Snugly situated in the center of the island, this 960 sq ft garage apartment sleeps 6 to 8 comfortably. There is one full bathroom in the apartment and another outside and downstairs which is rustic but totally functional. The kitchen is outfitted with all the standard equipment including a dishwasher, the TV has satellite cable and the Internet is WiFi. Beds include 1 king size and 2 full size. The couch is a queen size sleeper. The island is known for many things including deep sea fishing, bird watching, white sand beaches, and a laid back attitude. Local attractions are The Estuarium, Golf Course, Audubon Bird Sanctuary, and historic Fort Gaines.

We were looking for a place to "chill" for a few days and this was perfect. Very quiet, clean and had everything we could possibly have needed. Fully equipped kitchen, movies galore, games, books and such comfortable beds, pillows and linens. Buddy took us on a quick tour of the island when we arrived and offered anything we could want from bicycles, beach chairs, umbrellas and home cooked food. If they invite you to eat with them definitely accept!! So inviting and sociable but respected our privacy too - Highly recommend!!

Where to Eat - Lighthouse Bakery - The BEST pastries I have ever had - be sure to go before 7:30 am or call in your order the day before to avoid long lines and scarce pastries...Sunset Grill - Crab Claws and Shrimp are must haves...Skinners - they steam any seafood you want for take out including corn on the cobb and red potatoes - delicious!! Barnacle Bills - huge portions of anything you order

Be sure to make time to eat at - The Lighthouse Bakery (go before 8am and pickup your pastries to beat the crowd) - Sunset Grill (get the crab claws and shrimp for sure) - Skinners - Seafood market (they will steam fresh seafood, corn on the cob and red potatoes for takeout) Barnacle Bills (huge portions of anything you order)

Like the other viewer said we were kindof skeptical when we saw it was a garage apt. But it totally exceeded any expectations we had. For the location and price it was a great deal..Beautiful place to stay, very clean. Owners were very nice. We loved it.

If you like hospitality this is the place to stay. ( It is all of what they say it will be. And more.) Buddy & Jane and there son are the best things since apple pie. If your are ask to come down for dinner run to the table. The food was so awsome. There is a tip jar that we put up. They will show you around if you want. If you like Buddy will take you on a boat ride jump on it.. Very clean and will maintained. But if you like to be by your self you have the place too.

If you like white sand beach you come to the right place. If you are like us you will not want to go home.

Spotless accommodations; generous hosts

Our week at Taratoo could not have been more pleasant or memorable. All three of the host family personified what makes southern hospitality legendary. They were so welcoming and friendly that we felt as though we were family.
The cottage was immaculate and well supplied with high quality furnishings and housewares, the bedrooms were comfortable and quiet, and the bookcases were filled with a wonderful assortment of books.

Dauphin Island has 15 miles of level, safe, bicycle paths. We chose two bicycles from an ample supply and pedaled over much of the island.

If the family invites you to join them at their outdoor kitchen/dining area under their house (which is on stilts), accept! They love to cook, eat, and socialize.
