Whippoorwill Manor Farm is a destination by itself. It is very rare that one can rent their own farm for a week or even for a weekend. Many people have the desire to own a second house in the country to enjoy a selcuded environment with familiy and friends, but a farm is both expensive to purchase and maintain. Whippoorwill Manor Farm provides an unique opportunity to rent the experience of having one's own farm. The 110 arces with its miles of trails along with exploring the many restored barns provide the opportunity to enjoy a real connection back to the land and history of our country. The Hop field next to the home adds an additional ambience to the grounds. The historic but completely modernized home provides a year round setting to enjoy. The original part of the house (log cabin) dates back to the 1700's and is the second oldest structure in Madison County. During the Civil War, the Farm was used as a camp by the Confederacy on several occasions during the campaigns of 1862 and 1863.
The house was completely restored in 2005 adding a new addition that houses a large modern kitchen, and 3 full baths (over 3,800 sq ft). The house has all the modern conveniences including wireless internet and direct TV so you can stay connected, but the house has maintained its unique historical charm to include its wide hickory planked floors, log cabin rooms with stone fireplaces, and hand crafted wood work throughout the home. One of Washington's top interior decorators designed the home specifically with the idea of group/family use. All new beds and furiture purchased in early 2010. The house even offers a 'pub' room that's great to enjoy a drink while playing darts or cards after a hard day of outdoor activities such as: climbing Old Rag Mtn (the most spectacular hike in VA) or hiking White Oak Canyon to see its impressive upper and lower waterfalls, both parking lots are approximately 7 miles from the house both located in Shenandoah National Park. Also just minutes from Graves Mountain Lodge and both Prince Michel, Sharp Rock and DuCard Vineyards.
For cycling enthusiasts from other parts of the country, the mountain scenery coupled with the quiet, safe, country roads are a national treasure to be experienced. The very popular Tour de Madison Bike Ride (held in mid May every year) , and the ride enjoys national statue. The Tour is not a race, but rather designed as a wonderful way to see the great scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains. They have routes for the entire family; you can choose between 16, 40, and 62 miles along country roads. If you can't make the actual weekend, the owner will provide you with the specific routes of the Tour so can enjoy during your stay. Your group could even do a different 'century' everyday for a week and beyond the initial few miles leaving/returning to the house, you will not have to cover the same ground twice! The owners even have several mountain and road bikes available for your use, both male and female bikes.
It is a wonderful place for family vacations and reunions as well as a quiet retreat for business strategy development and/or executive team building events. An ideal setting for cooking out or even hosting an outdoor/catered event and grounds surrounding the house to include the new Hop field with its vines growing on 12' trestles. Virginia was actually the Hop growing capital during the early colonial period of the country. The property is 15-20 minutes from the historic towns of Culpepper, Madison and Sperryville for shopping and quality restaurants. Additionally, it serves as a perfect home vacation site to explore the many historic landmarks of the Shenandoah Valley and its vast natural beauty.
Our objective is to treat our guests the same as we do with our extended family/friends who come and visit the farm. Therefore, our goal is to allow you to walk in and be comfortable as important basics are provided to get you started. The farm provides the following: Linens, towels, blankets, essential paper products, cleaning supplies, some laundry detergent, coffee, use of spices, condiments (no guaranteed stock), charcoal, lighter fluid and wood for fire place (some local cabins charge $40.00 just for the firewood). Finally, John, our caretaker, will stop by and welcome you personally and address any concerns or questions you may have.
Come enjoy this truly unique and beautiful property for a peaceful and fun vacation or come with a group of friends for a long weekend to hike, bike, and enjoy each other with a number of local attractions and activities. On the property, there are a number activities to enjoy such as volleyball and horseshoes along with a great skeet shooting area, a mechanical thrower is available that guests may use. In the evenings, the fire pit is a wonderful place to tell stories and share experiences year round. In the large field above the house fireworks are permitted as well. There are very few opportunities to rent a place with so much charm with its old barns and well groomed fields all in a private setting which makes it both ideal and easy to host a week or weekend getaway with family and/or friends. The farm has an outdoor sauna (dry) in the back yard and can be enjoyed year round. The house has a full back up generator in the event power is lost so your stay will not be disrupted if a major storm strikes.
The farm can be enjoyed year round. The owners in really like being at the farm during the winter months as the Mid Atlantic usually has fairly mid winters so during the day it's warm enough to be outside and hike without the bugs and thorn bushes scratching you and you come back at night and enjoy huddling around the fireplaces at night. During the winter months, the owners will provide a full refund if one of those rare snow storms hit the area and prevent safe travel.

John, our caretaker, will come by and welcome you to the farm and answer any questions you have or assist you settling in. John is a Master Stone mason and private investigator who assisted our late father in the renovation of the house and barns; therefore, John is deeply commited to making the farm the showcase of the valley. John is also an avid outdoorsman and knows every inch of the 110 arces better than anybody else. John's vision and foresight have been the key force in creating the farm's park like atomsphere that you will enjoy.
Our family has been enjoying this area since my grandparents purchased the adjacent farm in 1950. In 1980 our father purchased this property and began working his dream to create a 'park like atmosphere' for his family and friends to enjoy. All the barns and buildings were refurbished in the 1990's, and finally in 2004, he began the complete renovation of the farm house. A new wing was added for the baths and the kitchen as prior to this time the house had no running water.
Despite the dramatic growth of the Washington metro area and the expansion of the suburbs, this property remains as quiet and beautiful a place as it was 50 years ago and yet it is only on average 1.5 hours from Washington DC. We are avid hikers and cyclists and we believe there is no better venue for enjoying both in the entire mid-Atlantic region.
