Come experience the simple life in this rustic all wood home that rents from May through September on the shore of the beautiful Pamlico River. Having a Wedding in Washington or nearby Greenville? Family reunion? ECU graduation? Book yourself or your guests here. It's just a 6 minute drive from downtown 'Little Washington' and about 25 minutes from Greenville, N.C. It is approximately a two hour drive from the Raleigh airport (RDU).
Have fun on the huge front lawn throwing a frisbee, a football, or enjoying a game of badminton. You may want to relax on your own private pier and watch the sunsets every night. Hatteras Hammocks between trees await an outdoor nap on the lawn or you can swing in the hammock on the screened-in front porch while others play board games on the long picnic table nearby. This house is situated at the end of one of the unchanged neighborhoods in Washington. It is not only on the River but it is also surrounded by a canal where you can throw in a fishing line. You will need a fishing license! But you don't need a license to relax!! You won't find a place like this on the river. It's rustic and down home. I invite you to come and experience a moment in time where life is simpler and all you need to do is smile.
There are four bedrooms which include 1 King, 2 Twins, 1 Queen and 4 Full beds. Therefore, it can sleep from 8-10 people. Also there are two bathrooms, one with the original claw foot tub!
Pets are not allowed as some of my Guests are allergic.
If you need water toys during your stay, contact McCotter's Marina (252-975-2174) down the road where they've never met a stranger. Ask for Mark Henley and tell him you will be renting my River House. He has jet skis, kayaks, sailboats, motor boats, or a pontoon boat. Look them up online! Don't have a computer? Call me and I will help you contact McCotters Marina.
I am looking forward to assisting you in your vacation time, so give me a call and I will tell you all about the wonderful things awaiting you in 'Little Washington' where history was made and we like to preserve it!
Scroll down the page and see pictures and check out the new feature (Traveler Map & Insider Guide) that lists places to go (all picked out by me ... my favorites!). I get to write my own reviews and I have included my own pictures. So have fun exploring what you can do in Little Washington.

I spent my teen summers in Washington. I call this place my own personal paradise. There's simply no place like it. The sunsets and quiet nights are worth every moment. When I come to The River I come to a place that takes me back to a simpler time and it reminds me of what's important. I hope you like it as much as I do.
You can see where my house is located by the map below. The address is: 1 Shady Banks Beach Road, Washington, N.C., 27889.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 1968
When I walked through the front door I felt immediately relaxed. I liked the peaceful surroundings, visiting historic Bath, watching sunsets and picnicking on the pier. I also loved downtown Washington with it's delicious eateries and charm. There seems to be always some kind of entertainment going on. Best of all was sitting on the screened front porch at the house listening to the rain. Can't wait to go back!!
Love this house. It's definitely on the older side but has a lot of charm. Thank you!!!
We spent two nights at this cottage. It was rustic but very comfortable and charming. The house was perfect for four adults and five kids. We spent most of our time swimming off the pier, paddle boarding, and eating on the large screened porch. The two outdoor hammocks were also well used on our stay. There are two baths but only one shower which we were ok with but my husband thought am outdoor shower would have been nice. We will certainly go back!
We were recently at Shady Banks for a weekend with old friends, and felt the cares melt away as we pulled up and stepped back in time. What a cozy, relaxing time with plenty of room for all of us to enjoy the company and surroundings. This is our second trip to Shady Banks. We are four couples, the "girls" have been friends since the 1950s, and the hubbies, since the 1970s. We relaxed and soaked up the wonderful atmosphere, which was reminiscent of our childhood. We loved being able to plan and prepare our meals, eat together either inside or out, visit on the pier/dock, yawn, inside or the wonderful screened porch We enjoyed the spectacular view to the river from all the front windows, den, porch and bedrooms. The weather was great and comfortable with a wonderful breeze the first night, but when it was hotter the second day we were able to still enjoy the comforts of air-conditioning if we wished to be inside, or the breeze outside. On Friday night, we enjoyed listening to John Moore's Sock Hop on 107.9, and were amazed at the beautiful sunsets both evenings. God's creation was quite evident all around us. We are so glad that we were able to all be together and enjoy your wonderful, comfortable, and cozy cabin/home. I've gone back to the website a couple of times, just to view the great photos you have posted, and get that relaxing feeling again. The last time we were here the ladies ate at, On the Waterfront, I believe it was called. Food was really good, you can drive there in Washington on the riverfront, or take your boat and eat dockside. Last time and this time we enjoyed strolling and shopping in Washington, while the guys golfed. Thanks for allowing us to book your home and hope to do it again. It would be a neat place for other folks to come, even ones who aren't as old as we are :) We could have enjoyed it as young couples too. Loved how you had books, paintings, games, etc. inside and out, and all around the house. It made it very welcoming and homey. It would be awesome for a family with kids and/or grandkids too. Sounds like I'm getting ideas!
We stayed at the Shady Banks house this past weekend with 5 adults and 2 toddlers. We were in town for a family weddding and this worked out great for the small children. Hotel rooms would have been a disaster. Fabulous front porch, hammocks and front yard along with the pier. Having grown up in Washington, I was totally familiar with the area and the location of the house which is quite private. Very nice "old fashioned" river cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
What a delightful almost two week vacation we had in this river cottage! We used to live in Washington and this was the perfect spot for our family and extended family to stay and reconnect with old friends! The cottage is very clean and there is plenty of room for lots of guests. The setting is perfect for family fun....we enjoyed swimming, crabbing and kayaking in the river and the children also enjoyed playing outside in the huge grassy yard. We also loved catching the river breezes as we sat and relaxed on the screened in porch. The house is just a few minutes from downtown and there are so many fun places to go eat and shop and stroll the waterfront. Our stay was very comfortable and relaxing and good old-fashioned rustic river fun! The owner was very accommodating and a pleasure to talk to about renting. We will definitely stay there again!
Family members had a wonderful 5 days at the cottage while there for our son's wedding. Everthing was as promised except the house was more completely furnished than expected. The young people enjoyed swimming, crabbing and kayaking. There is already talk of a reunion at the cottage in the future.
