This peaceful apartment is on the ground floor with the entrance off the garden. Alameda was developed in the late 1800's as a beach resort community. Today this 3 by 5 mile island is known for its tree lined streets and large collection of Victorian and Craftsman architecture not to mention the cute California bungalows.
Coming on to the island is like stepping back in time where people walk either the interesting neighborhoods or the beach. There are many owner run business from restaurants, nurseries, old fashion hardware stores, ice cream parlor, coffee shops, bike shops and a lovely restored Art Deco movie theatre. On the spirited end of the island you'll find award winning Rock Wall Winery, St. George Spirits (Hangar One Vodka) and Fraction Brewery , all facing the SF skyline. Oh, there are two 18 hole golf courses and a 9 hole par3 course at one end of the island. did I say we're only about a 15 min drive to the Oakland Airport?
This oasis is just a ferry ride from San Francisco. Or you could drive across one of the bridges to Oakland and catch the Bay Area Rapid Transit. Oakland (5 miles away) is home to Major league baseball, football, and basketball. An hours drive will take you to the wine country of Napa/Sonoma or to the coast at Half Moon Bay. A 15-30 min drive will take you to one of the Easy Bay Regional Parks with over 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Of Course there is the interesting town of Berkeley just about a 15-20 min drive north.
This was my second stay here. The apartment is roomy and well-equipped. It is set back from the street with a small attractive garden area. The owner is available for any needs that may arise. A real convenience is the washer ($2) and dryer ($1); bring your own detergent and quarters. Close by is a grocery store and two excellent breakfast/lunch cafes. On the down side, the apartment has a bit of a musty smell and dated; TV is small; parking can be a problem, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays when there is alternate-side of the street parking. Off-street parking can be available with owner's O.K. Park Street, the major thoroughfare in east Alameda, is a 15-minute walk.
Our son, wife and grandson moved to Alameda a few months ago and have not found a house yet, so we rented this lovely apartment to stay in while we were visiting and were very pleased as it was very clean and very well furnished. The location is perfect for walking to everything from shopping, grocery stores, restaurants and even to the beach. If they don't have a house by our next visit - we would definitely rent here again.
We loved the location - close to lots of shopping, restaurants, bars, beach, etc. From Alameda (full of 19th century architecture), it is a fun, easy 25-minute ferry ride to SF, avoiding traffic and expensive parking. It was FABULOUS to have parking at the unit. Fly into Oakland - it is a quick ride to the island. The unit is very comfortable & supplied with shampoo, soap, dishes, hairdryer, silverware, etc. I do prefer a mattress with a bit more support (especially with two of us), but it was ok. I would suggest replacing the phone as I could not hear anyone (even after adjusting the volume), but I did have my cell with me, so it was ok.
We stayed here while visiting my daughter in San Lorenzo. The location was perfect. The furnishings look different than the picture; I think even nicer. The kitchen was well furnished, the bed was comfortable and the unit was very clean. It was convenient having the washer and drier available. As mentioned in other reviews, having a designated parking space is wonderful in Alameda. We took the ferry to San Francisco one day, a great way to get to Fisherman's wharf or downtown. We will stay here again when we are in the area.
My wife and I stayed here in November of 2012 visiting our daughter and son-in-law. We returned in July 2014 to meet our new granddaughter who was just two weeks old. This is a great place to stay on the island. Clean, comfortable, and a great location. Betty is great to work with and the Banana Nut bread is a treat. As long as my daughter lives in the area, we will likely be back at least once a year. Cheaper than a hotel, more room, and all the comforts of home. Easy walking distance to a lot of what the Island has to offer, and off-street parking if you drive (something that is at a great premium in Alameda!). Two notes: I would recommend bringing a few extra towels and face cloths with you if you plan to stay a while and don't want to do laundry several times a week. If you require handicapped access this property might not be the best choice as there are several steps into the apartment.
This was great. I would definitely stay here again.
In some places a "garden apartment" is in the basement, but in this case it is an apartment in a garden setting.
