Dan and I moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1993 after growing up in the thumb area of Michigan. My husband was stationed as the Navy Recruiter for Delta County, is now retired after 25 years and works for the State of Michigan. I (Lynn) own a full-service salon in Escanaba called The Ritz Salon & Massage Studio, work at WDBC/WYKX radio and we have two beautiful daughters. When we moved to the U.P. we fell and love with the area and have been here since April of 1993.
Lynn Fitzpatrick purchased this cabin in 2000
If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to relax, enjoy wildlife, just rejuvenate. We love to be able to share the beauty of this area with others.
Wow. Camp Flapjack was fantastic. Walking the bedrock in the sun. Wet shoe wading in Lake Michigan in the shallows towards the light house at the edges of the bedrock. The views. Relaxing in the spotless very nice very comfortable gorgeous cabin with everything needed for any situation. Enjoying the ships, night sky, day sky, moon, sun and nature; deer, sand cranes, flowers, fossils, ancient bed rock, fresh air, lake breeze, Lake Michigan and of course the ever present chipmunks. Hiking the local area mindful of private property. Dan was fantastic. We enjoyed our large camp fires immensely. We did not even dent the wood supply and we tried. The house is just really nice and feels like home sweet home with a panoramic view thanks to all the windows. Nice and private. Local light house, museum and nature area is really simple cool and only a short walk away, great for stepping out and doing a little walk daily. The shell piles on the bedrock are awesome. We used Camp Flapjack as base camp for touring the area. But it was so nice we hung out at Camp Flapjack a lot. Made Flapjacks on the awesome deck too!! BBQ'd daily on the deck with cocktails. Oh yes. We would go back. Thanks Dan!
Camp Flapjack was everything we expected and more.
The cabin was wonderful. It's well maintained, both inside and out. We were very comfortable.
The weather was perfect. The fall colors were spectacular. (We were told they were more vibrant this year than they had been in years.)
My husband and I spent many hours walking along the lake searching for fossils, following bird/animal tracks in the sand and marveling over the "shell" dunes. It was marvelous watching the sun come up over the lake, listening to the woods come to life. Although the deer were elusive, we were visited by hawks, Tundra swans, raccoons, chipmunks & a family of 5 bald eagles.
Before we left home, we had made a list of places we wanted to go & things we wanted to see. We ended up only doing a small fraction of what we'd planned, because we didn't want to leave Camp Flapjack. We could have easily used 2 weeks there.........one to go sightseeing and one to just kick back, relax & enjoy the surroundings.
Our recommendations? (Dan & Lynn, none of these are negative comments.)
Buy groceries before you get to the cabin. It's a drive to/from town. The remoteness, tho, is part of the charm.
Take waterproof boots. The area between the yard & the actual edge of the water stays wet, even when the tide is out.
Get up early in the morning to sit on the porch and watch the sun come up. You won't be disappointed.
I would definitely recommend Camp Flapjack to others...and have. We're looking forward to when we can go back.
What a relaxing vacation we had. The spot is super secluded. We really enjoyed wading and looking for fossils. The sunrises were gorgeous. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. It will be hard to find another vacation home that compares.
My husband and I just finished our week at Camp Flapjack. The cabin was a wonderful location to get away from the pressures of the world. It is extremely private with a wonderful view of the lake. The weather was perfect and a great escape from the summer heat of North Carolina. It is very clean and shows exactly like the pictures in this ad. No surprises at all.
Probably the only thing we found to be a challenge is the location of this rental property from the majority of the tourist attractions of the Upper Penisula. We spent a good part of every day riding in our car to get to and from the sites. If you don't mind driving two hours to reach an attraction, then this won't be a problem for you.
We would rent this property again and spend more time at the cabin to relax and less time traveling to the attractions. I would recommend this property to my friends and family.
If you are looking for privay and quiet, this is the place. Everything you need to cook with in a very convenient kitchen. Full size fridge to hold everything from bottled water to a weeks worth of groceries. Very clean, lots of sleeping room. If you have little ones that roll or move a lot in bed, bring along a portable bed rail. The bunkbeds are set away from the walls.
Bring extra clothes and/or towels or there is a great laundry mat in Manistique. We had a large group of 7 so we went through towels fast in a week with the little kids rock picking. :)
Beautiful wildflowers and hummingbirds along with the great campfire and just a gorgeous view. Some great fishing spots located down at the end of the road, as well as on Lake Michigan by the lighthouse.
We had 4 kids with us ages 3 to 13 and they all had so much fun. Wonderful rockhounding / fossil picking by the water.
Bring your kayaks or rent them in Manistique for $40 for 24 hours or by the week. Call the Manistique Chamber of Commerce for rates. About an hour driving distance to the Pictured Rocks in Munising, we did a day hike there as well.
Truly a wonderful summer get away. Thank you!
