A month this time!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for a week with my son (I'm mid-70s, he's 50ish) last year, and enjoyed it so much that I booked it for a month, with two friends, this year. Our plan was to get away from the Iowa winter for a bit, returning on the first day of spring.

We each claimed a "room": the person who needed to sleep in the daytime got the bedroom, the one who likes to stay up and watch TV had the sofabed in the living room, and the third set up a cot in the kitchen, using the additional cot mattresses to make a thicker cushion. Everyone was comfortable, although the cot wouldn't be suitable for a taller or much heavier person. The apartment was spotlessly clean and had all needed appliances, linens, etc. There was an extra TV in the bedroom. Both the heating and air conditioning worked well. Abundant hot water.

On this lengthy stay, we took full advantage of the kitchen and laundry facilities, and enjoyed sitting on the patio (which certainly wasn't an option at home in the snow!). We traveled by train, and never felt that we needed a car. The neighborhood is great, with a convenience store, restaurants, and pubs within a short walk. If you are interested in architecture, it's fun just to wander about and look at the homes; if you're a jogger, the paved walk along the levee is perfect. The parks and levee have plenty of benches for more sedentary types to perch upon. Also close by is a glass blower's manufactory and shop; they offer an interesting instructional video, and you can see the crafters at work through glass windows at the rear of the store. I only had room for one item in my luggage, but they packed it so carefully that it arrived home unscathed. Should you be seeking a church, there are several nearby, both Catholic and Protestant. The tiny Mount Olivet Episcopal church building was constructed around 1850, entirely of cypress, and the small congregation is very friendly and welcoming. The larger churches looked beautiful.

Whenever we wanted, we took the ferry across the river, with access to all the tourist attractions one could desire. We used the streetcars, city bus, and taxis to get around, finding the transportation costs quite reasonable. (I suspect that it would have been more expensive to park a car than to use public transit.)

Dina is very responsive, and can be reached by email, text, or phone. I'd recommend the property to anyone, assuming they are fit enough to climb a few steepish steps. I'll be back!

STAY HERE!! You won't regret it.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the BoHo for our honeymoon. Dina was super easy to communicate with. The property, as well as Algiers Point, was more than we could've hoped for. We loved the neighborhood and walked around it more than once. I recommend popping into The Crown and Anchor Pub for a pint (the bartender and patrons are so friendly and helpful if you're looking for advice on where to go that's off the beaten path), as well as Toute De Suite for breakfast (great food made to order)-- both within walking distance from the house. And I LOVE the fact that the ferry is literally a stones throw away-- made commuting to the Quarter so easy and if we wanted to stay out late, it wasn't difficult (or too expensive) to grab a taxi. (We drove, but barely used our vehicle.)

Now, back to the house-- I love all the details Dina has paid attention too. The little notes everywhere, the cab cards on the mantel, and (my favorite) the bedside journal for tenants of the house to leave their mark in. I also loved the photos on the walls. We were fortunate to enjoy relatively nice weather while there and I enjoyed (on more than one occasion) opening both doors for a lovely cross-breeze.

We didn't have the pleasure of meeting the neighbors, but they didn't seem bothered by us at all and occasionally we enjoyed listening to piano music from their part of the house (not sure if someone was playing or if it was a recording, but it was lovely)-- in saying that, the walls are thin-- especially in the bedroom by the linen closet, just an FYI.

My recommendations for your visit to NOLA:

-Go to Rouse's for groceries-- the market is cool, but it's limited most days and I feel is more of a touristy spot than a functional one when it comes to grocery shopping.

-BMC and the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen Street are good places to catch some great music (BMC is way larger and has space to dance, if that's your thing)

-El Gato Negro by the market is, hands down, the BEST Mexican food I have ever had.

-go to City Park

Theres so much I could say, but I just don't have the space to write it.

Enjoy your visit!!!

A great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful little house that was spotlessly clean! Furnished with everything you could imagine (washer/dryer/blow dryer/condiments/.etc. etc. etc.!) Small but as we spent most time out for 9 days, it was not a problem at all! Quiet neighborhood...several small restaurants/bars/store/bakery within easy walking distance. Only a block and a half from ferry.

And should you wish to stay longer in the french quarter at night, a cab ride was only 16 dollars. My Son rented a car so we could delve further afield. The owner made booking, access and everything else a breeze! We will certainly be back as will my grown children and I have enthusiastically recommended it to all my friends. Thanks so much Dina!!!

Clean Quiet Fun

  • 5 of 5

Clean, Quiet, Quaint. Great alternative to French Quarter options with an authentic NOLA feel. Easy access to Canal St and Quarter during ferry hours. Uptown, Garden District was a cinch to get to via car and the bridge is free. Taxi driver was happy to take us back one night though needed some help navigating the one ways in the neighborhood. Closest groceries might actually be French Quarter...that's what we did. Not 100% on that though. At least two local pubs frequented by few (if any) tourists. At least one great cafe down to the street serving espresso and breakfast. Water is hot, A/C is cold, parking is free and the owner is responsive and easy to work with.

A great place to stay in NOLA! - Very Highly Recommended.

  • 4 of 5

First, let me say that the only reason I would give it 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that we are a family of five, and it is a little tight for five people. Other than that, this is a wonderful place to stay in a charming neighborhood with easy access to all that NOLA has to offer. We loved taking the ferry across the river each day to the French Quarter or to explore other parts of NOLA, which is my new favorite city! Also, we had a car so the huge bonus is that there is plenty of free street parking in Algiers Point which meant that on those days when we didn't use the car (which was most days), we didn't have to pay to park it somewhere. The only downside to the ferry is that when we were there, it did not run after 6:00 p.m. so when our activities involved staying on the other side of the river after 6:00 p.m., we had to take a cab back to Algiers Point. Of course, the cab fare home was probably cheaper than the cost of parking a car for a full day in the French Quarter or some other crowded NOLA neighborhood. Finally, Dina, the owner was incredibly helpful and very responsive. I would highly recommend this property for a party of 4, and would still recommend it for a party of 5 or 6, but only if you know each other pretty well. Also, the camp cots work best for littler people. Finally, this is a great place for tourists who want to live locals and the coffee shop down the street from the house only adds to the charm of the neighborhood.

Already reserved for next year!

  • 5 of 5

We were absolutely delighted. Travelers were me (75, I got the bedroom) and my son (50, sleeping on the fold-out couch). We enjoyed the apartment, although we didn't really spend a lot of time there; the patio was lovely and I'm looking forward to sitting outside when I come back for a month next year. The kitchen and laundry room will also be welcome for that longer stay.

Everything was clean and as described. There are 3 steepish steps to get into the house, but I'd recommend it to anyone for whom that's not an issue. Children and pets are welcome. The owner, who lives in another state, was incredibly responsive, checking with us by text to ensure that we had arrived and that all was in good order.

Neighborhood is charming, the ferry convenient (no longer free, it's $2 per trip or $1 for seniors). We stayed 5 nights and had breakfast at Tout de Suite 5 times, dinner at Dry Dock twice, and at Vine & Dine once (Vine & Dine also sells wine and beer by the bottle; alas, we discovered this on our last night and didn't take advantage of the opportunity). Didn't get to the Crown & Anchor, a pub which is entered through a Tardis replica; maybe next year.

I guess there's no better recommendation than a return booking!
