flowers, fresh eggs, and cake!), but what we enjoyed most were its outdoor spaces: the two porches—both of which have comfortable seating—and the hammock and table/chairs under the maple, where we bird-watched, read books, and took many of our meals. We also took ample strolls through the fields and woods and down the farm roads (I recommend tick spray if you plan to do the same).
While there, the Palmers kindly loaned us a bike, and we covered about half of the New River Trail and managed to spot both Baltimore and orchard orioles, in addition to abundant flora (wild phlox, fire pink, fifty kinds of ferns, and more). We also made the best of the easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we took a nice hike.
In case you plan on renting the cottage for a bigger group, be aware that the two upstairs bedrooms are separated by a wall with an open doorway, but no door, which I didn't realize from the photos/description. It didn't bother us, since there were just two of us. And as of May 2015, there was a dearth of bowls in the kitchen, though it was thoroughly equipped otherwise, and we cooked most of our meals there.
We would heartily recommend the cottage and hope to make many happy returns!
Every single time I have stayed at this cottage, I have had the most relaxing weekend of my life. This place is perfect. Theresa and Brian bring so much energy and love to this property. I recommend this for groups, families, and couples. PERFECTION!
What a lovely dreamy place. The Palmers made me feel at home right from the start of my arrival asking me to join them for dinner with vegetables from their garden. They allowed me to stay in the studio apt the first night until cottage was available the next day. Everything was just as described on the VRBO website and more. Words cannot describe the views and tranquility of my stay. The cottage was decorated with so much charm, very clean down to the pressed linens, fresh cut flower placed around the house.Theresa made arrangements for horse back riding (thanks again Gary) near by and walks along their property. I really enjoyed my early mornings waking up to the cows, deer and turkeys, I never saw the bears I had heard about. What gorgeous sunsets every evening and stars. Plenty to do close by New River State Park, Floyd, Chateau Morrisette, Grandfather Mtn and Boone and of course Blue Ridge Parkway. Theresa and Brian were very gracious to say the least and enjoyed many nice conversations with them. This was the best place for me to de-stress for a week. I will definitely return again. Thanks again to the Palmers and enjoy your winter!!
We have been coming to Dugspur for many years due to family and friends in the area. My husband and I are both from the city so we like to go to the "country" for a week of peace and quiet. We chose this cottage this year instead of camping due to convenience to family and cost. We were extremely surprised with the house and the owners. The cottage was very adorable and gave us that "country feel" and the owners were very warm and inviting. They constantly checked to see if we needed anything and they even let our oldest child help in the garden, which for him was just a great experience.
I have had an opportunity to stay in a number of VRBO properties and while not as exotic as some, the care and concern or the Palmers was remarkable.
We arrived to fresh cut flowers throughout the cabin as well as a few vegetables from their nearby garden. Everything you could imagine was there from all the cookware and utensils needed to a large library of DVDs, books and games.
We never touched the TV or games...the carpet of wildflowers and the view of the dairy cattle grazing on the hillsides were enough.
There were 5 of us and the hot-water never ran out. No heavy traffic sounds...in fact besides birds and the occasional moo from the cows off in the distance was all I heard all weekend.
The descriptions and photos are accurate although there really is no way to fully capture the "feel" and warmth of the home.
We'd love to return. Thank you for all the little extras generally overlooked by most property owners.
The hosts were wonderful and accommodating. We arrived
To fresh baked bread and were given fresh lettuce and peas from the garden. The cottage is so cute, very quaintly decorated. The cows are so neat outside the cottage. They came down in the mornings and grazed right next to the porch. Highly recommended!
